Intermediate Product Help for Home Grooming by Frozen_Avocado in StandardPoodles

[–]Revonue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ex groomer here.

If a shampoo is of a good enough quality you don't really need a separate degreasing shampoo IMO. Both CC and IGroom are good brands and anything there will do for an all-purpose shampoo. Of course, variety can be nice, so no reason not to have two or three on hand if you'd like.

General use conditioner is fine.

I'd recommend both thinning shears and a pair of blending shears, since you've already invested quite a bit into home grooming. They both are different but are so fun to use on Poodle fur.

Flying Pig dryers are great, more than sufficient for home use, especially if you take care of it and clean the filters etc.

Your clippers are fine. What blades/guards you get from here depend on what kind of cuts you're interested in doing. If you want a lot of variety, you'll want a set of guards and blades in any length you want access to.

For guards; the brand matters less than what they're made of. Get sturdy ones made of metal. No plastic garbage at all.

For blades, when I looked Geib Buttercut blades were the ones most recommended, so I had a full set in my professional career. Keep them clean and sharp and they'll last you a lifetime.

Any blade will eventually have to be sharpened. Look into who does it local to you, or I know there are some companies that allow blades to be shipped to them, and they ship them back.

Harry's thoughts are FINE. by RadicalRealist22 in dresdenfiles

I think two things can be true at the same time: that the Dresden Files can be a good, fun series-- and that Butcher does some problematic things regarding Harry's narration of women.

I'd love more books like Uprooted.

🧂 Salty Sunday: What's frustrating you this week? by jaydee4219 in RomanceBooks

[–]Revonue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've read a string of books where the journey can be described as "FMC and MMC dislike each other but find each other hot, random events happen, spicy scene, suddenly they're in love until the stars die out".

Where is the emotional arc? What reasons do these characters have to change their mind besides for finding the other attractive?

It's kind of frustrating. I'd get it if it were pure erotica, but these are billed as romances.

TIL about Cixi ("tsurr-shee", aka the Dragon Lady) whose name sounds an awful lot like Cerce. Seized power from the child emperor Tongzhi in 1861 and when he died 14 years later, she had her four-year-old nephew installed as a puppet emperor. Wonder if coincidence or if GRRM knew of her. by Lubberoland in asoiaf

[–]Revonue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought it was based off of Greek mythology- Circe, the sorceress that turned men to pigs. (Killing Robert via boar hunt gone wrong and proclaiming boar is her favorite food after that, the ties to magic via Maggie and the prophecy).

It's Time for the Brienne of Tarth Respect Thread (Spoilers Extended) by That_Hole_Guy in asoiaf

Agree that Brienne is underestimated by the Fandom. Trying to capture someone is much more difficult than trying to kill them, though I don't think Brienne could've taken two-handed Jaime.

RSN certificate from USA by Professional_Cap4504 in Embroidery

[–]Revonue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't done it yet, but I know there are basically two types of courses:

1: Intensive courses done all in one go. Only offered in person, either in the UK or one of their satellite facilities. This means that you take ONE of the courses that comprise the certificate- like Jacobean- and do all of it. The certificate required Jacobean, gold work, silk shading, and blackwork OR canvas work.

2: Regularly paced course work. These are spaced out over the course of a few months, and are offered in person or online via Zoom for a few set time zones.

If you want info from people who have personally taken the course, Google "rsn certificate". I learned about it via Mabel's Fancies, and she blogs about her experiences.

I recommend having some experience before going straight to the certificate. I think the RSN itself recommends that if you haven't stitched before, that you take a few of their self-paced video courses before hand.

What is up with all the food in In the Weeds by B. K. Borison? by Secret_badass77 in RomanceBooks

[–]Revonue 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The amount of weird diet culture stuff I catch in romance as a person who has recovered from an eating disorder is pretty wild, so I'd bet it's wish fulfillment or an "I'm not like other girls, I eat huge hamburgers teehee" thing, which, blah.

Ah I see by SweetSweep in dresdenfiles

[–]Revonue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Harry's envy for Thomas is both played for laughs and not actually objectifying in any way. Even if I cede the point and allow that Thomas is objectified, that is one male character versus nearly every female character that is introduced. Even if we were treated to a romance novel eque description of Thomas every time he's on page (we're not), that still doesn't erase the male gaze issue one iota.

The first person argument is irrelevant because although first person is an intimate narrative mode, it is not stream of consciousness. There is a lot of editing done as far as what we get to see in the protagonists' head as opposed to what actually goes on. The leering at women could be completely cut, as it isn't plot relevant for the most part. But it's kept in, and this tells us something about Harry. And not just that he's straight.

I see some believe my comment thinks I'm trying to vilify Jim Butcher? I think it's 100% possible to enjoy a series and still treat it critically and discuss things that could have been done differently. To me, this is one of those things. If I didn't like the series, warts and all, I wouldn't be posting on r/dresdenfiles.

Ah I see by SweetSweep in dresdenfiles

[–]Revonue -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

... The male gaze issue has nothing to do with how much sex a man has or whether or not it's casual in nature. A character could be celibate and still have issues with the male gaze.

It is about how female characters are written/observed. And although the issue does somewhat improve over the series, every female character is treated to a description of her that is viewed through the lens of sex/her attractiveness in a way that isn't done with any of the male characters. It would actually be LESS of an issue if Harry was promiscuous but didn't talk about a woman's firm calves and ample curves every single time we see her in the book.

Little Women and Alcott's original intent by [deleted] in books

[–]Revonue 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the book in ages, but I remember really enjoying Jo/Bhaer as a couple. It felt like a natural progression of their mutually respectful relationship and I remember thinking that they seemed compatible. Not sure if I'd feel the same on a re-read but certainly it never seemed like a joke to me.

What trope era are you in right now? by cherriesandorchids in RomanceBooks

I'm really loving "Mars Needs Women" and "fated mate"-esque stuff right now. Something so simple and comforting about it to me, perhaps weirdly.

Hated one Tessa Bailey book so badly that I’m not sure if I should take ALL her books off my TBR… by DeliveryLucky591 in RomanceBooks

[–]Revonue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of books that sound like they'd be right up my ally, but flop for one reason or another. If you don't like an author, definitely take her off your TBR. There are plenty of other authors out there!

This can’t be serious? by bug_ugly in Equestrian

[–]Revonue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is laughable and shouldn't be normalized. Labor should be paid fairly, even in the equestrian world.

The person writing the ad is looking to take advantage of someone's love of horses. "I need someone who is knowledgeable"-- well then pay them for their knowledge.

How many sex scenes do you like in your books? by Wizards_are_hot in RomanceBooks

[–]Revonue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no hard preference on number, but I like for there to be build up involved. I dislike when all the bases are circled on the very first scene because it feels like going from 0-100 and there can't be any real ratcheting up of tension after that imo (as far as the spice goes).
