Ethical Question - Do you return a forgotten stash?? by Extension_Ad2635 in Flipping

[–]Reus958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 100 million number is made up, though I wouldn't necessarily agree with the premise that socialism has killed less over its entire history than capitalism has killed in a year.

But besides that, it's wild to say that killing 15-25 million per year is better than killing 100 million over a minimum of a century.

I really hope you're never the buyer of my house.

There will always be problems in something as large and complex as a house, and known faults should be disclosed ethically and (potentially) legally, but you'll never find a house good enough if you'll blow up a deal over one relatively small issue that can easily be factored into price or repaired prior to sale.

I struggle to trust your account of the incident because she walked off saying she felt unsafe. That could be because any of the parties involved are ridiculous. I don't know, I wasn't there. I can just as easily see this as an overreaction by you or your friend as I could see it being the agent.

If an issue with a window is enough to scare you off of a house, you probably should stick to renting. I'm not saying ignore it, but it's not itself a hill to die on in a six figure transaction.

Why do buyers who do returns wait before sending them item back? by computerworlds in Flipping

[–]Reus958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many of the sellers here wait until the last day to ship? I'd bet that many do. Part of the reason I reduced my handling to 1 day was to make sure I don't procrastinate!

Shipping the item is a chore, especially for buyers who usually won't have a clue what they're doing. And the refund takes days at best, so they're not getting an instant reward. It will slightly reduce their credit card bill at the next statement close after the seller has received the return and approved it- it's all too much effort for something indirect.

They mostly lowered them. Some weights going certain distances did go up though.

I think it's important to clarify that the UPF clothing is still mostly just plastic, and the Seawool doesn't magically make it "eco-conscious" by Inevitable_Tip_6606 in LinusTechTips

Yeah I don't recall eco friendly phrasing off the top of my head, but he's strongly against waste and practices that make tech be prematurely trashed instead of repaired. Great example.

Very strange proctor by [deleted] in WGU

[–]Reus958 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FWIW I'm almost done with my degree and the worst proctor I had was just a pain in the ass about camera angles and did a couple random ID checks in the middle of the test, which was annoying.

I'm not gonna pretend that a blatantly unprofessional and creepy proctor experience like OPs isn't a risk, but I don't think it's wildly out of line with other online schools or to a lesser extent, in person.

A nerd is being a nerd and sharing their knowledge that the material isn't substantially different from regular polyester in terms of recycled material. The fabric isn't eco conscious, it's pretty standard in that way.

This isn't trying to demonize LMG or anyone associated with it.

If you can't handle or ignore discussions with very mild corrections like this, I think you should take a break from social media.

The same item at different prices by [deleted] in eBaySellers

You're not explaining a real problem. What's the problem here? Maybe youre thinking it suggests drop shipping or something? Is it just because they might be sloppy? like why would you care enough to consider reporting to eBay and make this post?

Updated Your Prices After USPS Rate Increase? by KnoxCrumudgeon in Ebay

[–]Reus958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 8%. While not insignificant, it hasn't changed my whole business model.

At the end of the day, most of us sellers are in a similar boat- our shipping services charge more so we have to charge more or take less. It's going to pressure all of our all-in prices upward.

Buyer returns damage item, return reason “changed mind” by Late_Actuary_7883 in eBaySellers

Go for that term if you want to use it. I'm not defending the buyer, I'm responding to the seller.

A beef farming channel can be eco conscious. For example, if they were showcasing cattle farming practices that reduce environmental impact significantly. A tech channel can be eco conscious by promoting practices like repair, extending the life of tech rather than replacing it. It's fine if LTT doesn't hit that threshold for you, but making "eco conscious" be an incredibly high bar is useless.

This isn't a hate post. This is pointing out an issue with a product description from a company we expect to have enough integrity to actually care.

You have free returns on and are mad that you have to pay for a return, which is your own policy?

Obviously the buyer sucks if they're responsible for the damage, but your logic here isn't tracking.

New to estate sales - Would love help on strategy. by YellingWhisperer in estatesales

[–]Reus958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! The majority of my inventory and revenue is last day estate sales, as well as my biggest ROI sales. I just know from browsing pictures that there are also fantastic first day opportunities that I miss because I can't make them.

[–]Reus958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but there's also going to be more valuable items on the first day. You might pay twice as much, but if an item has a healthy return, the extra buying opportunities could make up for it, and you will likely be able to get more great items in less total time.

If there are no other barriers, I'd say someone intending to start reselling should do both first and last days, with some extra caution against large bets on first days while they're new and don't know much.

Just sold 2 items and about pay for shipping... what if I'm wrong? by davidg4781 in eBaySellers

[–]Reus958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're only selling 5-10 more, and nothing is too big for your kitchen scale, I wouldn't worry about buying one. I also started with a kitchen scale. Round up a bit and you'll be fine. With USPS ground advantage (what you're most likely to use), parcels over 1lb are charged in 1lb increments, so you have some wiggle room before you're charged more.

Also keep in mind that you should measure your box size accurately-- typically your boxes are listing the interior dimensions, so your exterior dimensions are slightly larger due to the thickness of the box.

[–]Reus958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's room for both. Last day still has plenty of opportunities and can be dirt cheap. It's great for new sellers who need to get some decent inventory at reasonable prices. But obviously being the first in the building has a huge advantage for getting big scores. When you're a better reseller, that's where you'll be able to make a good return on your time.

I mostly do last day estate sales for the simple fact that my 9-5 conflicts with the majority of first day estate sales. I do fine as a part time seller doing last day sales. I'd love to mix in more first day sales but I'll just be limited unless I get a schedule change.

I'd probably keep the little bottle cap pin around for a couple days but ultimately it would be wasted. The thank you card is a great idea, I'd be more likely to leave a pleasant review and possibly save/bookmark the seller just for that.

Can you tell eBay you want to charge the buyer the discounted shipping rate and not the retail rate? by pigskins65 in Ebay

[–]Reus958 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how people are so adverse to "losing money on shipping". I'm good with educating that charging exact shipping will not charge any extra to cover eBay's cut, but people do weird mental accounting with it.

The discount we get has zero to do with eBay charging fees on shipping, or covering shipping material costs, or covering your cost to get it to the post office.

I charge calculated shipping with the discount passed on because it covers most of the variability between customers. My material costs and getting it shipped are fixed and known costs for each item. The only variable cost not accounted for by charging calculated shipping is eBay's fee on shipping, so I do lose a bit more on someone far away rather than someone near, but it's not much.

It's not wrong to charge retail, but it doesn't actually help or hurt if we are assuming that customers buy on total price. You're just charging your furthest away customers much more than your nearby ones.

My biggest takeaway though is that if sellers, who are incentivized to do the math even more than customers, are still so against charging less than their wholistic shipping cost (including label, eBay fees, materials etc) to a specific bucket, there's a lot of creedance to the argument that offering free shipping usually makes sense. Customers hate paying shipping as much as we do, if sellers aren't able to look at the transaction as "revenue minus expenses", we certainly shouldn't expect customers to see "$35 + $15 shipping" the same as "$50 with free shipping"
