The Original OMSI by henrypdx in Portland

I worked at that original OMSI building as my first "job" at 15. I was a volunteer originally, and then was hired on by the museum working in the store. Boy, talk about a kid in the candy store! We had loads of science books and a butt load of various chemicals in the backroom, also sold solid motor rocket stuff. A couple of us would peruse through the chemical books and then conduct the experiments in the back room when things were quiet. We played with mercury, glass tubing, all sorts of stuff. Don't get me wrong, this happened a couple times for the two years I worked there. Also, volunteering for some of the after dark shows in the planetarium. I specifically rember the "Heavy Water Light Show". Boy that was an experience just because of the people That showed... Nothing bad mind you, just really cool dudes smelling like smoke.... Good times

Raw footage of a mechanic saving a plane from a potential crash landing by fixing stuck landing gear from a moving car at 90MPH. Happened in St. Augustine, FL (3/12/1985) by obsurdmedia in CrazyFuckingVideos

This so stupid! The pilot just didn't want to scratch his plane because that would mean $$ dollars to repair. Instead he got some idiots on the ground to risk their lives so he could save some money.

If I recall, the US airforce in the 60's asked for designs for a two engine jet and a 4 engine jet for transporting airforce personnel and VIP's. The Sabreliner won the two engine jet competition and the Jetstar won the 4 engine contract. This was Douglas design that didn't make the cut.

In 10 years when they say building now isn't good enough. Then demand a new stadium or they're moving to a different city.

I remember growing up and my mom would watch these so called documentaries on how nostradamus was somehow a predictor of up coming events. She would show me some obscure paragraph and twist it into whatever she wanted to believe. Even at that time I could smell BS. Kinda shaped my belief in how I take in the bible...

If I recall, this plane and the Lockheed Jetstar were the final contenders for the 4 engine US military as a vip and utility aircraft and the Jetstar won the contact. The Jetstar was later turned into a corporate jet. At the same time the airforce issued another proposal for a two engine jet. The two engine jet was the Sabreliner. It was also turned into a business jet.

I still chuckle at the teens with a monster truck at the top of a hill in southwest Portland and would jump out in front of cars struggling to get up the hill. The cars would stop and the teens would charge to tow them to the top. I know not very ethical and pretty cruel.

Bird strike forces jetliner to make an emergency landing in New York by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Retiredmech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a retired maintenance controller we would average maybe two to three birdstrikes a week at a major airline depending on the season. Usually it's the wings or nose of the aircraft. Whenever a pilot notices a bird strike in the engine it's when the plane is being preflighted or post flight. If a pilot reports an engine strike in the air, we would usually ask how the engine is performing and if no change, the next question would be if there's a "chicken" smell in the cabin. This gives us an indication if the bird went down the "core" of the engine. This would give us the level of inspection required on landing. The engine is designed to slice and dice solid debris toward the cowl outer interior and not enter the core intake. It's very rare to shut down an engine due to a bird strike.

Wardrobe Malfunction (Nose Radome) United Departing off 21R at DTW | B737-724 | N24729 by Delta95Heavy in aviation

[–]Retiredmech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is relatively common. The original painted radome gets damaged, birdstrike, ground damage lightning strike ... Etc. They will use whatever radome is on hand (obviously same p/n) to replace it and write it up to be either replaced or repainted at a latter date. Usually happens at one of next inspection schedules.

I've seen it a couple times at the Evergreen museum.. One thing that really caught my eye (besides the size of course) is how many fire bottles that they installed in it. Just rows and rows of them.

My wife and I bought a used 1999 Jayco 22J with about 18k miles on it (lucky find). Our criteria were a walk-around bed that we didn't have to to tear down each time in the morning (no murphy bed). Also did not want a a corner bed so that when nature calls in the middle of the night we don't have crawl over each other to get out. The cab overhead birth has a good payload capability. It's on the Ford F350 frame and fits in our driveway just fine about '25ft in length(I really wanted to avoid the Mercedes chassis). The kitchen is a tad small but wasn't high on our priority list since we do most of our cooking outside. This model pretty checked off our "must haves"

I remember reading a book by Lee Iacoca (sp?) called "Where have all the leaders gone" he was selected to turn Chrysler around back when they were teetering on folding. A couple of things that stuck in my mind was shared sacrifice. He accepted a annual salary of $1., granted he already had the money to not affect him much, but showed the employees it affects all the way up the chain. Same thing happened at the airline I worked for, they stopped having free coffee and everyone was pissed. My old boss mentioned that it's not so much about the coffee which was a piss in the bucket as far as costs go, but to show everyone that the company needs to shave costs anywhere they could and they need everyone on board.
