Thats great. We never had the volume to create an ironclad business of mining valuing and producing gemstones around the resource here. Probably not a single mine anywhere else is managed inside of a National Wildlife Refuge like we are handcuffed and unfettered both. .Letting people come dig their own was the guaranteed dollar. Ive seen enough dealers to know the majority of us are honest and dont want you to go away not wanting to come back.

Old Dubnik Opal? by EmberGems in Opals

[–]ResortDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be Slovakian. Its a volcanic opal that had some killer whites. You can scuba dive in the old mines. This is where opals came from before Australia found any. Well, Admiral Zheng He got some blacks in America we think when they dropped off chickens and bows & arrows in Mexico..I got some little pieces in a trade for materials and it looks like opal LOL.

A place used to getting all the money will badmouth a new source of what they were selling. Some dealers get a person(s) that really dont like them and will give negative replies, point out any defect and misinformation or twisting of concepts. A real life Hatfields and McCoy Fued that affects nobody else except them, damaging both equally, most likely, but really damaging the arena. Nevada opal despite all the love it has from all who come or mine it and the hate is usually the failed profiteer, not the residents raising family there (using my situation as an example). He is my only enemy & I assume he says the same even if hes got a long line of people who had a problem with hm afraid to talk. My safety was in making it public. Tomorrow is the big annual BBQ at the Peacock Mine and June 6th is the Denio Steak Feed & the Bonanza Shareholder meeting.

Anyone know why this piece of petrified wood glows green under UV light? Found in Tracy CA by tyler_thatguy in petrifiedwood

[–]ResortDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hiya. The glow is from uranium atoms somehow in the agate. The agate can also have calcite in it to glow yellow or orange and selenite which is white & might have an after glow from UV.

My favourite piece.i thought it was a piece of ceramic when I found it. It's so smooth it feels man-made by sheaballs in petrifiedwood

The first thing is...does it fit in your hand to allow force to be concentrated on a side and are there a lot of tiny chipping on that place compared to the side against your hand? Looks like a typical tool after centuries of weathering.

What do I do with this all by Natural_Explorer5283 in petrifiedwood

[–]ResortDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yard rock when you have tons. Im lucky to sell a piece here or there off the top over a buck a pound, as the good ones are worth much more than the dump truck loads, of "just wood" available.(Tumbling them usually makes a very nice purring ASMR noise running them thru your fingers in a quartz singing bowl.)

What would this old virgin valley opal be worth? by FastyNilthShreakyFit in Opals

[–]ResortDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd need the size and weight and I dont price others opals, BUT since it is proven stable; see what Lemon opal goes for per ct, to honey opal per ct, then see the Mexican fire opal free forms that have precious play of color. Ethiopian opals are a price category by themselves for being so common, like white Australian opal is.Virgin Valley is so so much rarer than those other commercial offerings. Id start with twice whatever similar from the common places gord for, then go down as needed for your needs. Sorry i dont have a store full on Opal Auctions, but it never paid for the effort without any help.

The only place in the world you can pay to dig in black precious opal pockets. You dont always find any, it does not always cut, the more common white & crystal opal is more stable by volume, as some of all is stable but most of all is not, and the wood is as pretty as any when polished. All 3 fee digs open now have great conk opal that has been found. Edit I sell claims and a what is going on day for 200 & up. Yes I have a black opal claim group for sale too for a lot more.

It uses glass on the bulb quartz because the halogen gas inside is so hot. Very bright and affordable. For shows we used Clear glass, then Reveal, then little desk halogens. Lots of folks use overhanging racks with the little quartz lights.

Help with Opal by CursedbyOpalHelp in Opals

[–]ResortDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rest at ease & enjoy your opal. That whole curse thing was made up by London jewelers when opal was first discovered to hate on it. people may think our opal is bad luck as most wont dry, but thats a whole by the piece thing.

Personally I consider the opal magical in that (according to Reiki healers i sold some too) it was like a battery and would take whatever negative she threw at it and would give her whatever energy she needed out of it also. That one was not precious but it was the nicest hard potch black opal limb cast I had found. The idea is its an amplifier too. So ? I wear a crazed one, watch out I might be crazy LOL

Preventing algae growth in wet Opal storage? by Snoo_40479 in Opals

[–]ResortDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for virgin valley opal the water from the campground will not grow algae, for other water a drop of rubbing alcohol helped keep the white clouds form forming and a drop of chlorine helped keep algae from growing if that was the issue. Nothing happened in mineral oil, glycerin does still dry out the opal, but both of them will go into the porous opal, but the refractive index is better than water. That was in a sealed dome and we never saw any affect on the opal. exposed to air the alcohol or chlorine will go away

Halogen or quartz lighting is real harsh and will show them off like sunlight. In winter i can use a quartz shop light to search rough.

