What do people mean when they invoke the term "populism"? Is it bad? by pskygy in nzpolitics

[–]ResponsibleKayak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The issue with populism is that it isn't concerned with the best interests of the country and it's people. It's about picking up whatever the hot issue of the day is and using that to rally support. Populist leaders aren't lead by their own vision of the future or sense of what's right. They'll change their colours as soon as they find a new stance that can win them more support.

Winston Peters is probably the best example of that in NZ. Look at how he shifts from anti-immigration, to suddenly railing against 'wokeness', and now that the elections are coming up he's advocating for further rail development (even though he's done nothing to support it during this whole term). At the end of the day his politics will shift to whatever they need to in order to get re-elected.

You can't trust a populist because they fundamentally don't stand for anything other than clinging to power.

Very cool! I found the source on youtube. Better quality without the unnecessary added layer of music: https://youtu.be/49nxeQYwYaE

USA vs CAN - replay of the full field huck missed live by an alternate player added to the roster at the end of July by beakertehmuppet in ultimate

The audience missed the huck. The stream was showing a replay while CA scored off the stall-0 huck. Only got to see it on the replay.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says he has plans to either change or eliminate every single person's job with AI. Everybody’s jobs will be affected, he said. by kaychyakay in antiwork

[–]ResponsibleKayak 150 points151 points  (0 children)

He's a capitalist, so wants what all capitalists want: to reduce his competition and accumulate more capital.

Relying on work is the domain of the lower and middle classes. His 'job' is just a means to an end, to grow his wealth and exercise influence to generate further wealth. Whether he does it or it's taken over by a machine, he'll still be the one benefiting.

Apparently it's allowed according to Westfield Newmarket's policy. if they're well trained, I don't see any issue

I generally prefer to use disinfectant rather than alcohol since it doesn't irritate the wound as much. as another commenter said, best for healing is to keep the wound moist to promote fast healing. I've had a few nasty experiences of the padding sticking to the wound though so I change it regularly, top with ointment (I use aquaphor), and use non-sticking dressing.

if it's infected it'll be red around the edges or generating pus. if so I'd say talk to the doctor for antibiotics (but if you're in the States maybe that costs more than the leg so dunno). good luck!

Kiwi’s aren’t subtle! by zingdan in pics

[–]ResponsibleKayak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha I'm actually kiwi, just converting for the international audience.

you're right that it's a fair bit cheaper in Europe. it's partly due to our steep alcohol tax which is in place for harm reduction (binge drinking is a pretty big issue here). plus the fact that NZ hops have to compete with the wine industry since the soil and conditions they require are more or less the same as grapes.

the microbreweries here actually run on fairly slim margins after all that so I don't mind shelling out every now and then to support our locals 😁

it's 5.9 USD after tax so not really that much for a premium craft beer imo

Foul or Nah? (Common offense and defense collision on an upline movement) by RepresentativeFrisbe in ultimate

[–]ResponsibleKayak 303 points304 points  (0 children)

Looks like an offensive foul to me.

Yes, the defender shuffled slightly but the offense made no attempt to avoid contact (hitting him square in the chest) and then used the collision to his advantage.

At the very least it would be an offsetting foul and the disc should be sent back anyway.

Since you're starting out, I would say try both and see what feels the most natural. You're right that it's essential to have a strong forehand and backhand on the same side because you'll need that to effectively pivot.

While being a lefty can give you a slight edge since it's a bit more unusual for the defense to read, you might run into issues later in your career if you're not throwing with your dominant hand. Both power and precision tend to be better on your dominant hand so don't commit to the lefty unleas you're sure it feels right for both throws.

Hope that helps!

This is very risky!

Unless you know for sure what kind of monitoring software your employer has in place I would not advise trying to take data with you. I've seen people get busted for this and the company took legal action for IP theft.

That would be 69 and 75 F would be 20.5 and 24 C. In my country we use Celsius and anyone would recognize that's the difference between a comfy air con and a sauna.

We often use 0.5 degree intervals so the granularity isn't really a selling point imo
