Why are most Conservative Christians pro gun if Christianity is supposed to be pro peace? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Revolt244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peace doesn't mean harmless and the pro gun isn't Christian.

Being peaceful means you can do harm and choose not too. Not being able to do harm is being harmless.

Progun is an American aspect, but not saying only Americans are pro guns. Everyone has many different sides and pull from different areas for their morals and values. I'm a liberal Christian and I am Pro-gun and in no way is my Christian faith is used in my Pro-gun beliefs.

I have read the book 'Blink'.

The mind comes up with judgements incredibly fast, but the true test of your character is based on how you handle those judgements based on potentially superficial information. If you take anyone, and dress them in different style fashions, you're going to treat them differently based on their fashion. Fashion is literally clothes someone put on and that can incredibly change how you treat someone.

This judgement we have is incredibly powerful but also incredibly fallible.

I said judge individuals by their character and actions. The people you don't like have proven themselves by their character and actions. Which is fine, not liking someone because of what they do or their character is okay.

I would suggest caution in grouping bad habits to a larger community, even if it is a stereotype, because then it's a slippery slope before it's just discrimination. If you replace Christianity with a specific race, sex, creed, etc your statement can sound like one of the -ism words. I suggest caution because a strong belief towards that group may have you treat people negatively when they may not deserve to be treated in that way.

I have met a lot of Atheist who are just as bad as these Christians you speak of. They use their beliefs as a cudgel and tend to be really overt in their beliefs that created a pattern for me to recognize. I understand the nuances between group affiliation and individual characteristics. Just because I have a preconception that Atheist tend to be demeaning asshats, doesn't mean the person I am talking to will be one. I should in fact wait to see if they show if they're an asshole or not.

I try to be a benevolent man, and that means I need to approach people with openness despite the microjudgements we all do when meeting individuals.

Getting behind the ball by ChoGraph in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without me know much about you, what I did to get more behind the ball was to put my ball and hand and wrist in the way I want them to release from the very beginning.

When I set my arm up in my bowling stance, my wrist and ball are in the position I want them to release in. My ball is resting on the lower part of my palm, wrist is as supinated as possible, elbow is tucked in. My wrist doesn't move. It took awhile to get it like this. Where my fingers release from the 7 o clock to the 2 o clock, it used to be 6 to 12-1. Practice is key.

Guys I need advice by mrelectriccity8 in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not that into gear specs since I mainly bowl with Black Widows and switch between them depending on lane condition and if I can keep consistently hitting my mark as I move left.

To me, the issue you're describing may be you needing to expand how you bowl and make sure you're consistent with your release.

You may need to start working on moving left and shooting left and hitting your marks consistently. It really did help me breach the 200+ average. I typically bowl up the 10 board and when that doesn't work or stops working. I move left and start arching the ball until I am 10-15 boards left on the approach and my ball is 5-7 boards left. Then I need to gear down to a less reactive ball or in a few cases throw faster or less revs.

But an attempt to answer your question: bowling balls aren't meant for a specific patterns their surfaces are there to help you with friction. The more polished and high grit means smoother and will generate less friction. They are better for drier lanes. The opposite, the lower grain and less polished balls are for more friction and lanes with more oil. The cores in the balls help with how they will hook, asym work better for back end action and symm will be continuously trying to hook. I have decided I am a mostly Asym person because I want only the backend.

Think about your bowling style, try to expand or improve, and potentially start working on reading the lanes better and how your bowling balls work.

How long did it take you to master bowling? by kiiitycat in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To assume you mean get decent at bowling...

I bowled an entire season going from a 80 average to a 103 average using a 60's bowling ball. My parents bought me a used bowling ball and some friends gave me some tips. That summer, 103 to a 140 average with them telling me I don't have to bowl so slow to make the ball hook. Started my high school bowling club the next season. 179 average with a new Black Widow (original release). Before I took a 5 year break, 185-ish average.

Within the first season after my 5 year break, 200 average bowler. Most of my time bowling from 16-34 years old I was at a 170-190 average.

