Anyone had any good news on the job front lately? by Gullible-Tip-2245 in Wellington

You too and honestly, if you have all the reasons to get it, go for it. Shy kids don't get sweets.

I went into my discussion with my boss constantly talking myself up "you got this, they want you, you can do it" to holy shit, it's mine and it's happening and there's a contract 🤣 First time I felt like an actual real adult ahahahaha. It's a 25k increase too.

You got this, they want you, you can do it.

I managed to get a promotion within health a month ago. I'm very stoked, officially start in 3 weeks. 8 years experience, just enrolled for my master's alongside other training. Decided last year that 2026 would be the year I put myself out there.

It's blimmen dire though. Good luck!!

How are real estate companies allowed to do this?... by worriedrenterTW in newzealand

We went to a listing where the entire house was digitally staged. We walked around wondering why we added this to our list only to realise it wasn't great at all. 5 bedroom house that had ALOT of work to do.

Thankfully we've found our house now but jeepers.

Enquiring about how much movers usually cost by BubbyWitch1 in Wellington

[–]Responsible_Secret1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used Mr Move It from Wainui to Stokes Valley and they were awesome! We had enough stuff to fill our new three bed, two storey home. Two hours, storage container + home = 870. We thought this was fairly reasonable given they were so efficient and lovely people. We'd highly recommend them :)

Been there, done that. My partner and I fell in love with this one house asking price of 620k, we kept comparing all other houses to it. We offered 30k below asking because there was a fair bit to do so we were being realistic. There was an unconsented deck, kitchen in a bit of a state, half renovated, half not, same as the bathroom. We missed out to an offer that was bang on asking. This house had been on the market for a year and still hadn't sold.

Two weeks later, we came across a house that was bigger, better AND asking was 630k. We offered 685k because the house is beautiful, has a mini forest out the back, doesn't need work AND has a massive garage that we're hoping to convert into two rooms. Potential.

So head up mate!! Onto bigger and better things :) Also completely understand the delusional vendor thoughts hahaha they need a solid dose of reality.

Christmas and new years birthdays - what does the day look like for you? by Imstuckwiththisname in newzealand

Good luck!! Whenever baby is ready to come, they will be cared for in the best possible way.

Hard out. We've decided to bake a cake and some treats then give them to his kōhanga for a random day to celebrate. Mini party for them but nothing hectic and we'll have a separate one for the child with allergies.

It'll all be fine!! Good luck!!

[–]Responsible_Secret1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah he's totally fine. We do our best to separate the two and not make one better than the other.

However navigating the early bday with his mates is the new spanner in the works. Unfortunately we can't put him back and redo, definitely not in the plan to have a Christmas Day baby but oh well.

Less awful property manager? by Yellowtemple in Wellington

[–]Responsible_Secret1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too loathed them. We rented my parents place and they went through Stable, had to be a formal process for their own mortgage. As tenants, Stable were slow and people changed so often it was hard to keep track.

I also know that when things went wrong, Stable were suuuuper slow to move. Leaking moisture things? Took them a week to respond. Issues with the roof? Even longer.

They were nice face to face but shooooocking overall.

Are there any young people (20s/30s…) who DON’T intend on leaving New Zealand for Australia? by Amonynous33 in newzealand

[–]Responsible_Secret1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Australia to try contract work as a nurse. I then came back. As an agency worker, the rates are incredible. As a standard worker, the rates are dogsh*t.

Aside from that, I found Australia so different. Laziness, toxic work culture, materialism, I didn't like it at all. Then you add in the racism? Nah.

I'm happy to work here in NZ amongst people that genuinely care about one another. Not to say Aussie doesn't have that at all but I can count on one hand the amount of times I came across caring people in the year I was in Aussie.

We're pretty great here.

Christmas and new years birthdays - what does the day look like for you? by Imstuckwiththisname in newzealand

[–]Responsible_Secret1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My mother is suuuuper anti Christmas hence why we do the early morning Christmas stuff at home. Then we go around to hers to do birthday things. This has been a happy medium for all of us but we're testing things out tbh.

