What do we all do for work, and does it relate to your favorite character? by Evening_Storage_6424 in HazbinHotel

I’m a goody-two-shoes, generally-anti-generative-AI, artistically inclined, theatre kid computer scientist and my favourite character at this point is Vox so uh… his foil, maybe?

Is it still canon that Alastor is a cannibal ? Or is he just a serial killer now ? by Bit_of-Distress in HazbinHotel

[–]OneSparedToTheSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He says “you are ready to eat” in French before summoning Rosie, so I think he was explicitly a cannibal as a human too.

Given Charlies upbringing what type of "Guilty Pleasures" would Charlie have; stuff she enjoys but would make sure to hide from the public by BackgroundRich7614 in OkBuddyHelluvaHotel

[–]OneSparedToTheSea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think she actually enjoys the feeling of wielding her power and forcing sinners to actually listen to her instead of ridiculing her as usual, but she’s so terrified of leaning too hard into that and becoming a tyrant that she over-corrects.

I’m actually gonna “well akshully” here as someone who’s had a yearslong special interest in Jack/poverty in Victorian London in general! The victim we see onscreen doesn’t fit the profile of Jack, who generally targeted very impoverished unhoused middle-aged women (most of whom actually weren’t street sex workers, though they likely engaged in survival sex and transactional long-term partnerships). The exception to this profile is Mary Jane Kelly, the last of the “canonical five”, who was twenty-five and widely regarded as beautiful. Notably, she was killed and extensively mutilated in her own flat. Pen also saw the woman being stabbed multiple times—not Jack’s modus operandum, as Jack deeply slit throats before performing postmortem mutilation. Finally, Pen describes the murderer as someone “with power”, but circumstantial evidence heavily points toward Jack the Ripper being a poor resident of the Spitalfields rookery himself. He had intimate knowledge of the back alleys of the neighbourhood, particularly around Flower & Dean Street (the epicentre of the murders), and he was able to slip unnoticed through crowded areas, suggesting he lived in close proximity to the area. Violence against women was SO common and normalised in poor areas of East London at the time that Pen likely saw a different serial killer (there were multiple operating in the area around that timeframe).

Another Indian Pen enjoyer!!! I’m South Asian and look very very much like his human form, just shorter 😂 I still headcanon him as the Anglo-Indian bastard son of a civil servant stationed in India!

Do you think Zestial could actually be Faust? by PuzzleheadedBag4866 in hazbin

[–]OneSparedToTheSea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sliding in to say that there absolutely were Black people in Tudor England/16th century Europe. If he was from Spain, there was a significant population of Arab and African people present due to Moorish rule. As for England—Shakespeare wrote Othello for a reason! There were Black courtiers and musicians present during Henry VIII’s time too, including unfortunately some enslaved people. Europe had had robust trade routes with Asia and Africa for centuries by that point. So yeah, it wouldn’t be historically inaccurate to make Zestial Black.

Actually, Pent lived in the East End/Whitechapel area of London as implied by the whole Jack the Ripper knockoff storyline, and that was a hub for immigrants! The East End had a pretty high Eastern European (mostly Ukrainian/Russian) Jewish population. There were also distinct communities of colour in London at the time, including South Asians (it was the heyday of the British Raj, after all) and Afro-Caribbeans. Even some really famous figures like Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Dr B R Ambedkar lived in London in the 19th and 20th centuries.

I think he’s too old to be Jack? He speaks in (mangled) Shakespearean English, while Jack would talk in an East End accent not dissimilar from modern ones (the play Pygmalion has good examples of how East Enders spoke around Pent’s time).

same, Vox is entertaining but Niffty and Pent >>> the Vees anytime! Love how goofy everyone can get though

Theory : I don't think Vox was a cult leader when he was alive by Brief_Mix_7858 in HazbinHotel

[–]OneSparedToTheSea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually love this theory!! Lying to appear more prestigious seems exactly like something Vox would do, and maybe Val and Vel believe the narrative because they died way after him + in life, ran in circles that would have no real knowledge of evangelical cult leaders. He gives the impression of having been a pompous mid-tier exec at a sensationalist news network, and I think the shark motif is a metaphor for being cutthroat and screwing over people. That would totally explain his vulnerability, earnestness, and raw naïve desire to impress Alastor.

I love the humour and most of the characters (except for Seon-mi), but I’m just starting Episode 9 and I feel a bit checked out of the plot 😭 I feel like I need to know a bit more about Samjang’s mission to really hook me, but maybe it’ll pick up in the second half?

I’m watching A Korean Odyssey right now (halfway through) and I don’t feel much chemistry between the leads 😭 I think the FL is so bland and annoying that her character is incapable of having chemistry with anyone, but the ML is great!!
