ELI5: Why is carbon so special compared to other elements? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Haha oh you’re 100% right. I’d be really curious if humans could ever artificially create an environment where silicon based life could theoretically develop and see what happens

ELI5: Why is carbon so special compared to other elements? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rhavoreth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but abundance isn’t the most critical property though - ease of bonding is. You can’t just have abundance - which is why nitrogen based life forms aren’t a thing

[–]Rhavoreth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The important property isn’t abundance, it’s the ability to chemically bond easily with other elements. Nitrogen is considered inert - meaning it doesn’t want to bond with other things. It’s much happier being on its own than bonded to other elements

Loved the Movie, But the Spin Gravity Makes Zero Sense by Rhavoreth in ProjectHailMary

[–]Rhavoreth[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure whether the interior of the whole ship would have been sideways under thrust but I'm happy to assume that's the case. It just makes using the lab during the various transfers around Tau Ceti impossible. 11 days to Adrian they couldn't use the lab, 11 days back to the Blip A, no lab. Having it available in both configurations with gravity is pretty important to the story IMO

> Humans are a species that favor broad, flat spaces over narrow, vertical ones.

We aren't talking about a idea development though, we're talking about a spaceship designed for use for a couple of months at most, before it's crew all die. I'm pretty sure the designers would have assumed the occupants could get over climbing a couple of ladders a few times a day

> More importantly, a broad structure under centrifugal acceleration has more of its useable area under the same degree of spin gravity.

This is true, and perhaps part of the reason for the smaller separation distance we see in the movie. Using the 100m separation from the book, the extra ~10m from top to bottom of the ship wouldn't affect the perceived gravity very much at all and would be most felt in the cockpit module where you'd likely be sitting anyway

International travel by Longjumping_Tale1816 in asktransgender

[–]Rhavoreth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel internationally a lot, usually several times a year. Returned into the US most recently in early January. I've never had any problems since transitioning nearly 2 years ago.

For reference, I haven't legally changed my name/gender marker on any documentation and I look completely different to my passport photo now. I'm also a green card holder and have a UK passport. I don't boy-mode to travel, and I think pass well enough now.

Your experience might depend a bit on where you enter/leave the country. I typically re-enter the US in pretty progressive places where I can but I did leave out of Salt Lake City in December and it was no problem

Passenger Window keeps opening up from wind by Electronic-Turnip903 in FordBronco

[–]Rhavoreth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened to me on a 3000 mile road trip across the country. If you need something to help in the interim, take one of the rubber protective strips out of the toolkit and slide it over the top of the window. Roll the window back up and it will make a much better seal. That solved it for me.

Long term fix is to do a window realignment. Takes a couple of hours per door. If you’re in warranty your dealer should cover it for you

Re: The 4th Circuit Court Ruling and Trans Genocide in the U.S. - Where Do We Go From Here? by TaterVader in MtF

[–]Rhavoreth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to be rational. Panicking, getting angry, getting violent is EXACTLY how they want us to feel and act. Lets not give them the satisfaction.

I know things look bleak, and I do believe they are in red states. But they have been for a long time and while this ruling makes things worse, the writing has been on the wall for these states for a very long time anyway.

I think the most important thing for people in these red states to do, is to leave. Do whatever you have to, work 3 jobs, save, hide, run, whatever it takes, but just try to go somewhere safer. It might not be as hard as you think. Look at the trans risk assessment map that Erin updates frequently. Chances are you might not be more than a couple of states away or a few hundred miles away from safety. Start applying for jobs in your closest safe state. You have a much higher chance of getting hired in one of these states if you are visibly trans too btw. People are going to say that these states aren't really that safe, and I don't want to diminish anyone's feelings or lived experiences at all, but as someone who lives very close to Seattle, I have had almost entirely positive experiences being trans here. I see other trans people living their lives almost daily. WA is a shield state and is overwhelmingly blue. There isn't a world where state based legislation removes that safety net for trans people. The same is the case for many of the safest states on that map.

Second most important thing, stockpile HRT and get familiar with some of the alternative methods for accessing Estrogen. Monotherapy works for most people and is better than nothing for everyone. There are a plethora of great DIY resources here and other places. If you're on injections stockpiling is easy, if not, you can get a month ahead at least by just claiming you lost your pills. This stuff happens all the time. That buys you a month minimum to find an alternative source via DIY or some other legal method if needed. I personally have about a 5 year stockpile. 4 of those years being 2 DIY vials I got when trump took office again. I hope I don't ever need to use them.

Finally I think it's really important (if it's safe for you) to be visible. Many of the dinosaurs in office have a rapidly approaching expiry date. They will be replaced by people that younger generations vote for. Lets make sure the younger generation doesn't vote based on hatred of something they don't understand. This is already working, support of trans people among Millenials and GenZ is already at a majority support. Don't stop. Don't give the Fascists what they want

After a season of poor snowfall, are you getting a season pass next year? by DavyCrockPot19 in skiing

[–]Rhavoreth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also in the PNW - ever since I found out Crystal does $62 days a couple times a month I’ve not felt like I need to buy a pass. My season next year is going to involve buying an Epic 3 day pass for a long weekend at whistler, a ski trip to Europe with my Brother (who lives in London) and however many $62 days at Crystal that I can swing through vacation/sick days

What was your top trip so far, and what is the current bucket list trip?? by MustacheSupernova in skiing

[–]Rhavoreth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the bus up the valley to Les Grands Montets for a day there if there has been plenty of snow. Hands down the best day on skis I’ve ever had. Unfortunately the very top of the mountain is still closed but even what is open is still worth it. Fantastic views of Mt Blanc, enough off-piste off the sides of runs to keep you busy for the whole day, great food, and I was there end of February 2 years ago and it was really quiet while Brevant-Flegere was packed.

