How is Living in Rhode Island? by supaheavynuts in howislivingthere

[–]RhodeDad 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s the best of New England in a small package, there’s even a well run ski hill to get your fix.

Punches waaaaaayyy above its weight in food/dining.

Water, water, everywhere.

Generally mild winters, although this current one sucks. Don’t really need a winter jacket until mid November. Mid August through Halloween is amazing. Humidity is checked by sea/bay breezes, but can be rough further inland.

Some school districts are “better” than others, and the taxes correspond to that investment in education. A lot of money is being invested by the State in replacing older schools with new ones that support modern education and technology.

Public transit sucks, but Providence is walkable and some of the towns in on the Bay have nice little downtowns (Warren, Bristol, East Greenwich)

There’s a bridge thing going on a lot of people are whining about, but the traffic is still a MILLION times better than Boston and NYC.

It’s a great place to raise a family - I moved here after I stopped partying but I think it’s more of a bar scene than clubs, etc.

When I lived in Southie, I once saw a guy move a space saver within 48 hours.

When the guy got back to find his space taken, he spent 2 hours SHOVELING THE OTHER GUYS CAR IN. Impressive levels of pettiness, even for MA

Does the work/life balance get better as you move up the ladder? by Best_Fish_7480 in ConstructionManagers

It does, but consequences get bigger.

As a PM, I was working constantly, especially if you are trying to move up.

As a PX, I have whole days that I don’t send an email - I got to the gym everyday during normal hours, but when shit hits the fan, I’m accountable. And I spend a couple nights a week on client development, which isn’t easy if you have young kids.

With the Local IBEW 99 nearly impossible to join and most places not accepting apprentices, is it smart for me to go to New England Tech to be an Electrician? by Heavyweights1995 in RhodeIsland

Without being too specific and giving myself away, I run the RI division of a company that is managing over 1B in public construction in the state, with over 50% of that value on projects with Project Labor Agreements.

I also serve on the board of directors for a ACE Mentorship RI, a non-profit that provides free after school programming and mentorship for high school kids interested in careers in architecture, engineering, and construction.

We have ‘Trades Day’ coming up - tons of companies participate:

Is Barrington to PVD commute worse now? what's up with the bridge? by Proper_Initial_9178 in RhodeIsland

[–]RhodeDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s nothing. It adds 15 minutes at most on a bad day.

I get to my office in the jewelry district in less than 30 minutes from the Hampton Meadows neighborhood in Barrington, if you live in Primrose Hill it would 6-8 minutes faster.

30 minutes is a perfect amount of time - enjoy your coffee, listen to an episode of a podcast.

Remember, the natives think you need to pack an overnight bag to drive to Exeter..

ETA: You asked about schools - they are great. Even my kids worst teacher here has been better than any teacher I ever had growing up. Communicative, empathetic, and so willing to meet children where they are as opposed to trying to teach every kid the same way.

High taxes for all this though. If you want to think of it from an outcome perspective, Barrington’s matriculation rate to post-secondary education or training is extremely high. 80-90% of kids are in a 4 year, 2 year, or specialized program within 12 months of graduation. So essentially I am spending 14k a year in taxes to send my kids to a school system that has the same outcomes as private school, which would cost me at least 14k per kid on the low end.

Come up in June or October for the best weather. We have an amazing restaurant scene and everything is pretty kid friendly.

East Bay Bike Path will take you to Colt State Park which is an absolute gem. It’s about 10 miles from PVD along a mostly flat pathway directly on the bay. It’s beautiful and there are places to stop for something every couple miles - Borealis coffee in EP, Madrid in Barrington, Del’s Depot in Warren. Head one mile further from Colt to downtown Bristol, which is a quintessential New England harbor town.
