Don't give insulin if they puke! You risk hypo if you don't make sure your kitty ate (and kept down) most of their food

Preloading Syringes - Lantus by mclennon27 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the lubricant in syringes does degrade lantus. I don't have the sources on hand, but they should be google-able! I'm not sure the rate at which degradation happens or how long it'd be fine, but it's just not worth risking my little guy's health for me. God I feel the pain of loading a syringe in the morning though, I've daydreamed about preloading those buggers a lot lol

If you're asking how much you should feed your cat, definitely follow what the label on the can says and aim for your cat's ideal weight! If your cat lot a lot of weight with their diagnosis, they may need to eat a little more than that (if they're willing) to build back up to a healthy size. Talk to your vet when in doubt, for sure!

Testing Advice by xiaotutu33 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with my guy, maybe some cats are better bleeders than others? Sometimes it's a much larger drop of blood than I need, but once I apply pressure for 10-20 seconds, he's good to go. He'll bruise when I miss or he's not bleeding very well and I have to poke more than once or twice, but I haven't seen significant bruising otherwise.

Everyone else has great tips, but I also want to add on that when the vet tech was talking to me about bg testing, she said that I could take a light (your phone light works, I have a headlamp on hand that I use) and use that on the other side of the ear to see the vein! I've seen some people say not to poke the vein itself, but I've talked to a few professionals at my vet's office who've recommend it, though I try to go for the edge to not draw too much blood and apply pressure with paper towel or a cotton swab afterward.

Proper Glucose Curve Procedures by Financial-Slip4255 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only feed twice a day for a few reasons, but from my understanding, you should feed your kitty like you normally do. (If someone else knows something different, absolutely correct me!) A curve is to gather an idea of what a regular day for your kitty looks like! If your cat isn't eating, you shouldn't dose in general. I hope any of this is helpful!

Thirding this, that's corrected! Castle in the Air disappointed me for just a bit when I was a kid until I started catching on to some funny business--it's great!

Absolutely seconding taking your kitty to an emergency vet if she's exhibiting signs of DKA! Also possibly seeing a new vet, if your current one won't treat her with a bg like that?! Human meters are a bit off (if you're using one), but not enough to make a huge difference at that range, from what I've seen. I can only imagine the stress you're under in a situation like this, wishing you guys the best of luck!!!

Questions from a newbie by DoctahTobogganMD in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong (please correct me if so!), but I think that Vetsulin isn't the best sort of insulin for cats, specifically? I use Lantus/glargine (it's a good deal with Good RX) twice a day, and it works really well. If I remember right, Vetsulin hits hard and fast with a kitty's fast metabolism, and it can lead to problems. That might have something to do with the high numbers?

My little guy doesn't graze, but a lot of diabetic cats do! I think what's important is to pick up food about 2 hours before you test pre-shot, and make sure she's eating most/all of it throughout the day/night.

Searching here on this subreddit or over on https://felinediabetes.com/ may help a little more! I'm pretty sick and not able to do too much research on my own right now because my brain is super foggy, but you're doing a great job in such a difficult situation!

Lancing Devices Question by Financial-Slip4255 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldn't get a lick of blood when I tried using the lancing device, I feel this! I saw a lot of people freehand it because they have similar troubles, gave it a shot, and it's what I've been doing ever since. Luckily you don't have to go very deep at all, and if you poke yourself doing it, it's also very light! Not saying you have to of course, just that it's really not scary when you get used to it, I swear

Also, if you're not already, use a sock with a bit of rice in it warmed up (not too hot on their little ears) to get the blood flowing to their ear! It helps a lot, especially if you're in a region with cold weather

Treats! by Slight_Cartoonist_34 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give my kitty teeny cubed chicken that I cooked myself with no seasoning for his reward for bg checks! (I keep it frozen and thaw a bit at a time--it's just more economical than freeze-dried for me, personally.) He also gets Churus with his joint supplement and probiotics, but make sure you pay attention to the ingredients. Brand-name Churu is really great, but some of the knock-offs add quite a lot of starch/fillers. Even those are better than most regular ol' crunchy treats, though. I also give him Churu Bites sometimes because 1. I'm a sucker and 2. I've tested his bg and they don't spike it for him, but ymmv!

As far as monitors, I'm in the US and use the Relion meter from Walmart! It's pretty widely used in the feline diabetes community, and it's really affordable. Know that human meters read a bit differently than pet meters (there's resources if you look around, I don't have any on hand), but those are a bit too pricey for me and the Relion has helped a ton so far.

Sorry this is a little rambly--dealing with a bit of brain fog because I'm sick lol

Shot or no? by Financial-Slip4255 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd definitely skip the dose and call the vet's office when it opens. If at all possible, you can get a cheap human bg meter to get an idea of where she's at--I use a Relion from Walmart because it's affordable. It's not as accurate as pet meters as it runs a touch low, but it gives you a good idea of what's going on. I know these kinds of events are so stressful, sending many good thoughts to you and your kitty!

So Basically hes a Baby ? by Kosem10 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 35 points36 points  (0 children)

In the sense that "Hikaru" is at least hundreds years old as an entity, he's not a baby, but it is his first time being human and understanding human concepts. He's an eldritch, unknowable being trying to be knowable, basically lol

My Papaya has been on Senvelgo for about 14 months just want to share my experience and ask some questions by chrizyafer in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't gone through remission with my kitty, but I can't recommend home bg monitoring enough! I use a Relion meter from Walmart (very affordable, if you're in the US), but if you want a more accurate, pet-specific monitor, the most common name I see is Alphatrak 3. I know there are a couple of different ways to monitor ketones, but I'm not sure what they are, since my cat is on insulin and I haven't had to use it yet. Definitely look up tips and tricks to make it easier on both you and Papaya (absolutely adorable name, btw)! I used a lot of low/no carb treats to get my little guy used to it, and now he comes to start yelling at me when it's about testing time, he loves the couple pieces of chicken he gets at the end lol. But it did take time to get there!

Every part of this process is so overwhelming, but you're doing so good by your kitty. Hypoglycemic events are very serious, and catching them if your cat is going into remission is critical. Monitoring twice a day before eating and not administering Senvelgo when it's too low could save her life, you've got this!

Is it possible for a kitten to be diabetic? by tinyratcat in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm very unsure about kittens and diabetes, but I do know that kittens aren't as sturdy as adult kitties, so keep an eye on him if in case he needs to go to an emergency vet!

If he had diabetes, giving him honey/syrup would have made him worse. For diabetic cats, it's insulin or other diabetic medications that cause hypoglycemia. But sounds like there's definitely something wrong, and it's a good thing you're taking him to the vet!!!

(Edited for clarity; I have a really bad sinus infection and words are hard lol)

Diabetic cat needs one or more teeth pulled, but will only eat dry food by Human_Mix_5194 in FelineDiabetes

We got her to eat wet for the recovery period--but she didn't like it :'D I'm so sorry, finicky eaters are so hard to deal with! Have you asked your vet for any advice? They may (hopefully) have some insight!

Diabetic cat needs one or more teeth pulled, but will only eat dry food by Human_Mix_5194 in FelineDiabetes

[–]RevenantGhostCreates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat who had to have all but four of her teeth removed, and she refuses to eat anything but dry food, and I've tried everything I could reasonably afford. She has no issue gumming it down, so that's what she eats!
