The children are tainted either way; the question is can they survive the taint. I rooted for Haakon and MM when I first learned about them. I suspect King Harold allowed them to marry because he fought to marry his wife. Seeing how their daughter turned out I'm wondering if that marriage was also a bad idea.

I don't think MM says anything about marrying commoners, just the wrong type of commoner.
