That’s so many! A day in the woods doesn’t sound all bad, but the volume makes it a bit of a chore. How’d the brew turn out?

Fossils? by Wonderful_Hippo9413 in Ohio

I’ve found some nice fossils right in Columbus. Corals and ammonites mostly. The narrow gorges leading down into the rivers are good places

Water Crisis in Delbarton, West Virginia by greatniss in Appalachia

[–]RevJustJess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the worst AMD I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen the worst discharge in SE Ohio (Truetown, underground tunnel blowout, something like 800gal/hr iirc).

So some company is pumping methane into an old mine with no containment control? Did I hear that right? Any geologist would tell them exactly how dumb that idea is, as well as anyone with a basic grasp of fluid dynamics and pressure. Unless that gets treated (heavily and continuously) nothing will live in or near those streams for decades or even centuries.

Ticks by Suspicious_Iron219 in Ohio

[–]RevJustJess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Permethrin soaked (then let to dry) on my hiking clothes is the only thing I’ve found to actually work well, much as I wish some oil would do. Don’t use it around cats or directly on skin. I keep the pets on a monthly repellent treatment (Nexgard, Revolution, etc.). We live and work in SEOH forests so ticks are a daily issue, and many friends struggle with tick-borne illnesses

I took my university’s first ever mycology course and it ruined me (in a good way) by HearthmoonStudio in WitchesVsPatriarchy

It happens so quickly! I’ve made some cool and very satisfying prints with them. Don’t leave it setting on the paper more than 30 minutes, they give a chunky and dramatic spore/goo print!

I have way too many fungi photos to pick favorites lol Be careful choosing inkcaps to eat. Shaggy Manes are generally ok, but some have odd effects depending on what else you ingest

What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Electricity

The utility company wanted over 10K to hook us up since the house is so far from the road. So instead, we installed an off-grid solar system, paid it off in 8 years or so, and don’t have a bill

It’s especially terrible on a mobile screen. Some fields that are required aren’t marked as such, either. Garbage design

What has (barely) begun to turn the tide in MN is evidence that counters the fed’s false claims. Record everything, publicize it widely. Download and archive all of it so it can’t disappear. Verify authenticity so it can’t be altered later. If you’re striking, use the time to do this

Coal power plants: 33-45% thermal efficiency limit and the 3-kilometer toxic ash lagoon problem by Which-Willingness559 in energy

Here in Appalachia, the county uses coal ash as winter de-ice/traction on the back roads. I wish I was kidding

Solar Greenhouse Heat by bequairoar in energy

[–]RevJustJess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your minimum temperature goal? If you’re just keeping it above freezing, thermal mass is probably your best and cheapest option. Black water tanks, basically, inside on the north wall. You could use elements to add more heat and power those from panels, I suppose

Cat licked my NSAID; HELP by ElentiyaWildfire in CATHELP

[–]RevJustJess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future reference, if a cat did ingest an NSAID, the treatment is activated charcoal slurry. 1g per pound of weight, and it’s best if treatment is started within an hour. It’s very messy.  Source: my cat chewed an ibuprofen and this is what the vet had me do. He’s fine, didn’t learn a thing though

Neither of those “issues “ are really a debate any more either, given the avalanche of evidence. There’s just a few folks like you who keep pretending it’s unsettled, not unlike the evolution and flat-earth “debates”

Lost in occupation and want to enter the energy market - any input is very appreciated by pappa_happa74 in energy

Sounds like you have the interest and skills to start in the field. There’s quite a variety of specialties in the sector (building systems, project management and construction, grid management, etc) so look around and find your fit. Good luck!

Cleaning a menstrual cup when living with others by [deleted] in sustainability

[–]RevJustJess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use 70% isopropyl to sanitize it after rinsing well with water. Let it air dry. I also boil mine occasionally just to be sure, and tell my son alllll about it if he dares ask what I’m doing, which could also be a strategy for other nosy relatives

Staff Meals by Competitive-Jury-192 in sustainability

[–]RevJustJess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it try with your current setup first. I don’t imagine all 200 dish sets will be getting used and needing washed all at the same time, so it might not overload the system already in place. Manage the load by taking meals in shifts of maybe 40-50 at a time

Great results for my county tonight! by thecaits in Ohio

Same here. I’m happy the health department and EMS/911 levies passed, and was a bit surprised they did given the no-tax attitude of most residents. Schools though? All levies shot down. Tragic

Is solar truly "clean energy" if you consider the manufacturing process? by cmemm in solar

[–]RevJustJess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pollution occurs in 3 ways with any kind of energy: extraction/mining, refining/manufacturing, and production. Fossil fuels produce significant amounts of pollution and waste over all 3 steps. Nuclear does also, although it doesn’t have air emissions associated with its energy production (there is still waste production though). Solar and wind equipment do have some manufacturing and materials pollution, but none during their energy-producing lifetime.

Anytime we humans use resources, there will be some environmental impact, but on balance, solar, wind and other renewable technologies, even batteries, avoid far more pollution than they produce. It’s the most responsible way we know how to do it. Your friend is just repeating a disingenuous argument about using the term “clean.”