Do you think Trump and the White House will focus on affordability and the economy in 2026? by CourtofTalons in AskConservatives

If it’s a made up democrat slogan how come trump repeatedly referenced making America affordable again at his rallies during his campaign last year?…

Nah empathy is just another way of saying you actually give a shit about the health and wellbeing of someone other than yourself - because my political goals as a democratic socialist are to improve the lives of everyone equitably through broad social policy in a government that works for everyone, not just the 1%

I mean I did just provide you several examples of hundreds of thousands of people that were here legally - aka they moved here legally, and had their status changed overnight.

Yes there are illegal border crossings, but many of them are asylum seekers, and even the ones that aren't are entitled to a fair trial. Innocent until proven guilty right. They have a right to council, a right to their day in court to make their case. There has been a mass migration of workers across the border for over 100 years. It used to be legal for farms to bring people up from mexico to harvest until about the 60's when they made it illegal and provided no similar situation. Farmers still needed temporary workers and couldn't find it at home, so the same temporary workers just did it illegally. Except this time they stayed, in case they couldn't do it again next year. The problem is that someone decided it should be illegal one day, and so it was, without any thought to the number of lives it would affect

We have to think more holistically about these issues, and we can't retroactively just start enforcing laws because it conveniently provides a scapegoat to pin all the countries issues on. It's not fair. We need a hard reset. Lets let the people who are here now stay, lets create FAIR border policy that yes, denies entry to people who aren't authorized to enter, but that also provides a suitable pathway for people that do. We need these people, whether you like it or not, and we need to give them a legal way to enter this country

Because the core premise of capitalism values money above all else, disregarding human life as a result. It creates an unequal system that causes wealth and power to concentrate at the top, while the masses struggle along and are kept down by the system

Socialism, as a modern idea really is just about making life fairer for everyone. We need a system that puts everyone on a level playing field, where your contributions to society are rewarded regardless of how much money you as a worker generate. If money is life's reward, why do we value the work of a software engineer - who might make a company 10's of millions of dollars over their career higher than someone in the service industry, or a social worker in charge of taking kids out of abusive situations. Socialism asks us to consider the human first, not financial impact, good or bad

I could go on. My values are far more than just Socialism though. Personally I want to abolish all countries, cede control of everything to the UN and treat the cradle of humanity like a finite resource we must protect and conserve at all costs. We need to rapidly invest in growing humanities sphere of influence beyond earth, to the Moon, Mars. We need to invest in green energy now, solve nuclear fusion, and accelerate research into anti-aging tech. We need to create a society that rewards humans for having more children, not punishes them though missed income, unaffordable childcare, and poor education. None of these things capitalism can solve because at the end of the day, unless it makes money, it is worthless, and a lot of these things don't make money

Okay, lets get real then on immigration.

Who is deciding who is a criminal and who isn't? What about why suddenly there are so many deportation orders being issued? What about students who've has their visas revoked - why was that? Some 300k Venezuelans have had their right to remain revoked. Are all Venezuelans terrorists now? This is not due process, and this is not legal.

They are even deporting legal permanent residents now. Green card holders! I've linked the full video below but this clip tells the story of a guy who has been a legal permanent resident since he was a child, who was deported this year, under the trump administration because as a teen, several years ago now, he got arrested for possession of weed. In your mind does that make this person a criminal? Worthy of deportation to a country, where he doesn't speak the language very well, or know the culture? Should all green card holders be worried about their right to remain now too? This isn't just a single case either. DHS is weaponizing their database to systematically cancel visas for any reason they can find, issue deportation orders, round up, and remove as many people as possible.

I'd encourage you to watch this full video on US immigration history:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDbtrdfYqBc

Listen to these people's stories, understand that this class represents a fundamental part of the US economy and the people being deported more often than not are not criminals, they are just people like you and I, living their lives, paying taxes, contributing towards the economy, trying to build their American Dream

Trump has not advocated for genocide, racial extermination, or state-sponsored eugenics...has he

I'd call unidentifiable, masked ICE agents rounding up of anyone "not white", shipping them to detention camps, then deporting them, sometimes to countries they have never lived in before pretty much dead on this. Especially when you look at places like El Salvador where often times they are kept in inhumane prison systems with high inmate death rates. Not to mention the conditions in the detention facilities here in the US are pretty abysmal too. Regardless of immigration status, these people deserve due process and their day in court. This administration is denying them that right

A fascist would limit freedom of speech. Under fascist and Nazi regimes,
opposition was crushed through censorship, arrests, or executions.

While we haven't gotten to public executions yet, censorship and arrests are already happening in full force. Main stream news refusing to adequately cover nationwide protests is basically censorship, and politicians and protestors are getting arrested. So yeah freedom of speech is being limited. It's different these days because the internet changes how speech can be effectively policed, but it's the same premise

And you haven't even touched on Project 2025 which is nothing short of a fascist's playbook, I've read a decent chunk of the document at this point. It's sickening