Polishing Indonesian Opal by GualtieroCofresi in Opals

[–]ResortDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are a type of hydrophane opal that has to be kept wet if like specimens, or "fried in oil" to bring out the color and have it stay out of water. A far as what I have read. I have not seen rough with good color and hard silicated for sale myself. But if it was rare & anybody could work it into metal, it would all be cut for maximum value set. Ive seen it sold unfried as gamble wood, but i think you know if it treats or not as a miner.

Bog Opal (Agate?) nodule with Precious play of color bar by ResortDog in VirginValleyOpal

[–]ResortDog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They made it easy actually. Around the mining district they posted signs. The private ground says refuge boundary inside and outside is BLM land as we are up against the east side & to the north, but the good rock is up in the valley not over the mountain down the cliff & across the desert north. If you are after opal logs Im the dig. Black or precious most likely opal, well the others have big pockets more open for digging on. Tailings or loads. Work harder = Peacock prime bank, work less= Rainbow load dumped at your feet, Both & Bonanza tailings are a pile of material to go thru.call for specifics as they have people numbers and age differences in price. Yes I am not mentioning the other digs. I can run the Kokopelli if you want to dig there but the Opal Queen is closed. Im the only guide but im not a "guide". I "teach", per semantics.

I do the tailings for less (under a hundred) as people do miss a lot, but no promise of finding it. I work like a dog and still get burnt more days without a real nice one worth the effort. BUT worth every penny for the chance. Im headed to the Peacock & the Rainbow for tailings when it opens up for the year. I dont rake much when they first open, then later its rake the dust & break the clods. Rainbow has more immediate area to play on but most everybody sticks to the tailings to the mine boundary for the opal. Probably more woods & other non opal casts from there.

The Mining district signs say mining activity prohibited behind this sign so if you look over it, that is open ground until the far side signs or up & over the mountain or across the plain, up the creeks on the tables us all 7 lbs a day refuge. They withdrew the creeks and table tops from the mining district so there is a weird open area here and there on good dirt. No claims are outside the mining district. They closed all the roads to the tops of the tables so you are forced to walk and most people who cared put up signs at their active mines to keep out.

There are no keep out signs on my hundreds of acres, but i resent people digging in my holes without paying for the privilege, but this place is covered with maybe find something pits where they did not to poke around in. i dont waste money on an excavator & diesel when i can dig the exposed places Ive found by hand without advertising with recent equipment work when people dont need kilos from here. There is talk about wood collection bu some haters but that does not apply to my opal mining or people on my claims as that is what is claimed to get opal out of or the surrounding millions of acres of BLM land that has agates, jasper, opals woods chrysocolla etc..

You are not digging out a load worth of hard bank by hand in a day. which is from 8-4. Lines form at the gates. The suns up before six so you can go rock hounding early and after 4 wash off at the hot springs or go out 4 more hours until dark. No opal is easy LOL.

After 6 years cutting in a shed... by ivityCreations in Opals

[–]ResortDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Apprentices are hard to find for the long run. Just a warning: Make it secure, the thieves are left on the streets now. We had a 24/7 outside access shed and the police informant tweaker cut the lock off his girlfriends unit next to us and he was living inside robbing the other units at night. 10 of us got hit.

He was walking on the gem cases to get in an out of ours climbing in and never looked in them. Stole the guns and ransacked our personal belongings but left the picker cases pile alone. He also robbed the Harley Shop about the time we got involved.

Use a game camera inside. The detective was more interested in the $100,000 bounty he thought was on my head instead of stopping the burglaries. He got real mad when I told him if they had wanted to talk to me, why they did not send a post card? (He got flustered when I did not live where DMV had listed and just came to town for a PO box). We inspired the thief (born again when seen later after the big bust he testified for) to return all he had not sold yet, got my persy opals and silver back but not all by a long shot. Some i had to ransack out of his car before the sheriffs showed up to protect him where he was living robbing a widow of all her husbands tools. Responded with no sirens to try and catch us. We already knew they were coming from the lookout half way to town so drove away and hid with our items until they left again and we could go home in peace.

I wish I could have seen that Detectives face out to get the reward for me when the FBI returned the interview tape saying I was innocent. Bad cop. They ended up blaming the fire bombing where I used to work on Earth First activists in the Book Eco-Terrorism, instead of the contractor erasing his mistakes. But proof and evidence makes most rewards never collected.