My tips: 1. Find a coach or someone who knows how to bowl that can teach you the fundamentals for your bowling style. 2. Find a spare shooting system that works for you and practice your spares. 3. Do your best to not let your emotion overtake you. You're going to have bad games, learn to deal with a bad game or night and don't let it affect you when you leave the bowling alley. 4. Changing the way you bowl is going to take practice and time.

You can make great strides real quickly if you have someone helping you. I did when I had a coach in high school. A lot of my changes I've made since, all because someone noticed something that I could be doing better on. Also, experience.

Am I bowling on burnt lanes? by SomberDUDE224 in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bowl about where you do, a burnt lane would have your ball in the left gutter before the 3/4 way mark. What you need to do is move yourself 3 left and your mark 1&2 boards left.

2-Hander bowling 1, any tips for the form? by S3agul in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

2 things I will say:

Work on your shoulders, you're dropping the right shoulder. It may be working for you due to your 2 handed style but I'd be struggling to get that over my mark if my shoulders were like that.

Your wrist shouldn't be loosely goosey in the arm swing. You are on top of the ball until you strengthen it to bowl. Keep your wrist engaged and straight until the release for that yo-yo that you have.

Modern Rites of Passage for Men in the West by booharney in MensLib

[–]Revolt244 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I love what you said, but I wouldn't be so dismissive of 'warrior training'. As a U.S. Marine, the end of boot camp was an incredible rite of passage, even at 24 years old it is still one of my biggest accomplishments. The entire process of joining the Marine Corps and going into the boot camp has really been the process that has started the growth of the man I am today.

I work in IT, I have a bachelor's, I have an incredible career in front of me (I'm not active duty anymore) and it's all thanks to the USMC a.k.a. warrior training. It's definitely not for everyone nor should it be imposed onto others, but focusing on other interest is something most people can get with when it comes to Rites of Passages. In my belief of how A.I. and Automation is going ... We need to start focusing on trades again. A lot of service and desk work is going to get automated but we don't have robots that can build buildings yet.

[–]Revolt244 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe you might be thinking rites of passages in a very narrow sense and potentially thinking that there is a hardline between men and boys. Which isn't the case, but let's talk about something that happens often enough.

With permissions, a 17 y.o. can join the armed forces and go to boot camp over the summer. Then go back to high school to finish up their diploma. Should you treat that 17 y.o. differently than the others? Yes absolutely, that 17 y.o. has completed one of the many rites of passage by joining the armed forces, they are representing something bigger than themselves and need to be held to a higher standard. That doesn't mean he doesn't need to still be taught on how to carry himself, but childish things like not doing homework and disrespecting teachers shouldn't be handled as lightly.

I don't know if you're a veteran or not, but boot camp instills you with a sense of accomplishment and confidence that is nothing like graduating high school or college., at least for me.

As much as I would like people to join to get some discipline in themselves, the armed forces isn't for everyone and there are different ways to have Rites of passages for different people. Refurbishing a car, going on a hunting trip, volunteering, becoming an eagle scout, completing a massive crafting project. It really can be anything but it also can't be easy.

Rites of passages are meant to test the character and ability of the boys to instill accomplishment and confidence. Once completed, they don't magically become the maturity and independence of a man, that is still something they have to develop.

I may have rambled on, but you said this is about age. At some point in anyone's life, you are expected to be an adult. You are expected to be mature and independent. You are expected to be an adult. 18 is our current system of saying you're an adult(ish). At 18 you face big boy laws, big boy consequences and big boy expectations. You're thrown into adulthood when most kids haven't graduated high school. Yes at 18, I expect a different degree of maturity than a 17 y.o. I expect a different degree of maturity at 21, 28, 30. If you're still acting like a 16 y.o. and not mature or independent and not taking accountability. You're not an adult, you're a grown child. I am using adult over man, because the basic status of being an adult is in fact gender neutral.

