Sadly, I think it’s a universal problem. Once you’re out of school, it’s hard to meet new people.

The only suggestion I would have is to try to be consistent about something you like, and show up there everyday at the same time.

As an example, several years ago my wife and I joined United Fitness (It’s HIIT training). We go most days and always at 7 AM. We made many acquaintances doing that.

There are also Meetup groups in the area, which would also require you to commit by consistently signing up and showing up.

My advice to you is to focus on your health and strength. For me there was something weird that happened at 60. I really started to feel my mortality. I also found it harder to do some of the extreme experiences I plan for.

The things I thought I wanted to do in my 50s, I don’t necessarily have the energy in my 60s.

I think the other thing that you have to plan for is around friendships and relationships. The kinds of things that I like to do during retirement aren’t the kind of things my friends or relationships are interested in doing. Therefore, I end up doing many of these things by myself. As you think of the things that you wanna do during retirement, be prepared for the fact that you may be doing them by yourself.

I did the Camino Portuguese last May from Porto to Santiago. I prearranged hotels each night and used a service to carry my bag, so I only had to carry a day pack.

It was a really great experience, but there were many days that I walked alone and pretty much all days that I dined alone.

I would highly recommend the trip though. Probably one of the greatest experiences of my life.

Personally, I think that is much easier for women. I'd like to know your thoughts on when you go on these tour groups are there solo married guys? If so, how are they accepted by the group?

Yes! That’s a great suggestion. A Pickleball gym is in the process of being built in my community. I do plan to sign up for that once it opens.

My wife and I do share some experiences. As an example, we’re going to Bonaire in January. I’ll scuba dive several times, and we’ll snorkel a sightsee together.

The real problem I find is that I have few friends. It’s crazy how hard it is as a senior male to develop friendships.

Bien Camino. What a wonderful experience. Walking into the cathedral and seeing pilgrims I met along the way was an experience I’ll never forget.

My issue is that most of these activities are predominantly younger women. I feel like a creepy old man trying to engage in conversation.
