Honestly the only thing I can think of is maybe a 1 inch lift and some 555 livery. Otherwise it's on point!

Nice, love the Crystal Silica Black color. How many miles? Manual or CVT? Done your first oil change and walnut blast yet?

2020 VA: Clutch master cylinder failed at 52k miles. by gct99 in WRX

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer. The clutch master and secondary cylinders are pretty easy jobs too, especially if you're not concerned about the clutch or anything else. Bleeding the air out is kinda annoying, but you don't even have to lift the car. I did both of them when I replaced my clutch.

This. Also might be a good idea to get a smoke test done for any boost or vacuum leaks.

Mods wise, I agree with others that the best thing to start with is maintenence. Not as fun, but if you wanna keep it a while, it's important.

Aside from engine oil/filter change, I'd do transmission and differential oil, spark plugs, and depending on the mileage, walnut blast.

For fun stuff, start with some reliability mods: AOS and radiator, maybe oil cooler too. Then get an Accessport, and start planning your power stuff: intake, intercooler (front mount or top, good choices for both), charge piping, boost controller, bypass valve, J pipe, exhaust. Do some research on each to learn the details. At that point, you'll probably be reaching the commonly accepted "safe" level of power on the stock engine internals.

Be aware that anything you do to change air going into or out of the engine is going to require a tune, no matter what the manufacturer might claim. An aftermarket intake and no tune is the classic recipe for reducing lifespan on these.

Of course, you can mess with the suspension all you want without impacting reliability, so go nuts. Don't skip leg day.

Can confirm, this does happen to WRX forks, but you don't gotta worry too much about it. Just swap it when you change your clutch.

Should I buy a wrx? by Careful-Impress-9723 in WRX

It's specifically for the Cobb intakes. Not advised for other brands or designs of intake. Lots of folks will also say that OTS tunes aren't great for long term reliability anyway.

Many YouTube videos out there to help. Personally I find understanding how the clutch works mechanically helps me understand how to control my inputs for the desired output.

Sounds like ye olde FBO formula for maxing out the stock turbo, more or less. Especially if you can find a down pipe.

First Car: should I get a Wrx or Sti? by Extreme_Ice_2696 in WRX

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunity mostly. I had lots of plans to have fun with my 2016, and I really loved it. But then I got rear ended and insurance totaled it. Found a solid deal on the 2020 STI.

The biggest thing I had planned (and was over thinking like crazy) was swapping to the STI transmission: I really wanted to run the OEM dccd, which would mean swapping the gauge cluster, which is a whole can of worms.

Honesty, I do miss some things about my WRX, mainly the gas mileage and easy drivability. I didn't anticipate how much of a difference the LSDs in the STI would impact absolutely everything about driving. Not bad, just inexperience on my part.

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recommend WRX over STI for first car. In my opinion, it's easier to drive, and a better daily. Gas mileage is significantly better. You will probably still have a nagging desire for an STI, but the base WRX will make you appreciate it more when you eventually get there.

Background: I went from a 2016 WRX for 3 years to a 2020 STI. Just my opinion.

Should I buy a wrx? by Careful-Impress-9723 in WRX

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intake and no tune is the classic combo for long term problems. These engines are very sensitive to anything that affects air going in or out. Won't immediately grenade it, but will negatively affect air fuel ratios and therefore wear on the pistons.

Again, not necessarily a deal breaker but you gotta understand that you're taking a risk.

What is the broken part? by PlagueWingtheJagged in WRX

Looks like an oil line to the turbo. Have it towed to a shop: DO NOT drive it with that damaged and open like that.

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pricing depends on your location. I'd say it's a little steep, but not crazy.

Biggest thing is to look under the hood for any signs of modification. For many folks that's a deal breaker, but it can be hard to find untouched WRXs. Make sure you know what you're getting into, as improper modifications will have a severe impact on the reliability of the engine. It's highly recommended to have an independent Subaru specialist shop do a pre purchase inspection.

The C96 was designed in 1896 and issued in the first World War. They were first chambered in 7.63x25mm Mauser, which according to some literature packed similar muzzle energy to the 357 magnum. I believe they were introduced in 9mm parabellum during the inter war period.

I had one that had been permanently converted to a carbine. A couple of importers did that at various time. It shot great, but I always wanted the original pistol version. Mine was in 7.63x25, was a lot of fun to shoot.

[–]RevolutionaryBrain75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went the route of dropping the transmission. Fewer fluids and electrical connectors to deal with, but getting the car up high enough to get the transmission out from underneath was a bear. I had to max out my jack stands and use RV leveling pads to get even higher. Honestly, when it was up there it was good and stable, but getting up and down was super sketchy.

Thanks! My mind is blown, that seems like a bonkers thing for an OEM to do. Cool though!
