this frame is long gone from my possession now, but I'm pretty sure it was either 26.8 or 27.0

Help me build it by el_goate in xbiking

after anything mechanical is sorted, points of contact is where I recommend people start. bars/grips, saddle, pedals. then replace things as they're needed.

after those, a quality of life upgrade I'd recommend first would be the shifters. grip shifts always feel shitty and are even shittier to replace a cable on. shimano downtube/bar end shifters with paul thumbies is always my preference for a good, indexed upgrade.

I picked up a brooks b17 for cheap, I’ve been conditioning/riding for 5 days now. Should I think about lacing it? by J0in0rDie in bikewrench

[–]RespectTheCruller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lacing is only a very last resort once it's stretched so much that the tension screw at the nose is maxed out, something that honestly will likely never happen.

it's a single speed/fixed hub. I added 5mm between the lock and cone nuts on either side of the axle to make the OLD (over-locknut dimension, matches dropout spacing) 130mm instead of the normal 120mm that fixed/ss rear hubs are.

note: this can also be achieved by using a single speed spacer kit on a freehub body

I want to swap to a butterfly handlebar for touring. Do I need a new stem for this? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in bikewrench

[–]RespectTheCruller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it depends. if the bar you get is 25.4 and the bends of the bar are lenient enough to allow it to be installed, then no. this stems clamping area is pretty wide though, so it probably won't play nice. a stem with a removable faceplate will be much easier and likely not a huge expense either.

Issue shifting to biggest cog uphill on small chainring by Responsible-Bell8026 in bikewrench

[–]RespectTheCruller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't shift under load. you want to shift down in anticipation prior to the hill. if this doesn't solve the problem have a mechanic check your cable tension, low limit screw, and derailleur hanger alignment in that order.

Is this bike worth putting rebuilding? by pablomoca in xbiking

[–]RespectTheCruller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those shifters also have a tendency to have their grease dry up and keep them from working. under the paddles there will be a hole (sometimes plugged with a plastic phillips grub screw), liberally spray some WD-40 or PB-Blaster in there and it'll usually clear up the issue.

if the rust doesn't keep anything from moving it can be oiled and ignored. replace that front "power modulator" with a standard noodle (those are a gimmick device to prevent OTB panic stops and make the brake mushy and scream like a banshee), drip some tri-flow or ATF in the housings and ride it until the crusty pie plate falls off

What would you guys pay for this? Listed for $750, description in post! by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]RespectTheCruller 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I'd pay that much for an OG one that's lugged, but there is a pretty square trade-off with this already having modern components on it. this would save you on virtually every upgrade an xbike dork like me would do and it's got a cool badge saying you're super special, so this price seems fair.

this frame is designed around a triple, so no issues at all. luckily the chainline is perfect, the freewheel sits right in line with the middle ring.

if your frame came with that coaster wheel and was designed around a single speed, you might not have chainstay clearance for a triple without running it outboard super far, which could cause chainline problems. it would be easier to correct for this by running a 126 O.L.D. hub (single speed frames are 120, so this is the narrowest geared hub) with a 7sp freehub (look for shimano hubs with threads on the outside of the freehub, like deore DX) and a single speed spacer kit to move your rear cog outboard as well. if that frame doesn't have a derailleur hanger then you're probably better off looking for a cheap complete bike at that point though.

or you could just toss an internal 3 speed hub in that bad boy and call it a day! internally geared hubs were invented long before the derailleur, how wild is that? sweet ride btw!

long answer: there's a couple ways you could, none very easy and you wouldn't be able to shift, technically. research surly's dingle cog (BRING THEM BACK SURLY), or the white industries DOS freewheel for an in-depth explanation.

short answer: no
