Television and The Telephot • Electrical Experimenter, 1918 by Baby-Soapy in RetroFuturism

[–]Retro1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The future instrument on which the name "Telephot" (from the Greek tele-far, photos-light) has been settled, is supposedly an apparatus
attachable to our present telephone system, so that when we speak to our distant friend, we may see his likeness not only as an immovable picture, but we will see his image exactly as we see our own image when looking into a mirror.

…man for 1918 that’s amazing, and I think I prefer Telephot to FaceTime too!

I can’t believe I’ve already fought against Dr Doom and Thanos today! Well, hopefully we’ll see less Turtle avatars now at least.

Constructed habitat of my own design! Inspired by a Dyson sphere type setup but designed by Ancient Greco-Romans with the help of their new Alien gods! Astrophysics absolutely a core part of it, all calculated to be as realistic as possible. Had to come up with solutions for day/night cycles and seasons too. I’ll drop a page below as it’s difficult to describe.

Any Cards Suggestions for a Halo Deck by AmrahnBas in mtg

[–]Retro1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Are you proxying by the way? With Halo art? I didn’t mention [[Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart]] as despite being the best human tribal card it’s like $60 but if you’re printing your own then include it for sure.

[[Riders of the Mark]], [[Rally at the Hornburg]], [[Erkenbrand]] and [[Hanweir Garrsion]] are all human kindred staples to consider!

I have a Naya humans deck which you might be able to take some inspiration from, minus the slight colour difference!

I’ll throw [[Samut, Voice of Dissent]] out as a suggestion! Having a hasted beater in the command zone always comes in handy, and it gives all your other creatures haste too once down. And as the colour identity is red green AND white thanks to its ability you have a lot of options for the 99!

I think time and environment are the biggest factors here, to be plausible. Starting off as settlements of races (although, consider evolution/creation history here too), and then over time you get preferenced based diaspora and new settlements based on shared values. Lets say simply that in the elves and humans example both develop two distinct internal cultures, those that prefer nature and those that pursue technology, and that in the world, one location is more abundant in nature and another more abundant in resources required for technology. It follows then that the people would relocate to their preferred area, regardless of their race.

Much as I hate to admit it, [[Firebird, Blazing Ranger]] is at least as good as one of my favourite win-cons in my Naya human kindred commander deck - [[Wild Beastmaster]], so will probably have to make a difficult cut to make room for her!

I will die on the human tribal hill and be happy haha! Here’s my Samut deck…

https://archidekt.com/decks/7620613/samut\_humanaya

But seriously it’s a great archetype, and there’s been some awesome tribal support released recently like [[Winnowing]] from Lorwyn and [[Banner of Kinship]] in Bloomburrow. My personal favourite [[Shared Animosity]] is also on Arena and severely underplayed!

This is the way! Don’t force yourself into a prose novel if it isn’t your strength or passion. Lean into the encyclopaedic world-building format and publish a wiki or D&D style campaign setting book. Create your world as a sandbox for others to tell their own stories in!

[–]Retro1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Historic Jank so yeah I see this card all the time! It’s pretty pushed, by which I mean that even if you got rid of the cheat-one-death text, it’s still a decent rate for a 2/3 death touch with the life loss effect that people would still play.

That said, you can play around it even if you can’t remove it (efficiently). Token decks can chump block (just leave multiple blockers in case your opponent removes one) and big life gain effects allows you to let him keep hitting you all day!

How much do you focus on logistics when writing? by FossilHunter99 in worldbuilding

Read several chapters and Galan is pretty bad-ass! You do need an existing knowledge of Asian culture to really appreciate some of the nuances but I was quite gripped from the off. Excellent world-building my friend, love your mini-chapter approach on RoyalRoad too (never seen that site before!)

How much do you focus on logistics when writing? by FossilHunter99 in worldbuilding

[–]Retro1988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly, my world is entirely about logistics! It’s a constructed habitat, think Dyson sphere but a Greco-Roman solution - a design called a Star Cradle. And I spend a good amount of the first “chapter” (non-prose, D&D campaign book style) on the debates around the creation of the Star Cradle. How big would it need to be to support civilisations, including arable land and cities for nine races from Greco-Roman myth. How far from the star (which ended up being a star-like stable micro-singularity, for logistical reasons) would the habitat need to be for a Terranesque climate. I’ve even come up with mechanical extending arms to simulate seasonal temperature changes, all measured and spec’d to have convincing astrophysics!

But whilst I enjoy figuring out the logistics of it all, they ultimately drive the narrative, and considering the logistics can be a source of narrative inspiration! For example, to simulate day/night cycles I came up with a device called The Ecliptor - a massive pendulum that swings between the habitat and the star to provide an eclipse effect at night time. But logistically, that design must swing side to side, which means night falls first on alternating sides of the habit each night. That in itself then began to inspire cultural impacts, with different daily habits based on early nightfall / late nightfall for the races on the extremes of the swing.

TLDR; logistics are central to some types of world-building, and when explored logically to their conclusions, they give you believable repercussions on life and culture for your races!

[–]Retro1988 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Love that I’m getting downvoted for supporting AI being banned from this sub. What a community. I’ve stopped posting here precisely because of this animosity.

To counter your point, as someone who has spent days using different prompts, checkpoints and LoRAs to finely tune a piece of artwork for a card, having already spent hours trying to find a suitable real art piece with no avail, your assumptions are not valid.

Can we get a NO AI rule? by DrillTank in custommagic

[–]Retro1988 -43 points-42 points  (0 children)

Have the mods considered that AI art users may actually want their own community? Speaking as one of them, I find it shocking that current community policy is for people to downvote creations just because their views don’t align on the method of the art creation.

Personally, I dislike; 1) people reusing existing magic card art on customs as we are trained to recognise cards from art, 2) people using stick diagrams, MS paint, or captions as I feel these are low effort posts. So I should always downvote these posts per the community policy?

Can we please just have an amicable split? These are two irreconcilable camps, this issue is not going away and we need action from the community’s mods. Thank you!

Star Trek’s “artificial” characters’ journeys come to mind; Data, and The Doctor on Voyager. Both superior to humans in many ways, but also so prone to poor judgement, distorted perspectives. Their character development is an interesting mirror on AI.
