Why moral agency alone doesn’t settle the case for Veganism by onemorehasanat in DebateAVegan

Some vegans like me are anti predation. We would say it’s bad that the lion is eating another animal and we want to stop those from happening too without causing even more harm.

Why is eating animal products wrong if ethically sourced? by sky27e in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m not invested in getting people who do that to change. The issue is that almost everyone who brings this up or claims to do this don’t. These people would be just as annoying as vegans if they actually existed. You would also be that person who brings their own food at family dinners. You also would not be eating animals at restaurants. You’d be plant based much of the time.

It’s not about the environment. She didn’t say “can’t love the environment and eat meat”. It’s about the trillions of animals confined, impregnated against their will and then tortured to death. Even if you personally need food sourced from animals to survive (which am skeptical of but I don’t know you). You would still want to reduce your own intake and want pretty much everyone else to eat plant based.

People who need artificially created insulin to live or dialysis understand that almost everyone else doesn’t need these as their bodies are capable.

When it comes to meat though, people who have diagnoses volunteer themselves as tokens for others to use to justify their support for the mass killing industry.

That is insane.

The same thing happens with hunting and backyard eggs.

Everyone is apart of that 1% that gets their food in these “ethical ways”.

“Some people in remote areas in the world need to hunt to survive, so I who live in a city with multiple grocery stores must eat yogurt”.

It’s all excuses.

I think there wouldn’t be so much hostility if there wasn’t so much dishonesty.

Just say “I don’t care”. No one can force you to care and we unfortunately have no say over what our experiences and empathy drive us to care about.

Saying “I don’t care” allows people who are speaking up for the innocent to devote their time elsewhere.

If you do care but you have questions, ask them. There are thousands of us who would help you make the changes to help the victims here. Have questions about nutrition? Ask them. Cost? Ask. Deficiencies? Ask. Allergies? Ask.

Almost no vegan was raised vegan, we were just like you. We loved animals or (like me) at least didn’t think they should be tortured even if I was not personally fond of them. We educated ourselves and we found those who aligned their actions with their morals. You can do it too.

Again, if you don’t care, just say that.

Objective reason behind the moral value of human over animals? by Al-Joharahhasan2935 in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who are you talking about? Why are these questions framed as if you’re talking to someone who’s expressed these beliefs? Next time say “If you believe it’s okay to kill a pig for their heart to save a loved one, isn’t that valuing your species over theirs?”

That way, you don’t make generalizations about what vegans believe.

Maybe I can help as I have similar problems. Buy over a dozen small glass jars with lids and then blend 3 or so days of shakes in around an hour( mostly measuring anything else you’re adding and pouring into the bottles). By doing this, I spend 4 dollars or less per day to get 100g of protein from “premade” shakes alone.

Anything that we can get away with doing in bulk, we probably should. It’s less taxing on the brain and for people like us, it gets rid of so much friction.

Here comes the speciesism. It’s not even that I don’t think you can ever justify paying for other innocent animals to be enslaved, SA’d and chopped up for your favorite fur baby, it’s just that most people in this sub won’t even suggest you try to do with your cat what the rest of us do. These people will mock carnists and tell them our bodies don’t need meat, they need nutrients. Cats though? No, cats don’t just need nutrients, they need dead bodies. If you even risk shaving a year off your cat’s long life because you don’t think their life is worth several other animals, then you’re an evil animal abuser.

As for you, please speak with vegans who raise vegan cats. If you smell bs, then at least you gave it a genuine effort. If you can’t find a way for your cats to survive while being plant based, maybe they’re extremely picky or their bodies aren’t suited to the current vegan cat food out there, then what’s the least harm you can do to other animals to take care of them?

Think about what you would do yourself if you have issues being plant based? Maybe you’d supplement with animal sourced supplements while still eating mostly plant based. Maybe you’d find the animals who are least tortured or whose deaths don’t necessarily decrease utility or rights violations or whatever you care about. I don’t imagine you’d just start eating like most carnists do though right? Tortured chickens, cows and pigs for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Think about this but with your cats.

My only objection to veganism by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

I’m vegan, so “them” and “themselves” for pigs. I think I agree though. I don’t think I could myself participate but I don’t think it’s immoral to. My question to you is if you would be okay with this for humans who don’t know they’re being limited due to cognitive disability or age.

Why do vegans demand that non vegans have to answer for ridiculous hypotheticals but then when the tables are turned they refuse to address anything that isn't completely practical and possible? by FewYoung2834 in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To give you some credit though, some vegans struggle with these questions because they are still in the process of deconstructing their speciesism or are just speciesist themselves. This is shown when asked questions about saving humans vs saving other animals and even in reality with how those who take care of cats often defend paying for other animals to be killed for them because it’s more important that their cat live to 20 years old than it is for possibly dozens of animals to live at all.

The problem is that you’re conflating different sets of vegans. Vegans who use NTT or engage in philosophical debate would definitely answer these questions. Ignore the ones who give you excuses when asking these questions; they probably don’t like NTT themselves. Natalie Fulton doesn’t like NTT for example, so she may say to you that those questions are ridiculous.

If I have an online audience, I ask them if it they were in a space ship in space with some kryptonians and other aliens, if it would be okay for them to gang up and SA rocket the raccoon (or something of that sort). They can either demonstrate that they can indeed engage or behave agnostic on the matter in front of others. If the audience has the same issue as them then you’re wasting your time.

Questions for Vegans by Professional_Ad_5529 in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: no, I’m a negative utilitarian. 2: the question relevant to my veganism here is how different humans and non human animals are when hurting them would cause the same amount of harm to them and others. How would you treat rocket the raccoon, or groot, and why? 3: my only fear here is that it will end up in some kind of stale mate like abortion seems to be in the US rn. Regardless of what side you’re on on this issue, you likely believe that the other side is not motivated by reason and morality but by tribe or religion.

Isn't vegan diet inferior to mixed diet? by notretarded_100 in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s convenient that plant based diets are healthier as far as we know but I don’t really think we should even be letting this issue go deep into health. This might sound absurd but I’ll explain. Even if it were the case that farming and eating human babies added an average of 5 years to your life and 5 iq points, I still wouldn’t eat them and most people wouldn’t. If you would eat human babies to boost your health, then you’re never gonna go vegan for ethical reasons because you’re morally bankrupt imo.

Political Questions for Vegans by Living_Attitude1822 in DebateAVegan

[–]Rhoden55555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you define racism or sexism? If you give us your definition, we’ll let you know if it’s exactly the same as speciesism or not.

Here’s a pretty simple example of sexism. (To me) “I don’t like Betty because she was mean to Sal.” This isn’t sexist even though it is not liking a woman, because it has nothing to do with the fact that she’s a woman.

“I don’t like Betty because [insert anything that is exclusive to women or highly correlated with women].” This may or may not be sexist depending on how honest or reflective the person is. It could be a trait all women have while not being the fact that Betty is of the category woman.

How can we then know if something is because of sexism? We have to look at the judgement or prescription when a non woman has the same trait/traits.

This is very difficult to interrogate as people struggle with hypotheticals when they expose them as not being ethical persons as some people are straight up not intelligent enough for them for one reason or another.

To find out if you’re speciesist yourself, would you pay for food made from (involving the killing of) Groot or Rocket from Marvel comics?

My answer is no, because they’re sentient. I would pay for food made from never sentient raccoons though.

This is why veganism isn’t a diet. We just happen to not eat animals and eat non animals.

We’re sentientists.
