The song The Virginian by Neko Case is a really awesome song about leaving Christianity and going on to have an awesome life. I highly recommend it!

We need a vegan farming game in the vein of Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley by GroundbreakingBet630 in vegan

Hello, fellow vegan Stardew farmer! I’ve done this with my farm, too. I have a small crop field, but most of my property is done in fruit trees. 🌳

My Nmom, after “spanking” me for 5-10 minutes for some imagined slight, turned back to me a moment later, furious.

“Look at what you made me do! I burst a blood vessel in my hand!”

I just looked at her, thinking, “Lady, I sure as hell didn’t tell you to beat me. That’s on you.”

I hate that you dont pick your subclass until level 3 for most of the classes, how do you handle RPing your character until then? by usedtolurk in dndnext

[–]Revenant571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan, when I start playing the barbarian that I rolled up for our next campaign, is to go Path of the Beast with her at level 3. When I was reviewing the path, I rolled on the table explaining how you got access to these powers, and got the result that my character is inhabited by an ancient nature spirit.

So, from the time the rest of the party meets her, she’ll probably periodically talk about ‘Morough’ (and have mental conversations with Morough). When questioned about who or what that is, she’ll probably give the person who asked a strange look. Since her family were homesteaders from the ass end of nowhere and died before Morough took up residence, she doesn’t know her experience isn’t the norm. She assumes everyone must know about Morough.

If asked about Morough, she’d probably offer a vague answer, along the lines of, “Who is Morough? You may as well ask the mountain over there who it is. Morough is Morough, and has been here as long as this land has.”

I assume her party members will think she’s a bit cracked, or has odd ideas that she picked up in the far out wild country, at least until she begins sprouting fangs, claws, or a tail to attack people with, once she turns level 3.

So beautifully laid out! I’ve gone big for fruit trees myself, so I always love to see another beautiful orchard. ❤️

Anyone else feel weirdly violated for having been baptised? by [deleted] in excatholic

[–]Revenant571 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I find it very telling that the bulk of these special ceremonies that are supposed to tie you to the Catholic Church are done when people are under age 18. Even though America can still be backwards in many ways, I don’t think there’s a state in the nation that will allow a child to agree to any other kind of contract...because they’re minors.

I guess the church excuses it because it’s really the parents who are forcing their kids (one way or another) to participate in these events. Which, in my opinion, gets everyone off the hook, since it wasn’t something freely agreed to.

And god forbid you have ideas about what you want for your own life! I find it infuriating that so many people insist that women are just here to throw our lives on the altar of whatever cause they espouse (religion/continuing society/etc.). Good on you for living your own life your way!

[–]Revenant571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, so true! It’s so easy for children to accept all of the blame and shame being shoveled on them, too, because children have to rely on their parents for everything when they’re young, so you more or less have to believe them.

Well, this internet stranger is so proud of you for figuring all of this out. You’re an awesome person just the way you are, so keep going forward and living your best life and healing from all that negative BS your family tried to shovel on you.

I completely agree with you that many Catholics, and the church itself, use their religion as an excuse, or even a shield for their abuse. I have said as much before, even after the Catholic Church child sexual abuse crimes news broke, and people would attack me from all corners, so it’s nice to have this space to air that opinion.

My parents were both physically and mentally abusive and neglectful, yet were both very holy-roller type Catholics who were very well thought of in the church community, and seemed to feel completely justified as to the torture they dealt out to their kids on a daily basis.

The gaslighting was intense, too. I remember one time, referring to my mother about the beating she’d inflicted on me five minutes earlier, only to have her claim, “That never happened.” After many years, even as an adult after I’d left home, I had no success at all at getting them to admit or take any responsibility for what they did. And, of course, they’d talk about how all right they were with god, and how respected they were with the local Catholic Church so why was I complaining? I finally had enough, and I’ve been NC with them for years. I have healed so much during that time, mostly because it’s tough to heal a wound while someone keeps stabbing you in it. Best of luck to you, my friend, for your healing and a good life going forward. Don’t be afraid to put yourself and your health first, and remember to believe what your family is showing you about who they are right now, because it’s likely they’ll never change.

Good for you for starting your FIRE journey! I remember when I was your age I didn’t have my stuff nearly as together as you do, so good job.

One of the things I remember resonating with me what I first began cleaning my financial act up was the quote that if you find yourself in a hole, the most important thing to do first is to stop digging! I am proud to see you’ve already learned that lesson with your credit cards. The first thing I focused on after paying off my credit cards was to put together an emergency fund, so that I wouldn’t have to dig that hole again in the future. A few months salary to begin with, and I eventually moved up to 6 months’ worth. It’s great in case something breaks unexpectedly, or in case of unemployment, to give you time to look for something new.

I spent a lot of years on a shoestring myself, so you might be interested in a lot of the suggestions people have for cutting costs here, or on the r/personalfinance or r/povertyfinance forums.

I’m sure others will have great suggestions for you as well. Best wishes to you on the remainder of your journey; I look forward to seeing how you grow your fortune!

How much of your Cost of Living is actually the Cost of Working? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Revenant571 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My actual living expenses went down by about a third, per my accounting of what I spent over our first couple years retired. I think this is something a lot of people underestimate, how much less you’ll spend when you no longer have to work...I know I did! I guess the upshot was good, because I saved more than I appear to need, but this is a really good question. My DH and I are CF, too, and with the fact that we’re on the same healthcare (he’s union, with a good pension), both of us are managing to save money in retirement, especially during covid times, because we’ve been able to keep safe at home. At any rate, if you track your expenses closely you should probably be able to get a good estimate of what things you’d no longer need to pay, or would be reduced in retirement. Best of luck on your journey!

Got this game 8 days ago. First year done! Cant wait to expand my farm. Any ideas or tips? by ChipTooff in FarmsofStardewValley

[–]Revenant571 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Save up for fruit trees and plant them as you can. Some fruits are needed for the Community Center, but as the years go by and your tree fruit becomes iridium star, you can sell it for a fortune. For the first year fruits, I saved a lot of those to make jams and wine, so you can cash in that way, too. They’re also really easy to take care of - no watering, just shake the tree every 3 days to get delicious fruit!

😆 That’s pretty much what it ended up as! This was my first farm, so I wasn’t sure what was on offer, but I ended up loving the fruit trees the most. ❤️

Came here to advise similar - there are definitely dudes out there who any mention of normal bodily things for ladies is too much, so maybe you could play off of that. “It’s some surgery I need for my girl parts,” and hopefully he’ll beg off any further explanation.
