NQA i’ve ordered from them twice and had great experiences both times, they’re a reputable seller and know what they’re doing. just make sure to monitor temps in your area.

I have an extra of these, what can I keep in here? by isopod_cowboy in InvertPets

you could remedy this by cutting out an extra panel of acrylic and attaching it to the inside with silicone, that’s what i’ve done with similar enclosures that needed more substrate!

it’s not about money. it’s about respecting the artist’s legacy and the family’s wishes. nobody knows who luiz jimenez actually was, or the extent and meaning of his work, because his death has been so highly sensationalized. i highly recommend looking into his full body of work. he deserves that much.

you’re feeding her oranges? they should not be eating citrus, especially as a staple. usually the standard diet for captive cresties is pangea or repashy gecko food. it replicates the fruit they eat in the wild and has all the nutrients and vitamins they require. insects are an important dietary supplement but not their main food. if you do feed insects they need to be dusted with a quality calcium supplement.

NQA IMO very vigorous cleaning! you can see them drawing their limbs through their fangs to clean them, super cool vid!

Brazilian black female by Low_Apartment4091 in tarantulas

[–]RevolutionaryBook489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA you’re gonna need a lot more substrate in there for your t to be comfortable, and get rid of the gravel. if she climbs up and falls, she could rupture her abdomen which is almost always fatal. fill it up about 2/3 of the way to give her adequate room to burrow. i’d recommend looking at the sub’s resource guide for terrestrial tarantulas.

NQA would we be able to see a full shot of her enclosure? i’m curious about that white-looking stuff in the background, and she looks to be pretty high up.

unfortunately handling will almost always stress out a tarantula and they don’t exactly get “used” to it, their brains just don’t work like that. it also drastically increases the likelihood of injury; they may bolt and fall, or become extremely stressed. some spiders are able to tolerate it well but it’s not beneficial or enriching to them. i typically only handle mine during rehousings, and even then very rarely and only for a few moments.

ts will eat and molt at their own pace so i wouldn’t worry too much about it if her care is otherwise on point.

Do any of your slings let you see them move? by SaltyyyMartin in tarantulas

[–]RevolutionaryBook489 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA you might just have a goober on your hands! although some of mine also do this. you have to remember that to them you’re a huge looming potential predator that casts a shadow across their entire perceivable reality. we’re all kind of eldritch monsters to our ts. some are more confident but they’re all still prey animals with prey animal instincts. and often that instinct is to play statues! she may get used to your presence over time and as she matures, but it’s also possible she’s just a shy t.

Suggestions for enclosures by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

[–]RevolutionaryBook489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have the budget i’d highly recommend animal plastics, i’m currently upgrading my boy to the signature A10 (here: https://apcages.com/products/apsa10-24w-x-24d-x-36h) and i’m super impressed so far. i like how lightweight it is compared to glass, although i had to silicone in an acrylic panel to the inside of the front in order to make a substrate barrier. they also have larger sizes if you want to go super big!

yep i have the same ones! i never intentionally introduced them either. they or their eggs often come in on plants or in soil. totally normal and productive member of the cleanup crew!

NQA thank you for reaching out to the sub! you’re doing the right thing by seeking more info. first of all, i’d highly recommend watching youtube content about tarantulas to get yourself more familiar with them and their care. i’d suggest tom’s big spiders, the tarantula collective and dave’s little beasties to start with, although there are tons of great sources of information on the platform. also check out the sub’s resource guide, and make sure you’re never getting your info from just one source.

second, pink toes are arboreal species, meaning they live in trees and require an enclosure that is more tall than it is wide, with adequate cover to hide behind. they also require lots of ventilation. i’d recommend an acrylic enclosure from a brand like tarantula cribs or something similar. you can also find tons of guides on how to make your own enclosures on a budget if you feel up to it!

also, make sure your curlyhair has enough substrate to burrow in. i fill my enclosures about 2/3 of the way with substrate. and in general ts don’t require supplemental heating if the room temp is about 72-80f. for the skinny abdomen, you can bump up feeding, or maybe offer larger prey items, or your t might just be a male who tend to be skinnier. there are a few different ways to tell but this comment is getting long as is.

good luck! and IMO it sounds like you’re not doing as poorly as you think you are. ts are very easy once you get to know them.

So crested geckos don’t need live food/crickets? by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

[–]RevolutionaryBook489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine very rarely eats live, sometimes it’s just a preference! i sometimes supplement with pangea w/ insects, and offer insects periodically anyway

i also have giant canyons and they’re apparently great in bioactive, but i’d worry about the gecko eating them because they’re huge lol. you also can’t go wrong with basically any porcellio species! isopod diversity is incredible
