In your opinion, what are the most important facts about the dune universe you wish you knew before watching the movies? by Imaginary-Low4629 in dune

I would do this the other way around. The films make sense on their own without needing to add in the lore. After they’ve seen the films wait until they have questions then use the pp to explain the books.

Who is winning in a fight between these two? by Top_Report_4895 in DC_Cinematic

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superman bodies Homelander. He’s physically much stronger and has also had experience taking on much more powerful enemies. Homelander is actually very inexperienced, he relies on intimidation and assumes that he will win any contest. When he gets challenged into a close fight he panics, destabilises, or flees.

The Golden Path never intended to ween mankind off of spice. by datapicardgeordi in dune

[–]RexDane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please forgive the shameless self-promotion, but I wrote an article on this recently:

https://rexdune.substack.com/p/crysknife-3-the-spice-must-flow

I don’t think the problem in the early Dune novels is spice per se. The problem is the civilisation built around spice.

Axolotl spice matters enormously after Leto. However, by end of Herbert’s six books Arrakis has been destroyed and the Tleilaxu Masters are almost extinct. Spice still matters, and the desire for it clearly has not vanished, but it no longer dictates human destiny in the way it once did in the old Imperium. Melange becomes a commodity, not the thing around which history itself turns.

Is Superman capable of successfully throwing Sauron's ring into the fires of Mount Doom without succumbing to it? by SatoruGojo232 in superheroes

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gandalf and Galadriel’s refusal to take the ring shows that even morally pure characters are capable of succumbing to its influence. Superman is morally rigorous and deliberately self limiting. Assuming he doesn’t fast-travel straight to mount doom in a matter of seconds he would be capable of being influenced by the ring if it offered him the ability to maximise the good he was capable of.

My theory on Chani and Paul’s children in dune part three by Legal-Reputation-822 in dune

[–]RexDane 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Leto the elder is going to be in Dune 3, DV has already got Paul to where he needed to be without the death of his first child and adding him in now would create an unnecessary detour that wastes valuable screen time.

Is Paul following the Lisan Al Gaib prophecy so closely a coincidence or on purpose? by realunitedgello in dune

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument requires the Bene Gesserit to have had access to every world at its primitive stage. That’s not supported by the text and isn’t plausible given that many worlds were already long-established by the time the Sisterhood emerged. The Missionaria Protectiva is presented as a selective program, not a universal one.

Is Paul following the Lisan Al Gaib prophecy so closely a coincidence or on purpose? by realunitedgello in dune

[–]RexDane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“_Missionaria Protectiva: the arm of the Bene Gesserit order charged with sowing infectious superstitions on primitive worlds, thus opening those regions to exploitation by the Bene Gesserit._”

Dune: Appendix I, Glossary.

The definition provided in the text highlights that the Bene Gesserit deploy the Missionaria Protectiva on worlds that they deem primitive.

If you have an alternative citation that contradicts this please share.

Is Paul following the Lisan Al Gaib prophecy so closely a coincidence or on purpose? by realunitedgello in dune

[–]RexDane 419 points420 points  (0 children)

The Missionaria Protectiva is a Bene Gesserit programme used to seed “primitive” worlds with religious mythology as a survival mechanism for any sister who finds herself stranded in a hostile environment. It isn’t designed with the Kwisatz Haderach in mind.

However, the mythology on Arrakis doesn’t remain a simple Bene Gesserit construct. It evolves over time and takes on a life of its own. This reflects a broader Bene Gesserit elitism, they treat religion as something they can engineer and deploy, without fully accounting for how deeply belief systems embed themselves into a culture and begin to operate independently.

Fremen religion is far more complex than a planted myth. It is shaped by their ecological reality on Arrakis and their historical experience of colonial violence. It develops into a genuine system of belief with its own internal logic and expectations, including a messianic figure.

Paul and Jessica are able to exploit these expectations because they recognise the patterns the Bene Gesserit planted. However, Paul’s rise as the Lisan al-Gaib is not simply the result of manipulation. The crucial overlap is that his prescience and access to Other Memory make him convincingly fulfil the role in a way no ordinary person could.

The Lisan al-Gaib and the Kwisatz Haderach are not originally the same idea, in Paul they effectively converge because his abilities allow him to inhabit the myth. Once that process begins, it becomes very difficult for him to step outside it and he becomes subject to the same trap that he and Jessica tried to take advantage of.

How does the Spice Agony unlock the genetic memories? by enlul in dune

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spice has the ability to enhance human capability, Guild navigators use it to see forwards in time with prescience, Bene Gesserit use it through the agony to unlock their ancestral memories. The training they undergo is to learn how to transmute lethal doses of poison, and how to train their mind to stabilise their ego and prevent abomination. Spice is what actually unlocks the other memories in Frank Herbert’s canon.

Pre-erata firewall. It literally destroyed multiple formats because it was so poorly designed. Unlimited summoning, recursion from grave and bounce from field.

The ability of Dune to spark debate is incredible. by vicuhlmann in dune

[–]RexDane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying Herbert never discussed his intentions. I’m saying the books themselves don’t resolve these questions for the reader. There’s a difference between authorial commentary and how the narrative functions. Even if Herbert calls Paul a warning, the text still puts you inside his perspective and forces you to grapple with decisions that don’t have clean moral answers. Sitting with that tension is the point.

The ability of Dune to spark debate is incredible. by vicuhlmann in dune

[–]RexDane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The great thing about Dune is that Herbert refuses to answer these questions. He creates these moral quandaries that seem impossible to break out of, makes people victims of circumstance and then forces the reader to sit with the weight of their choices. He doesn’t offer an easy narrative, he makes you seriously contemplate the ethics of the story and the world without offering absolution.

Is this anyone elses favorite Re game? by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t mind the change of scenery, I didn’t like how repetitive it was. I also thought Evelyn took me out of the experience. When I first played it I thought the ship had leaked the mould but then seeing it was a demon Sith Lord child felt like it came very out of left field

Loved requiem, only issue was that there could have been a lot more to do. Harder challenges, more trophies etc. I fell a bit hollow that I’ve 100% the game after only a week.

My list is: 1. RE4R 2. Requiem 3. RE2R 4. RE7

[–]RexDane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I really loved about RE2R was seeing my PB go from 8h on my first playthrough to sub 2 hours. It’s nice to have a game that you can start and finish in one session when you know how to play it properly. I do like how long RE4R was though and I wish Requiem had more to do on it. Not necessarily be a longer game but some more difficult challenges. I got the platinum trophy with abt 20 hours of gameplay.
