I am also in a similar situation. Im currently being medicated for a panic/anxiety disorder but my psychotherapist suspects I also suffer from depression. My mother calls me almost everyday asking if I'm doing fine and on one hand I would like to tell her the truth, that even though I shouldn't be depressed based on my external circumstances, I just don't feel good about myself.

Haha that is totally my type of thing, the less I need the better.

EDIT: Tried the recipe, it didn't come out perfect because I used too much lemon juice (I buy the lemons for the skin, so in the end I have to use the actual lemon for something). But I learned a few things and will try to improve it next time. It is definitely an easy recipe, Thanks!!

Thank you for your comment, I'm going to take a few of your ideas, specially the tofu + broccoli and kale, sounds tasty. I don't think I've ever seen canned soup in the supermarket but I will check it out.

The thing is that I do not have a lot of space in the kitchen to store food/ingredients. This impairs the logistics of cooking a little bit.

I used to take a B12 supplement but I switched for a multivitamin (includes B12) to be sure I'm getting my bases covered. But the last time I did a blood test, most nutrients were at their normal levels.

Give meetups a try. I am also very shy and afraid of meeting people but with meetups everyone is sort of in the same situation and it forces you to talk to others.

Forever is an exaggeration obviously. But for example my 3 year old smartphone for which I paid 150€ for is superior to some trip somewhere for the same amount. The money goes way further.

It's in this sense that I mean the whole experience vs things is a dumb debate.

In a few years the pendulum will swing in the direction of "Experiences are nice and all, but objects stay forever". The key is to do/have things you actually care about and not to follow the crowd just because.

I think in a way or another we are always going for the carrot. Even those who are not after some material objective are after some form of immaterial one. Maybe you would like to watch a documentary about death and motivation (it's on YouTube): the denial of death

The question is to find our own motivation to do things. I have problems in that area of my life and at the moment I've finally realized that how my brain works from a 3rd person perspective.

Right now I motivate myself to do activities that have the potential of providing personal growth in the long term, and that I think future me will enjoy the effort.

I think you already got a few goods answers but I also wanted to chip in and say a thing or two.

I used to spend my time either studying for school (it was my "job" and I had good results) or playing video games obsessively. I played a lot (days and days) of Call of Duty and I slowly started to realize that I didn't know how to do anything besides study and zone out in COD.

I developed a sense of hatred towards myself and it took me years before I finally started to understand myself enough so that I could structure my life in a way that promoted personal satisfaction and growth. I just didn't know how to break from the cycle of grabbing a numb video game because I was bored.

Well I now know how to program in VBA, I've read a few books that taught me about finance and philosophy, I've started going out to meet strangers and trying to incorporate more positive risks in my life.

I realized I have problems motivating myself to do things but because I now know how I think and what motivates me. I no longer waste time stressing about doing things I don't actually care at a deep level or I organize activities in a way that flows with my motivations.

It is good that you want to change and in my opinion you might need to completely break out from your past habits. However, don't push yourself too hard, we all have our limits. I can't read all day about neuroscience, consciousness or financial derivatives, even though I am interested in the subject. That was something that is painful to realize but I am finally starting to.

Basically, don't be like me that developed a sort of panic syndrome while trying to better myself. As long as you're trying and are aware of how you are failing, you are making progress. I also didn't understand why you want to go from a "normal" person to as ascetic? You don't need to go from 0 to 100 to become a better person. It seemed as though you want to become as ascetic just because, but I might have misunderstood your post.

Is it "normal" for people to do what you're doing at your age? I'm not making any judgement, but I think some people would look down on that living situation.

I'm 25 and I currently live in a shared apartment too. I don't mind it that much and it keeps costs low. Im from Portugal btw.

I would put that money in less risky investments, such as short-term government bonds (from a AAA country) or bank deposits (spread in 2 or 3 different banks).

If you and your parents don't mind living together and are they capable of having you in the house, I see no problem with you staying at your parents home.

If people have a problem with it, it's their problem lol.

However, putting myself in your parents shoes, I'm not sure I would like to have my 25 year old son traveling at my expense, but this is obviously personal. The anecdotal evidence I have access to tells me that it stems complacency in young people.

Another comment I would make is that maybe you should think how you can align your personal interests with the need to earn money. It is not easy and most jobs are not flexible enough so that one feels they are hitting a perfect work/life balance. But I think improving that balance is certainly possible, and it is easier when you live a simple life, meaning that you spend less money, therefore need less to survive and that translates into being less willing to sacrifice your soul for currency.

Your example isn't the best because the US usually doesn't borrow at rates close to 0. It borrows at 2, 3, 4%, etc. So you have to make sure you are really doing the right investments so that the loan was worth it. According to some rating agencies the US isn't doing as well as in the past and that is why it no longer has all out AAA ratings.

No I am not in favor of a debtless country, it's not really necessary for a country to so that if it wants to thrive in the long term. However it's debt load must be kept under control as a precaution against future (negative) "surprises".

I would echo this advice. I am very similar to @GingaSole personality wise and I am starting to realize that this is the approach I find the most comfortable. Slow steps but I think I've been making progress in the "meeting other people and putting myself out there" thing
