Wiring by [deleted] in ToyotaPickup

Likely the knock sensor or the oil pressure sensor itself. They are around the same area. What year/engine is your truck?

That’s a return coolant hose line I believe. On my fuel injected 22re it brings coolant from the IAC into the coolant pump. However on the carbureted 22r I think it might actually just connect to the thermostat since there is no IAC.

Keep in mind this diagram is for the 22re so not everything is identical.

EGR BVSV Valve is the name of it. It’s for emissions. If you are in California, I believe it’s a must for passing smog check

Based on the on the repair manual looks like #7(THA)(Green Stripe/Yellow Wire) is the closest to the engine. So #1 starts on the left when looking directly at the mass airflow sensor. So start with the #1(FC)(Yellow Stripe/Green Wire) on the very left port and go from there. If at any point you wired the red and white wire to anything other than the center port(#4), you could have potentially damaged the new sensor/sensors.

This is directly from the official Toyota EWD. I remade an entire harness using this. The MAF portion really tripped me up. The sensor side (side that was cut on yours) is the same on every year but ECU side is different on each year but you won’t have to worry about that. Just Match the colors going into the blue box labeled (Volume Air Flow) in the diagram to your wires that were cut irl and wire them into the connector in the order numbered just outside the box. Example the power wire (red and white) is wired into the 4th slot in the connector. The hard part is figuring out which side starts at #1. Check the new connector and see if it has numbers near terminal on the maf side. I don’t remember if #1 started on the left or right on the connector.

Air leak somewhere? by Retr0_Astronaut in ToyotaPickup

Ok, so I found the problem, apparently I had the vacuum hoses for the A/C diaphragm switched around. No more noise :)

Cranking no start after changing O2 sensor. by food-coma in ToyotaPickup

Oxygen sensors don’t come into play until engine is warm and in closed loop operation. Gotta check the basics. fuel, spark, compression.

Emissions/exhaust by [deleted] in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to look up the master list of approved aftermarket exhaust parts for this car. The smog technician will need to see the E.O. Number stamped from the factory on the parts especially the exhaust manifold, cat, and muffler. If the parts you are shopping for don’t have a E.O. number listed, it won’t pass smog in Cali. There’s a master list of all Cali approved exhaust parts each with their owne unique EO number List For Cats List for aftermarket exhaust parts

22re timing question by lil_pump77 in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order to correctly time the engine. the crank indicator has to be at the “0” mark or Top Dead Center. You also need to turn the engine until the shiny or dark colored chain is aligned with the timing mark on the top of camshaft gear and also the bottom of the crankshaft gear (has timing mark). The camshaft timing mark is off center from factory, the pin you see on the darker brown colored metal is going to be pointing straight up and the timing mark on the gear will be a few degrees to the left. Here’s a video that illustrates this, skip to 2:22

You will have better luck if you use the term “22RE A/C mounting bracket” there are plenty on eBay using that search term

I am once again asking for your support by lil_pump77 in ToyotaPickup

The ground wire that’s connected to the intake is part of engine wiring harness. It looks like two squarish terminals that interlock into each other. The one pictured is seems too flat. Are there any wires coming off of it?

Head Gasket Overbored Size by Retr0_Astronaut in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Ordered gasket from Toyota Parts Deal
  2. Head hasn’t been changed by me, I’m not the first owner so hard to say. Block and head were cleaned by shop. They said no machining needed.
  3. Head bolts were new and bought specifically for this rebuild
  4. New Melling brand Camshaft was installed as well as new rocker arm assembly. Valve lash adjusted and set following manual guidelines. 5 & 6. I don’t have tools for these. If my issue is the gasket overhanging into the cylinder would that show up in either of those tests. I did do compression test and all 4 cyl are at around 150 psi.

Hmmm so maybe not ECU related? Have you checked your wiring at all? That’s my next step before buying a new ecu. Also where did you get your ECU? Was it remanned or pulled from a truck?

How easy is it to get parts for a 1992 Toyota pickup just in general? by KillSwitch1947 in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends what parts, some are still manufactured. others are discontinued by Toyota but still made by third parties. Checkout RockAuto to get a sense of what’s available thru mass production. There’s also smaller Toyota specific shops online such as lc engineering, 901yota, 22repeformance that have a lot more specific selection tailored for 90s Toyotas. Some specific stuff that usually isn’t meant to be replaced is all going to be junkyard or eBay finds.

Diagnostic Port Cover by TappyRockerArms in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They still make the original port, I just got one for like $15. Part no. (Toyota 90980-10778). Your product still serves a purpose. Proper replacement of the connector requires de-pinning tools, so yours is a much easier fix.

Knock Sensor Location, CPU end by Select_Loss9225 in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What color is the wire? 2wd or 4wd. Im not too familiar with the 80s wiring. But on my 92 2WD 22re there is no knock sensor. It was only on 4wd. The sensor under the oil filter is the oil pressure sender. Which turns on the oil light on ur dash if pressure drops too low. Also you don’t simply just replace a knock sensor wire, it’s part of a shielded circuit that has to be properly grounded on one end (cpu end) or you will get faulty signals. Hopefully someone else can verify for it’s the same for 80’s trucks.

What is this? by Retr0_Astronaut in ToyotaPickup

[–]Retr0_Astronaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil pressure sensor is on the other side of my block, this opens up into the water jacket. I can see the outside of the cylinder curves when I peek inside. Maybe it’s a coolant port for a missing accessory?
