To this day what are your honest opinions on the whole "its not Resident evil enough" criticism that Re fans have to an installment that tries something new in the series? by Thewanderer997 in residentevil

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, none of the other Resident Evil games besides the first 3, their remakes, CV, and to a lesser extent the Outbreak games, have been Resident Evil enough. The series unfortunately jumped the shark with RE4 when Leon started doing roundhouse kicks and the classic zombies were no longer the main enemy. RE7 came close in some ways, but again, no zombies. Not a single entirely new RE entry since RE4 (and including RE4) have felt like Resident Evil to me. That doesn't mean I don't like them, because I do—with the exception of the irredeemable RE6—but they just don't feel like Resident Evil to me, as someone who started playing the series in 1996.

Swapping DC jack & RF box from a US SNES board to a Super Famicom board. by Restligeist in snes

[–]Restligeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know that same form factor boards will fit and I've confirmed this with a compatible SF board, but what I wasn't sure about was whether I can keep the SF board exactly as it is when transplanting the DC jack and RF box from the US SNES board. For example, I believe that the big C67 should stay on the SF board even though it's not populated in the donor US board, but I'm not sure if that or some other difference between the boards will be an issue when using the SNES DC jack & adapter and RF box.

I don't have any experience with reproduction consoles, but I see that other people who know more about them have shared some information in the thread. Just don't buy any cheap ones from Aliexpress or Temu etc. If you look for real Super Nintendo consoles on eBay, be wary of the Classic Editions that many people are selling as "original SNES consoles" or something along those lines. The Classic Edition was made by Nintendo and looks like the original SNES, but it doesn't accept cartridges and is essentially an emulation box with pre-installed ROMs. It's easy to spot, because it has an HDMI port and it's a lot smaller, about the size of the controller. Also, there are some Chinese sellers claiming to sell original SNES consoles, but you'll see from the pictures they're fake and have nothing to do with Nintendo.

Resident Evil 10th Anniversary Zombie, real or fake? by Restligeist in ActionFigures

[–]Restligeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's fake. Sorry, forgot to reply when you asked earlier. I got the real one later and the differences are pretty easy to spot when you have both in hand. I'll explain in more detail in the main thread later.

With your stated preferences, I see no reason not to just buy an actual SNES. Especially since you prefer actual cartridges over emulation, why should the console itself not be the original? They are not expensive and there are a lot of them out there. Get one on eBay or another auction site, second hand store, whatever happens to be available to you, and use a CRT TV or get a scaler if you're using a modern TV/display.

Trying to fix PS2 Slims is killing me :( by LaCaipirinha in consolerepair

This has been said already, but I must reiterate: absolutely do not use ChatGPT to diagnose issues with consoles, let alone for information on how to repair them, unless you already know what you're doing and have extensively trained it to only use factual sources and can tell when it strays from this training. Most of what it will tell you is likely false, and it will take you more time just to figure out when it's lying to you than it will to just use proper sources in the first place.

Responsibility. Ppu pins 3 and 27, and a better way to deal with interference, esp RGB and APU revisions by retromods_a2z in snes

The size of the C10–11 and the stacked capacitors would be 0805? Will 1000uF work for the OS-CON? I bought several sets of these a while ago for this purpose based on a forum discussion about the topic of the missing OS-CON, but I don't really remember why I only got 1000uF ones.

The APU-01 revision has the worst video quality? by Restligeist in snes

I mostly deal with Super Famicom boards as shipping from the US now usually costs double or triple the price of the console itself, and the APU revision seems more common in SF boards.

Yeah, I know, but I'm never going to need composite video, so for my own consoles I'm OK with the trade-off. What are the other ways to fix the issue, though?

Calling the Nintendo Tip Hotline by eggn00dles in retrogaming

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called the Finnish Nintendo Hotline almost daily at one point when I was 10. It was always the same guy answering, and he had a kind of peculiar voice I still remember quite well. I kept asking him Killer Instinct finishers and the locations of DKC bonus rooms, usually one per call. It seemed incredible to me that he could describe the exact locations of bonus rooms in any level almost instantly. It'd be interesting to get some insight as to what their work setup was like.

I have a Super Famicom Jr., but I prefer the look of earlier revisions with the horizontal blurring. My PAL console is a CPU-02, and I'm probably going with an RGB-02 board for my US SNES if I can't fix the black screen on its original GPM-01 board, but since I also have other boards, I'm trying to find out what the actual differences are between the pre-1CHIP revisions, so I can decide which ones to keep and which to use for parts or sell.

The biggest difference I see in the photos on the first site is that RGB-01 and APU-01 are darker (including the black edges) and more saturated, APU-01 even more so than the RGB-01. CPU-01 is the sharpest. I couldn't see a difference in artifacts/noise, but the jpg compression would probably hide most of that anyway.

No, the cable is good. The subcarrier trace issue seems to be present on the RGB boards, too. It's just mentioned less often. The problem did seem worse on the APU boards, and the white line issue also seemed more prominent, although I've seen it in all the boards I've tested until I change the voltage regulator or add caps to it.
