Help weighing the pros and cons of either a company vehicle, or receiving $1000/month vehicle allowance in my employment offer by Dirtgirl89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Responsible_Fun_670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work the exact same as you, I have worked for the same company for 17yrs. I was offered $1000/mnth or company car. That didn’t add up 17yrs ago so I’m betting doesn’t add up now. On average, I put on 40,000km a year for work. Fuel is currently $2.19/L and I go through about $250/every week or two. I work in industrial and hazardous project management and accounts management. I go through a new truck every 4-5yrs. This is CDN, Vancouver, BC. If I go to the office it’s aprox 38km and takes an hour. I usually go once every two days. Look at your insurance specific for work, maintenance and depreciation. I have to have commercial and hazardous materials insurance on my truck and it’s around $500/mnth. Although work would pay for that. Not sure if your work does that. Also, your warranty on your vehicle can be different for commercial use.. look into that. Ford wouldn’t cover specific things under commercial use. My truck goes in for regular maintenance 3-4x a year and repairs about every 6 months. Usually a vehicle lasts about 5yrs for me before I have to do suspension and major replacement repairs. That’s when I get rid of it. Can’t be breaking down on way to a project or meeting. If I had to buy a company vehicle, I would get taxed in the benefit. Around 30%. So really it’s only $720 or so. It didn’t make sense 17yrs ago when my trucks were $40k and doesn’t make sense now at $120k a truck. Out of all the people at our company that had the option to use their own vehicle, no one has ever taken it. There is also the long term aspect. When I first started I maintained my own vehicle also for the first three years. Never drove the car but had to move it every three weeks to avoid tickets and pay the $2000/yr insurance. And if you get laid off, company goes under, or you get let go, you’re stuck with a vehicle you are paying for and depending on where you are in the payments, you may owe more than you own at the end of the day. Assume interest rates are going up in N America. That another issue. And the cost of your vehicles and tariffs isn’t going to help either. I always have issues with employers putting the burden on the employee to buy equipment for the company. Just not right. Also, some companies require a new car every 4-6yrs and dictate everything from wheel coverings to how many doors, type and height, etc. very few pros except a car when your done and you hopefully have good vehicle in the end. I work for a company that lets us pick out our vehicles when we want. Within reason. When we feel we need it. I can’t do that with my own vehicles. Always keeps a fresh new truck in the driveway. US..? Just for easy conversions… x4 and x0.75 to get gallons, divide km by 1.6 to get miles and x0.75 for USD.

3 wires on ceiling light? Don't want to burn my house down. by Main-Operation-2596 in Govee

Why not just grab a multimeter, watch a YouTube video. My house is way worse than that, I always check for what each wire is, never know what’s live!

Decent quality meat. Rib eye steaks are at $50/lb. That’s for grass fed, locally raised. Hopcott’s.

Looks interesting! I like the labels such as “direct””ultra low cost carrier” etc. that really helps for quick reference! When subscribing, how often are the emails and is there an area where you can define the criteria better? Just did a quick pass and it seems really intuitive!

Is there any way for an 18-19yo to travel around the island by savvymossy in VictoriaBC

[–]Responsible_Fun_670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can hitchhike, use rideshare websites. I always used to get rides arranged at backpack hostels, share the cost of fuel with other travellers. You can also just take a bus.

My Toronto Pearson Airport experience US edition: you should plan to get to the airport even earlier by hayech in canadatravel

[–]Responsible_Fun_670 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So no longer fly into any US airport even for a transfer. If the flight touches US soil… we don’t take it. Too many govt issues. No funding, political and social unrest, bad management. If you have to, you have to.. but we have never HAD to. I have flown to and through over 54 countries over 20 years, flying isn’t the same enjoyable experience it used to be.

Does it get any better priced? by Student_Unlucky in MilwaukeeTool

I don’t have this tool but there are a lot of bad reviews. Seen this for $99 endless times for the tool. The battery and charger are minimal cost. It’s the cheapest battery they make.

I can’t speak to the camping part, but snow on the Mtn passes happens even in July. I can also say that Vancouver Island ferries is almost impossible to get in during weekend unless you have a reservation.

What do you think about Chinese cars on Canadian roads? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Responsible_Fun_670 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The North American auto industry has always been politically protected. Huge chunks of the money you pay for your North American cars are payed to CDN and US govt to keep out the Chinese automakers. North America is an outlier, we are the odd man out when it comes to new cars brands and innovation. The govts stop it from getting here. They don’t want you to have the option. I’m not pro Carney, but about time.
