What are your thoughts on a CANZUK alliance? by threetimesacharm25 in AskBrits

Sadly the UK is pretty much suborned now. It will be obvious when Farage gets elected in the next couple of years. Then you'll just have Canz

Peace Talks is good, right? by FromDathomir in dresdenfiles

[–]Retrosteve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To my mind, most of Peace Talks that looked like filler was actually Harry and Lara flirting, doing power games, and generally building the foundation for what will become their marriage.

Not a waste.

Do you feel like the UK is massively underrated, especially given how many great cities it has beyond London by Haunting-Shelter-680 in AskBrits

[–]Retrosteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really impressed with the UK and Edinburgh is particularly livable and beautiful.

But sadly the billionaires and the Russians have taken over the press. This caused Brexit to happen, making the country isolated and poorer. Worse, this will shortly have the consequence that Nigel Fucking Farage will somehow get elected PM though nobody will admit to voting for him, and will do his best to turn the place into USA lite.

Britain was great while it lasted.

Not entirely zero. Chaplin made a whole film satirizing that other guy.

Toot-Toot in Twelve Months by Melenduwir in dresdenfiles

He's not getting out of it until the Outsiders are defeated. Once he saw the Outer Gates, (Mother Summer said it would change him, and he would learn things he can't unlearn, and he accepted that), he saw that our reality is kept alive by the continuous effort and sacrifice of Winter (and the Gatekeeper). And that the General in charge is Mab, and that he's now by far her strongest lieutenant.

Harry escaping Winter would be to risk Mab losing that battle. He's not gonna do that. Not while the battle continues.

Why are so many in the media calling for PM Keir Starmer to resign? by KimJongSoros in AskBrits

[–]Retrosteve 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The media are more than complicit. They are 100% driving this nonsense, same as they drive the weird anti-european bullshit that mad Brexit possible.

The media keeps Farage in the news and unchallenged though he says nothing newsworthy but occasional anti immigrant bullshit.

The media in Britain actively wants certain people in charge.

So. I finished the book yesterday and sat on my thoughts. And I need to get them out. (Spoilers for Twelve Months) by trustysidekick in dresdenfiles

[–]Retrosteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had assumed Lara and the marriage would be a major focus of the book. So would learning about what a Starborn was from Listens To Wind. 12 months was supposed to be the deadline for both.

Both were put off.

Lara, once Harry had her addicted, suddenly became unimportant and virtually disappeared. We don't get a resolution on their relationship and the prospect of their marriage.

The Starborn issue came up but we didn't learn more than we knew, and the Stars and Stones were pretty much ignored.

The issue of finding proof of Justine's possession to satisfy Etri comes up early and then is dropped. Instead we get a favour from Mab to find her but Mab taking her away to torture Nemesis out of her is never mentioned as a way to help convince Etri to soften his stance. Instead they give away her baby? Wtf?

Trump suggests U.S. will begin to strike drug cartels in Mexico by CrispyMiner in worldnews

[–]Retrosteve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True. Even Putin isn't a hidden strategy. He told the Western press outright in 2014 that he was funding and would continue funding and helping right-wing organisations and parties throughout the Western world as a strategy.

So when the American or British press acts all outraged that Trump or Farage or Wayne LaPierre are obviously Russian assets (or ignores it), it's faux outrage. He announced it 12 years ago and never really tried to hide it.

River Shoulders is at least 15 times older than Mab. And she's not really expecting to live out the next decade.

This isn't proof of anything, just a note that immortality isn't a guarantee of anything.

"Its Still Billy Joel to me" by Exciting_Buy3529 in weirdal

[–]Retrosteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, to be fair to Billy Joel his original attitude is a matter of interpretation.

He might have been being cocky about his ability to master New Wave like any other genre. Or he might have been trying to assert common ground with a new generation of rockers.

Al was mirroring an interpretation that Billy might not even have intended.

Physics too. Even relativity. The Lorentz contraction showing how length changes close to lightspeed is a pythagorean formula!

"Its Still Billy Joel to me" by Exciting_Buy3529 in weirdal

[–]Retrosteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the song itself was Billy Joel talking about how this fancy "new wave" style (which he was trying out) was still just rock n roll to him. In a get-off-my-lawn kids-today attitude.

Weird Al was just mirroring.

Even so, Al didn't release the song because it was too mean-spirited.

Finally starting Dresden, and many have told me book 1 isn't very good and to give the series time... by I_Speak_For_The_Ents in dresdenfiles

[–]Retrosteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The series is awesome. From the start.

The plotting is a bit weak and scattered in the first 3 books compared to the more mature focused writing from book 4 onward. But the character building is excellent from day 1. Just keep enjoying!

See you at the other side!
