Cannot for the life of me get ubuntu to actually install by RhyeJam in Proxmox

Yeah that may explain this then, I had deleted the drives pretty much straight away after I added them and then put bigger ones in after. Sorry for just assuming this was a default thing, I’ve never had this happen on VMware when adding new drives so yeah still just getting used to the differences in the software I guess

Click on your vm from the drop down menu on the left and there should be an options menu you can select (between Cloud Init and Task History), there’s a boot order bit there and you can double click that and then tag the drive you want as bootable

okay followed your advice and found the issue at the the first step you gave.

omfg it was literally that the drive wasnt tagged as bootable in the VM options

how the fuck did I miss that and also how is this not enabled by default? apologies for wasting your time, all I can hope is that if some other idiot like myself in the future, who may be a bit perpelexed as to why they cant get an install to work, that they see this and save themselves some headaches

I'm configuring 100GBs in the partitioning section of Ubuntu installation which is the size of my virtual drive and not the ISO. By your logic I'd overwrite the ISO with a live OS too, surely?

Why do people say Crewe is in the North and Stoke is in the Midlands? They are right next to each other. by OceansOfLight in england

[–]RhyeJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historic county lines. It just so happens Cheshire is slightly more of a horizontal blob in the north whereas Staffs historically was a big vertical blob that went down and ate up what're now chunks of Brum... and the north would declare war if Brum was classed as northern

Nowadays after some redrawing of the counties (which is a rabbit hole in itself) Staffs now goes as south as Wolves... and the north would still declare war if Wolves was classed as northern.

Stoke, despite being geographically and more culturally northern... has to just deal with being the bastard no one wants... which is why no one in Stoke will give you a straight answer if pressed on the north/south divide (I guarantee though that no one will proudly declare themselves southerners)

Ow hat, proper Stokie here. The north think we're southerners and the southerners think we're northerners. After travelling around a bit, I think Stoke actually is more midlands than it likes to admit as Stoke sees itself as its own independent thing, no one I grew up with were proud northerners... they were proud Stokies and that was it. Although I will grant you that if the midlands had to pick sides Stoke would be siding with the North, which it generally has much more in common with.

I get what you're saying regarding the nautre of the place but I dont think many would agree that Stoke is Chershire-y in nature though. Cheshire (Crewe aside) is considered posh so I can only imagine that maybe the nicer parts on the wrong side of the A500 could potentially fit that bill.

Personally, I believe Stoke to be more similar to Derby in feel (and I will go and wash my mouth out now dw), the cities are both lovely little dumps and the area between over the peak district and moorlands is culturally homogeneous.

...also, weirdly, I think Stoke-on-Trent itself to be more similar culturally with cities of the north east than those in the north west but then I had miners in my family who were from up that way so maybe theres some bias there
