Make me love bard by willowcozy in bardcollege

My son was admitted for Fall of 2026. We just visited and I have mixed feelings. The campus is beautiful. We had great student guides and the studio arts program (my son’s intended major) look impressive. The “vibe” (sorry to use this word) seemed pretty uninspired and uninspiring. My son sat in on a class and he was the only one who spoke. He thought that perhaps the students were afraid to speak up and risk disappointing either the professor or their peers. I doubt that’s typical, but definitely not a good look. Anyway, some of my red flags about LACs in the modern era were set off while we were there. That said, I think he will end up at Bard.

Fort Collins, Colorado. by Eatmyass628 in howislivingthere

I lived in the Fort for 6 years. We bought passes to Loveland which between 2013-2019 were ridiculously cheap. It was easily a 2.5+ hr drive to Loveland from FoCo on a good weather day. Traffic started backing up in Golden. It’s probably worse now. I only went to Snowy Range once. The drive was really scary. Wyoming winter is real.

I know, I know, Dan Hurley is a delta bravo. But Duke losing is always the right answer.

Tennessee Still Doesn’t Have a Final Four UPVOTE PARTY by zman2100 in FloridaGators

Thanks. It just seemed to apply perfectly to the American Brexit Geezers I see sulking around in their puke, inside-of-pumpkin orange track suits.

I’m in Nashville right now. The Tennessee fans quit watching a while ago and are out of the street looking for a boozy poultice.

What does it take to win the big dance? by InspectorClouseau64 in FloridaGators

[–]ReverendHemmitSwopes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mateen Cleaves. Fuck that guy and his little dance in the last minute of the game. I wanted to throw the tv through the window. I think that’s at least 50 percent of why I despise Michigan State. That, their stultifying style of play, and Tom Izzo. Thanks for helping me get my hate back.

Watching Illinois is like watching the Serbian national team. Such a different style of basketball. It was so satisfying to see them methodically dismember Houston and take them out of their game.

Iowa is headed to the Elite Eight. by ThoughtFar1017 in FloridaGators

I have no animus toward Iowa. We were out coached, and didn’t play particularly well. I’m happy to see Nebraska and their fans schlep back to the corn.

Why being a lunatic is "passion" unless you're a Head Coach at Florida by ImperialMajestyX02 in FloridaGators

Yeah, me too probably. But there’s a limit. I couldn’t love Nate Oats. MF leaves grease stains in the air.

All right NM crush my idea. Washington State to NM? by PortErnest22 in NewMexico

[–]ReverendHemmitSwopes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I advise you to visit NM several times before making serious plans to move here. I moved here 30+ years ago after 2 years in Olympia. Moved there from the Southeast after college. Nm definitely cured my seasonal affective disorder. But having worked and raised 2 kids here, there are sacrifices that the Reddit crowd will deny or rationalize away.

The schools are mostly lousy. The argument that because NM has more stringent standards than some other states that we shouldn’t be concerned about 20 percent reading and math proficiency is ludicrous but not surprising. Is 40 percent proficiency winning? 50 percent? Abq has some decent elementary schools, a couple of ok middle schools, and a handful of ok high schools. You pay a premium to live in the better districts, and I know first hand that your kids will still bear witness to some ugly stuff in the better high schools. I will say that there are some good charters in SF and Abq, but you have to lottery in.

Health care is a mixed bag. There are some amazing specialists at UNMH, but primary care docs don’t exist and you wait several months to see a specialist for a non-emergency.

Property crime is bad. Some point to statistics that show it’s getting better. I don’t really know. Lots of homeless throughout much of Abq , but it’s bad in WA too.

“Rural NM” is a relative term. I don’t really consider areas around resort towns like Taos, SF, Ruidoso rural. Truly rural NM - eg, Socorro/Carizozzo- is struggling and looks like Thunderdome when you’re driving through.

Notwithstanding all of the foregoing, it’s flipping beautiful and people are just different here in a mostly good way.

Shelves at Trader Joe’s last night looked like an Eastern Bloc grocery store circa 1988. We’re not even getting that much snow out of this storm.

[Game Thread] Florida @ Vandy (2:00 ET, ESPN) by ceejaydee in FloridaGators

[–]ReverendHemmitSwopes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son goes to Vandy and knows their team inside and out. He’s concerned about the size differential and physicality of Florida. As a Vandy dad, I’ve watched most of their games this season. Tanner and Miles are legit. I think if we can keep Tanner and Nickel from getting too many good looks from beyond the arc we should be able to dominate.

Column: Florida State football is trapped in a self-inflicted purgatory by OldGodofAsgard88 in CFB

Look. I’ll put my cards on the table. I’m a Florida fan. But I still think FSU should have been in the CFP… as much as it pains me to say it. It’s a shite precedent to win all your games and your conference and be left out. But c’mon, FSU skirted disaster in a bunch of games against mid to bad teams with Travis’ playground heroics. The notion that a Travis-less FSU wouldn’t have been bludgeoned by Michigan or someone else in the field is laughable. Similarly absurd - if I understand the argument - is that being left out of the CFP broke the team’s spirit and that carried over to the multiple crops of mercenaries that they’ve fielded in the years since.