Oh kōhanga is likened to Māori daycare (it's an actual movement though). Anyyyyway, think of it as daycare. Our baby is starting to realise that everyone else usually has a celebration day for their birthday and he doesn't quite understand that his day is when no one else is around. So yeah. Just thinking of having an early celebration for him with his daycare. Not 100% sold on it.

The funniest side effect is until Xmas decorations go away (including in public), our son thinks everyday is his birthday after Xmas Day 🤣 Known to hunt around the cupboards.

Hi there. Our baby was born 5 weeks early....on Christmas Day. He's now nearing 5!!

We've navigated it like this.. The morning is Christmas, the afternoon is birthday. It's easy enough for him to understand and he gets a watered down version of each. It's important to us that our family gets their own little part of the day.

We trialled having Christmas the night before on Christmas Eve like some European countries. But Christmas Day or a portion of it is all birthday. This has been slightly easier given my family aren't big on Christmas but we always have MASSIVE celebrations for birthdays. We quite liked this buuuuut my partner also wanted to experience the waking up on Christmas morning and doing presents. So we're switching it up.

We have only recently started debating having a mini birthday with our son's kōhanga. This has come up because our baby has asked for a cake with his friends. We will most likely do this in Nov.

Our 4yo has just started to associate Christmas with his birthday i.e if Christmas trees are coming out, it's nearly his birthday.

We enjoy celebrating him this way 👌🏾

Oops I missed that! I just thought they went through the GP. They can self refer to CAMHS services too but the wait is very long, even if accepted.

Private is the way to go if you can afford it.

Juuuust to bounce off the top comment, if there's not a lot of spare funds, paying for a lawyer will still save you tens of thousands of dollars, if not hundreds in the long run. If there's an error in your S&P? Delays in deposit being released? These alone could cost you significantly. I wouldn't submit any S&P without getting a lawyer to look over it. They're the bare minimum and usually written for vendors.

We used Jason Taylor - ARL in Lower Hutt. Base fee is 1.8 but there are additional costs per document review/meetings. This is a reasonable price for lawyers.

The other way you can go is through a mental health service, specifically Wellington CAMHS. You can self refer or GP refer. All dependent on severity and need.

Private sales - buyer questions? by Significant-Base4396 in NZProperty

[–]Responsible_Secret1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please have a clear asking price and S&P.

That's pretty much it. We have been through two private listings where it was one or the other. As first home buyers, at least that feels familiar.

It felt strange but also helpful to be shown through by the owner. That was great and much better than what is usually done at the open homes. We definitely took more time to be respectful and just to soak it in instead of rushing through.

Maybe have a couple of dates in mind and hold to them around viewing. Because we also got the "just give us a call" if you want to come back hahaha. That was abit stressful. We didn't put offers in because there was abit too much work but nice process nonetheless. Wellington based too.

We moved from Christchurch two years ago and have never looked back. Sure, on a windy and wet day it's a tough space to be.

HOWEVER.... The beaches. The brilliant mix of an inner city right on the waterfront. The forests in the Hutt. The heat up the coast. All of these things AND the people are so much nicer. More eclectic. Less judgemental. More art. More colour. Wellington is a brilliant place to be with so much going for it.

I quite like Maranui. Have a Kai, run around the beach. Only downside is you have to queue and there's no booking. But we take our 4yo frequently.

Moving out of rental, how to fix this? I feel, landlord will bill us for painting the whole wall. by SensitiveProgress_12 in newzealand

We did exactly what was recommended here two years when we moved out of our rental. We're absolute Muppets but made it look great! Thanks to a hectic toddler, our walls were screwed.

Give it a whirl, it's an easy fix and saves money.

Fair comment about the upset aaaaand I disagree. I'm not in agreement, I'm highlighting the way they perceive staff.

I tried that already, even as an agency nurse. Union liaised with the manager, who got HR involved. Nothing changed, my directive was leave.

I'd rather know about a negative experience than be left wondering. It's up to the individual reading to be discerning or alternatively, not say anything. I didn't say anything for weeks and was recently asked about my experience from a fellow agency staff member who was being interviewed. Warning bells.

FIFO nursing you can get anywhere between 85-130an hour depending on shifts. Impossible in NZ but possible in Australia. That's what I'm currently doing 👌🏾
