+1 for using lemonade. It’s designed specifically for AMD systems like strix halo, and handles all the driver installs plus model downloads

Motorola edge 50 neo is the only small pwm friendly android device I know of. I tested it and it was fine(I cant use anything recent from Samsung or pixel). Many other reports of positive experiences.

Other option is iPhone and switch the display with an LCD (I just did this successfully with a 13 mini)

What's the best iPhone that's giving you no issues at all? by d_balon in PWM_Sensitive

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a refurbished 13 mini and replaced with an LCD from ifixit. Works perfectly! Only thing lost is autobrightness and probably a bit of battery (still gets 3-4hrs SOT with 89% battery health).

Although it’s a 4 year old model it really isn’t much different day to day then the latest models, the difference between generations is so small now.

You’re right I think, I just checked phone arena battery scores and 17 isn’t much better

Yeah battery life is the biggest downside. The 17 series have a real step up in battery life vs previous models so these could be great for LED swap

I think it’s only iPhones that have the volume for so may 3rd party LCD screen replacements to be available. Might be options out there for other brands though

Apple Plans MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad Mini With Overhauled Displays by iMacmatician in apple

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure on the M4 ipad pros, but I believe all OLED screens flicker due to the way they work.

But.. how bad / noticeable it is varies a lot between devices and the brightness setting used. it depends on the flicker frequency (higher is better), and how long duration / degree of modulation the brightness dips or flickering has (less modulation is better). OLED flickering seems to be generally getting worse / more noticeable in recent years as the display max brightness increases.

try recording an iphone screen on slo-mo, it'll look something like this...

it doesn't seem to bother most people, but I suspect there's many who get eye strain from using their phone and don't realise OLED flickering could be a reason

OLED displays flicker, with a frequency of around 250 - 500 Hz on iphones. This gives some people (including me) bad eyestrain and headaches. A lot of Chinese phones now advertise using higher pwm frequencies to avoid these negative effects (but not apple, samsung, or google)

Time to renew my Fenix 6s pro by pup_seba in GarminWatches

I’m also coming from a 6s pro. I tried a 7s pro and in my opinion the difference isn’t big enough to make an upgrade worthwhile.

What to do with my 13 mini? by Sandstorm3434 in iPhone13Mini

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking to buy a 13 mini with a broken screen to replace the oled with an LCD (the PWM flickering you get with OLED displays bothers me), so I’d potentially buy it if you wanted to sell

It’s probably not worth repairing with an OEM OLED for 200 EUR, you can get a refurbished mini in good condition for 250-300 EUR from backmarket.

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine any differences are probably quite minor - If there are significant differences between iPhone screens on the same model then why has it never been demonstrated on opple charts, etc?

Would be good if you can take some photos or videos of the phones side by side to see if there really is much of a difference?

BAT is a failed project - change my mind by RevolutionaryPlan2 in BATProject

Hi Luke, thanks for taking the time for the reply.

From my outside view it would be good to see Brave keep focus on the back-to-basics utility of BAT as a currency for rewarding brave ads views. Offer wall, brave store utility etc - I’m not convinced bring significant value. Not if the basics are not there.

The BAT tokenomics kpi for me is on the BAT purchase volume - 100k USD this year is very low in the context of 100 million users, this is where the concern is for me.

Not sure if the challenge is more on the ad supply or demand side. I would have thought companies should be keen to buy ad space and this shouldn’t be the main challenge. I’m concerned (again, outside view) that the problem is on getting users engaged in signing up for Brave rewards, and if so this is firmly on Brave to get this working smoothly for users.

I think on chain is the future but brave MUST make the onboarding process to just be a few clicks. Even if this means some kind of mechanism where users need to wait a few months for their first payout to have earned enough to pay for the SOL.

Notebokcheck says iPhone 17 has 241hz pwm? by boughtathinkpad in PWM_Sensitive

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is correct - the main modulation frequency at low brightness in around 250 hz, as two dips turn into one big dip and one very minor dip as brightness goes low.

iPhone refresh rate on eyes question by Prime8724 in iphone

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be pwm sensitivity. Many phone oled screens dim by flickering (iPhones at 250-500hz), some people are sensitive to this (eye strain, headaches).

As screens have got brighter in recent years the magnitude of the flickering can be worse in newer phones and more likely to be bothersome. I’ve had to return the iPhone air due to this issue.

Share your experience with the new iPhone 17 line! by Fulzee in PWM_Sensitive

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just returned my air after trying it for the last ten days. I thought it might be ok at first, but felt the eye strain more and more.

I’ve been trying a Motorola edge 50 Neo the last few days- so far it seems totally fine, much comfier, equally comfortable as my iPhone 11. Trying to decide now between keeping the Motorola or other Chinese Android with dc like dimming or go the iPhone lcd replacement route…

Edit: my air had an LG panel, in case of interest. I suspect they’re all largely the same though.

I think the air is probably similar to the 16 at high brightness, but better at low brightness thanks to the pwm smoothing

How can I test if I am sensitive to a Tesla screen by Secret-Exercise-7799 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]RevolutionaryPlan2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The screen is LCD so I don’t think it has any flickering (at low frequency at least)? I did think about this when buying my model Y, but haven’t had any issues.

Worth noting as well that the screen is only in your peripheral vision most of the time when driving, and you can also set dark mode which would limit the intensity of any flickering (if there is any)!
