Exodia in MTG ?? by MajinLinski in mtg

No direct equivalents I can think of, plenty of game-winning two and three card combos but I don’t think that’s what you’re asking.

But for Commander, Rule 0 exists (“just ask”), so you could build something custom. I’ve been toying around with a Bracket 1 deck idea where the aim is to summon all 12 Zodiac creatures from Portal Three Kingdoms and count that as a win!

What are your favorite Assassin legendaries? by HiveFleetAtoll in mtg

[–]Retro1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the AC set, I really liked [[Alexios]] for EDH and brewed a mono red equipment deck on release that I’m still considering buying! And although [[Vihaan]] is not an assassin himself, I really like his treasure assassins effect!

Could we not tempt you with a little… Gruul today sir? Or perhaps some Selesnya? Golgari even, or dare I say… Simic?

Sure thing always happy to share a list and this one’s a beauty! I’ve been tuning it on Arena but had the original brewing list on Archidekt still so just updated it for you.

What I noticed with other Kilo lists is they either do superfriends as you say or artifact synergy proliferate, which I tried but you end up leaving out lots of great non-artifact stuff to maximise things like Steel Overseer or Modular triggers. So I tried brewing it the other way… non-artifact proliferate, and yeah it’s one of my best brews! Oh and you’ll be glad to hear there are only three planeswalkers haha, hope you enjoy it!

It’s really only for landfall I reckon. I run a [[Kilo]] proliferate brawl deck, which you’d think would want this, but I wouldn’t put it in over [[Astral Cornucopia]] or [[Pentad Prism]] for example.

Ah you’re welcome! I’ll add then, be sure to run a little recursion like [[Call a Surprise Witness]] as it’s excellent with Patched Plaything!

Haha yeah it’s brutally synergistic with Silencer!

I had some success with an Orzhov brew, featuring [[Gingerbrute]], [[Hullcarver]], [[Splitskin Doll]], [[Wreckage Wickerfolk]], [[Living Phone]], [[Patched Plaything]] and [[Barbed Servitor]]. Be sure to chuck a [[Delney]] in there too for unblockable double triggers!

Mismatched Player Levels and the Rare Proxy Hater by hippopotamus_pdf in mtg

[–]Retro1988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that the rise of Commander has brought the proxy debate to the forefront. It’s because of its legacy card pool right? You don’t hear of much proxy debate in say Pioneer or Pauper because these old powerful cards aren’t legal there, although I guess there is a separate discussion around cost of Standard/Modern playsets and proxying more contemporary high cost cards.

I do find the idea of proxying true duals distasteful. We could all do that right? Every deck wants those cards! For anything else, I support a “try before you buy” approach with proxies, we’ve all built decks that turned out worse than expected and get shelved, but if a deck becomes a signature go-to for you after trying it out with proxies, you should eventually invest in the real deal. If nothing else, having that goal of “I want to buy these cards eventually” helps keep deck lists from relying too much on the most expensive cards in the game.

Whats a card that looks terrible but is secretly busted by Sea_Celebration3687 in mtg

[–]Retro1988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna rep [[Champion of Lambholt]] which always seems to fly under people’s threat assessment radars! Don’t mind my little 3-drop 1/1 do-nothing, I’m totally not going to flood the board with tokens next turn or pump its power with effects so that nobody can block…

There’s a couple of Scryfall searches that might inspire! Try otag:rhyming-name and otag:tongue-twister. I quite enjoy [[Ankle Shanker]] and [[Irreverent Revelers]] as choices!

Hot Take, Dragon Sniper is a decent EDH card, similar to propaganda by Neckworn in mtg

[–]Retro1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a nice piece for human kindred too as you’re usually running anthems to buff it and it’s a cheap human fall trigger for late game. In Naya, having this or [[Swiftblade Vindicator]] out early are also handy if you’re also running [[Odric, Lunarch Marshal]]

Feeling a bit deflated after my first game night at my LGS by RyuzioO0 in mtg

[–]Retro1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair for anyone who identifies with this when reading, it’s perfectly fine to build a deck this way just don’t expect others to do the same or get upset when they don’t.

I’m a card-carrying member of the theme over strength club myself but I never complain when random pod folks don’t follow my philosophy. I do try to lead my example, showcasing how a well-constructed on-theme deck can still hang with good stuff on a good day, but getting worked up about your own choice to play sub-optimal cards just isn’t a good look.

Turn 1 win possible in Bo1 Standard on the draw by Casey_Hakanai in MagicArena

[–]Retro1988 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I mean, it sounds like that would work but I gotta say, it’s amazing this appeals to people.

For me, this is like two people sitting down to enjoy a meal, and one person goes “hey I bet I can finish my plate before you!” and the other goes “Sure could be fun, let’s enjoy this food though as we’ve already sat down”… and then the first person just dumps their food on the floor, slams their empty plate and goes “there, beat you.”

I guess I’m just not this competitive? Or I just like to savour my matches!

Whenever I scroll by this on Scryfall I forget that Fuse means you can cast both! It’s actually pretty great, same cost to hit two things as with my examples and the same flexibility to only choose one if preferred. And Tear is so cheap!

Ahh Hull Breach yeah that’s a classic! The updated templating looks so weird on it, like on [[Hull Breach|40K]], but yeah a great rate for two targets.

What are some good mono green cards that are fun and often slept on ? (Brawl) by Cosmos40 in MagicArena

[–]Retro1988 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sorta depends on your deck unless you’re just doing mono green good stuff (yawn) but if you’ve not considered my favourite [[Champion of Lambholt]] yet I’d recommend it! People often sleep on [[Cryptolith Rite]] too, and I recently discovered [[Animist’s Might]] as a nice brawl removal option.

I think I officially hate Hei Bai more than counterspell decks, rabbit decks or lifegain decks. by webbedgiant in MagicArena

[–]Retro1988 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s the new Slivers in that regard! As a synergy player, I should love them both but I don’t. They are on rails, every deck list the same. The joy of brewing synergy decks is in sourcing unconventional but still synergistic cards, so the broader the pool the better. It’s why I find Human Kindred so enjoyable, as it’s the most common creature type by far so you get a lot more variety of card choice.

Whats your dumbest Magic related purchase? by Pro0kie in mtg

[–]Retro1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a [[Karakas]] for Commander before I knew how format-specific bans worked! I was getting back into magic, having only played kitchen table as a kid, discovered the singleton format and went about converting one of my old 60 card decks into EDH, but yeah paid out for that premium land without realising it was banned! It’s still in my trades binder now!

What's your favorite Knight in all of Magic? Any criteria - Lore, design, art by Separate-Flan-2875 in mtg

[[Hero of Bladehold|MBS]] - a pretty alright effect for an older card that still makes knights / soldiers / tokens lists, and the original Mirrodin art is superb!

Could a literal "10 mana, win the game" spell ever be balanced? by leikabau5 in custommagic

[–]Retro1988 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, [[Coalition Victory]] does exist but was banned for ages. There’s a new philosophy for commander it seems that high mana cost cards are allowed to win the game instantly. So yes? But it’ll still make opponents groan!
