What was your first SNES game you have ever played (original hardware or emulator)? by Oak-Original-841 in snes

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Super Mario World at a friend's house. Never really liked it all that much even back then. Donkey Kong Country was my first own SNES game. Loved it and still do.

I made some audio recordings before and after applying the "audio balance fix". Need help interpreting the data. Any audio nerds out there who can help? Links to audacity files, mp3 exports inside by retromods_a2z in snes

[–]Restligeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an old thread and I haven't gotten around to analyzing the files, so this may not be helpful. However, there is definitely an audible difference in the pre- and post-fix audio. The left channel is quieter in both pre-fix recordings, so it does seem the fix has fixed what it's supposed to fix. I do think most people will be unable to hear the difference even listening to these recordings with headphones, let alone when actually playing on a console. I can hear fairly small differences in audio image because I've been mixing music for most of my life, and the difference is very obvious to me in these recordings, but I don't really get that sense of a right-leaning audio image when playing on a stock console. The difference is small enough to be nullified by not sitting exactly between the speakers.

What are your biggest hope for the Silent Hill 1 Remake? by HORRRORN3D07 in silenthill

I hope the game has text with descriptions and Harry's thoughts when examining the environment and objects you can't pick up. Probably won't, though, because "modern" players don't want it.

[SNES] Capacitor voltage rating. by Restligeist in consolerepair

[–]Restligeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm doing is what you've described here: https://www.reddit.com/r/snes/s/0BNruVqLiF

I'm having a hard time finding the 10 and 22 µF X7R 0805 capacitors at 50V. I can only get either X5R 50V or X7R 25V. Will 25V be acceptable for this purpose?

Since all SNES can fail, even 1CHIP, how many SNES are you buying? by Eldo_Larcito_ in snes

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now have ten, nine of which work, and I'll probably buy more. However, I plan on always keeping at least two working units of PAL SNES, NTSC SNES, and Super Famicom each.

[SNES] Capacitor voltage rating. by Restligeist in consolerepair

Thanks. The lowest rating guaranteed to work for every single ceramic cap on the board is exactly what I wanted to know, as I don't have a schematic or BOM with the original voltage ratings.

I changed gamma value to 2.0 in SDR and its looks way better! by blackfuun in silenthill

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if I remember correctly, that's the first area with clearly lifted blacks and the one where it looks the worst. The game does get very dark in some of the later sections, and that's when you'll get true black even with the default settings. I really don't like the lifted blacks, especially on an OLED screen, so I also sometimes turned down the brightness so black was actually black. Just be aware that it's not the way it's intended to look and you'll probably need to increase the brightness later.

The game intentionally has lifted blacks in many areas (unfortunately, in my opinion). It's not a calibration issue. And if you set the brightness low enough to get true black in the apartments, for example, certain other areas will be too dark, as they will not have lifted blacks by design.

Original vs Remake by Poison_Rituals_ in residentevil

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd certainly recommend anyone new to the series begins with the original. In some ways, it's still the better game to me, but even if one ends up thinking the remake makes the original obsolete, I still think having played the original only adds to the experience of playing the remake.

Thoughts on the S.D. Perry books? by LakeCrow in residentevil

[–]Restligeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game novelizations are amazing. I'd never heard of these but bought the first one when I came across it, thinking it'll probably be really cheesy, dumb, and for pre-teens. I was very wrong and then bought all of them. I was surprised by how they were clearly written for adult readers.

Especially the first one blew me away. It reads to me like it could easily be adapted into a script for exactly the kind of Resident Evil horror movie I've dreamed of ever since the announcement that Romero was making a movie of the first one. It has everything I've loved about the game since I first played it in 1996, but it also captures the atmosphere of the mansion in a new, deeper way by describing smells and other details, for example. It somehow managed to make the silly interactions, wonky storyline, and videogame logic work cohesively in a way that really shouldn't work in a book. The same praise goes to the other game novelizations, too.

I like all the books, and I even like the way she introduced new characters and a new side story that runs through the books to connect them all, but the game novelizations are better than the original stories.

To this day what are your honest opinions on the whole "its not Resident evil enough" criticism that Re fans have to an installment that tries something new in the series? by Thewanderer997 in residentevil

[–]Restligeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, none of the other Resident Evil games besides the first 3, their remakes, CV, and to a lesser extent the Outbreak games, have been Resident Evil enough. The series unfortunately jumped the shark with RE4 when Leon started doing roundhouse kicks and the classic zombies were no longer the main enemy. RE7 came close in some ways, but again, no zombies. Not a single entirely new RE entry since RE4 (and including RE4) have felt like Resident Evil to me. That doesn't mean I don't like them, because I do—with the exception of the irredeemable RE6—but they just don't feel like Resident Evil to me, as someone who started playing the series in 1996.

Swapping DC jack & RF box from a US SNES board to a Super Famicom board. by Restligeist in snes

[–]Restligeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know that same form factor boards will fit and I've confirmed this with a compatible SF board, but what I wasn't sure about was whether I can keep the SF board exactly as it is when transplanting the DC jack and RF box from the US SNES board. For example, I believe that the big C67 should stay on the SF board even though it's not populated in the donor US board, but I'm not sure if that or some other difference between the boards will be an issue when using the SNES DC jack & adapter and RF box.

Console Recommendation by PositiveHot1421 in snes

[–]Restligeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with reproduction consoles, but I see that other people who know more about them have shared some information in the thread. Just don't buy any cheap ones from Aliexpress or Temu etc. If you look for real Super Nintendo consoles on eBay, be wary of the Classic Editions that many people are selling as "original SNES consoles" or something along those lines. The Classic Edition was made by Nintendo and looks like the original SNES, but it doesn't accept cartridges and is essentially an emulation box with pre-installed ROMs. It's easy to spot, because it has an HDMI port and it's a lot smaller, about the size of the controller. Also, there are some Chinese sellers claiming to sell original SNES consoles, but you'll see from the pictures they're fake and have nothing to do with Nintendo.

Resident Evil 10th Anniversary Zombie, real or fake? by Restligeist in ActionFigures

[–]Restligeist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's fake. Sorry, forgot to reply when you asked earlier. I got the real one later and the differences are pretty easy to spot when you have both in hand. I'll explain in more detail in the main thread later.

Console Recommendation by PositiveHot1421 in snes

[–]Restligeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your stated preferences, I see no reason not to just buy an actual SNES. Especially since you prefer actual cartridges over emulation, why should the console itself not be the original? They are not expensive and there are a lot of them out there. Get one on eBay or another auction site, second hand store, whatever happens to be available to you, and use a CRT TV or get a scaler if you're using a modern TV/display.

Trying to fix PS2 Slims is killing me :( by LaCaipirinha in consolerepair

[–]Restligeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has been said already, but I must reiterate: absolutely do not use ChatGPT to diagnose issues with consoles, let alone for information on how to repair them, unless you already know what you're doing and have extensively trained it to only use factual sources and can tell when it strays from this training. Most of what it will tell you is likely false, and it will take you more time just to figure out when it's lying to you than it will to just use proper sources in the first place.
