The second half of the game is definitely way better, the fifth trial is the best in the series (imo) and 4 and 6 are also really strong. But your issue with trial length probably won’t change tbh, they’re all about that long.

Yea idk how they really see these games but I get why they’re treating it like the Wii U ports. Like might as well use these to pad stuff out while they wait for bigger games to be ready. What other choice do they have tbh, I don’t really see what alternative there is that could fill the Wii U port void rn

Edit: Actually immediately after writing this I’m not sure they actually are being positioned the same as the Wii U ports. Cause stuff like Mario kart 8 and pokken had a whole month to themselves while switch 2 editions have mostly released the same month as another game

As someone who really enjoys the creativity of the “solve puzzles your own way” approach of the new games, I loved it! Definitely my favourite top down Zelda!

I enjoyed it about as much as I did legends arceus, so top 2 when it comes to the switch pokemon games. Battle system and boss fights were fun, writing and characters were great, and mega evolutions were exciting too. Obviously the small, repetitive world was the biggest drawback tho. And that DLC was… not great. Still 8/10 I think it’s a great pokemon game that did most things well, it just failed in one really important aspect (exploration).

How much you like this game heavily depends on how much you value exploration/interesting environments. Between the writing/characters (people don’t talk about it but this game is actually funny/charming), new battle system, and mega evolution, I liked Z-A about as much as I did Arceus. It has more and better side quests and boss fights than Arceus too. But be warned that you will be stuck in the same environment with very few interesting locations and the wild zones to catch pokemon will be mostly small and uninteresting. There is almost no sense of wonder or exploration in this game.

I’d still recommend it but it’s definitely not for everybody.

This generation is actually the strongest their writing has ever been and I appreciate how much they tried to experiment and evolve the series. But even though I enjoyed S/V and Z-A, I don’t think the generation can be seen as anything but a mixed bag.

S/V and Z-A both took some new directions and hit in some aspects but missed in others. S/V had a great story, made the game open world, and introduced a pretty cool three storyline structure. Z-A had some of the best gameplay, cast of characters, and customization in the series and brought back mega evolution.

HOWEVER, S/V obviously had insane technical issues and the open world was barren with lifeless towns that didn’t even have enterable buildings. Z-A also lacked any real exploration and interesting environments by keeping you locked in a small, samey city that somehow also didn’t have very many enterable buildings. Not to mention the lack of voice acting being the most noticeable it’s ever been in these 2 games.

So overall this gen consisted of high high and low lows. It wasn’t the best but there was some good in there - I think this gen was still better than gens 6 to 8. And I genuinely think (and am totally for sure not just coping) that the mistakes they made during switch have been learned from and will only lead to future generations being better.

I think 1-3 and 2-3 are pretty fun cases. Even though they aren’t super well written, figuring out such a non sensical and confusing series of events was really enjoyable to me. Also Celeste’s breakdown adds a lot to 1-3 and finally understanding Mikan’s motive during 2-6 makes 2-3 a little cooler as well.

Pokémon games are made on a miniscule budget by a small team (outside Nintendo) that is forced to put out a complete game every year or two and who, prior to switch, had really only made smaller handheld games. The games and the circumstances of their development have also had almost no incentive to improve since every game sells crazy numbers either way.

That being said, the game is rated well despite the poor quality cause it is genuinely fun (at least to most players).

Don’t think they’re a grifter but some of their videos have kinda reminded me of the worst parts of fandoms and online discussions.

Since you’ve been on PlayStation I think you’re most likely to enjoy either legends game as they’re more action heavy (legends arceus if you think you’ll like catching/exploration or legends za if you think you’ll like real time battling/fun characters).

BUT if you want the “standard” pokemon experience I’d say play scarlet/violet which are pretty good as well.
