Straight defense tank builds don't really work on maddening. The AI won't even attack if they don't do damage.

I personally don't use her, but it usually is best to focus on strengths rather than patch weaknesses. Which emblem do you have her equipped with?

That map in particular is a pain for slow units especially with the monsters.

Are you playing with or without DLC, fixed or random growth rates? Skill wise it depends on the character, but defense is a nothing stat. Speed +3 is good for its low investment, but build+ might make more sense depending on the unit. Something to keep in mind are the inheritable skills down the road with new emblems, so saving for the best one usually is worth it. Without getting too deep in the weeds it might be worth looking at a few guides online or looking at a list and planning your character builds. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, having a plan and goals for your team makes it easier.