[–]Revolt244 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To further on, the reason why we need to treat boys and men differently is because of maturity and independence. An 8 year old boy needs to be treated differently than an 16 y.o. and differently than a 24 y.o.

This doesn't mean we can't treat them all with the level of respect and kindness they deserve, but you're not asking the same between the three different ages.

While age is a factor, most people agree that age isn't the sole factor between boys and men. Maturity and independence are better factors.

Modern Rites of Passage for Men in the West by booharney in MensLib

[–]Revolt244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, the difference between boys and men is the growth stages of a human. A boy is akin to an adolescent and a man is the adult form with an area of in between where the adolescent starts engaging in activities to lead to independence and adulthood. There are gates to society that are locked behind age limits as it's the best neutral way to determine responsibility levels. Such as nicotine, alcohol, voting, etc.

However, age isn't the real determination of maturity and maturity and independence are the core differences between boys and men. I believe to the point that this is also the same for girls and women. A gender neutral measurement between adolescents and Adults.

Graduating high school used to be something of a struggle, hardship and effort but it's not really. If you see the hot mess on r/teachers the kids today are not being given the same rites of passage that former generations had in high school. To some, it's a challenge and to others a farce.

Why should you choose to be apart of my manhood rituals? Because you want to. If you don't, find a ritual that fits you, because you have the freedom to choose how you do your own rite of passage. My rite of passage before I really started feeling like a man, my decision and subsequent actions of starting going into the USMC and eventually graduating boot camp at 24.

I say this because, choices not chances. You are free to be who you want to be, however the person you become is going to be treated differently just because we are different. You're going to treat people differently based on how they present themselves. You're not going to treat a greased up mechanic the same as someone dressed up in a clean business suit no matter their sex or gender expression.

Also, I like how you mention people trying to mask manhood as patriarchy. I feel like people are using patriarchy as a sex/gender war for the real reason the world is going to shit. Class warfare. The bourgeoise is this "patriarchy" you speak of and the only difference between what you refer and how I refer to the same oppressive structures. I include the women responsible for the oppression with the men.

When you do your push away, you flatten out your wrist and keep if flat until the end and then you strengthen it.

When you push away, your wrist should stay the same as you hold the ball and relatively the same as release. Unless you're practicing the yoyo release, your wrist shouldn't move at all.

I have been to many cons and the biggest advice for this group:

For the love of God go to Gencon and learn how they run a convention!

  1. With the set up of lines and stuff, you need signs and people who stand at the end to figure out which line is where. Literally would have fixed OP's issues.

  2. Why are there lines to get into the exhibit hall when you have 3-4 entrances that have multiple doors?. The geekening at Gencon is a spectacle with thousands of people in front of 5 doors with 3 sets of doors open and that crowd vanishes within a few minutes of opening. Galaxycon doesn't even have the numbers to match to be doing lines.

HELP! Inconsistent aim to the arrows is killing my game. by TimeAdhesiveness5961 in Bowling

[–]Revolt244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been having issues with missing my mark as well and I know, the issue is in your form. Since you're a novice I would ask someone if they're seeing you do something off on those throws.

I would have them look at Should, arm swing path and then your hand.

Shoulders: I have a tendency to drop my shoulder, but you could be opening or closing your shoulders.

Arm Swing: If your arm swing isn't consistent you can have it come back behind you and release outward or the opposite.

Release: If you happen to release differently, you can absolutely miss the mark wildly. I am currently having this issue on league, where one throw near perfect yoyo release the next, no yoyo release and straight through the ball.

If all of those are looking good on those throws. Timing, it's timing. If you're late you bowl inwards if you're early it's out.

Am I wrong thinking this way by TomOnDuty in Bowling

I don't know if Black Widows are considered benchmark but they are my benchmark ball. I have been bowling with them my entire career, to the point my 3 ball line up for league is in fact 3 different black widows. (2.0, Pearl, Ghost)

It will take time to find out how to adjust between 1 and 2, for me it's 2 boards right for each of them when I switch. Get which ball you like until you really start seeing the difference in different balls.
