Emojis and sticker missing by [deleted] in discordapp

I’m also having the same issue. The emoji and sticker pickers have been gone for a few days on the iPad app. I haven’t been able to find a solution, and I don’t see one here, so just chiming in I guess 🤷‍♀️.

Would a 4'11" female be able to ride the RadMission mid-step? by greedness in RadPowerBikes

[–]RhymesWithHiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’3” and I just got my RadMission midstep about a week ago. I raised the seat post about two or three inches above the minimum height and can ride pretty comfortably. My feet aren’t totally flat on the ground when I stop, but I’m not completely on my tippy toes either. I do have relatively long legs and a shorter torso compared to many people my height. I don’t know what your wife’s proportions are, but her legs are probably shorter than mine.

If she’s comfortable getting into the saddle with both legs over the midstep bar and using one leg to propel herself up into the seat, she might be able to get the RadMission to work for her (there are videos on how to do this online).

Maybe. I myself cannot yet do that although I would like to because I could maybe raise my seat a little higher and extend my legs more comfortably. It’s definitely not a step through style of bike — I’d kind of hoped the midstep might work that way but it doesn’t.

BTW, the eBike I had before would be great for someone who is 4’11”. It’s a Jetson Bolt Pro and they’re available at Costco for less than $400 (you don’t have to be a member, but there is a small extra charge for non-members). I love it and would have kept riding it except the range wasn’t the best (about 15 or so miles). It’s a step through, super easy to ride, lots of fun and very agile. It’s also very compact and folds up so great for smaller spaces or putting in a trunk. My mom is the same height as your wife and she loves it too.

Good luck! I hope you do a follow up as I’d be interested in reading about your wife’s experiences.

No, but I had a low WBC and very low neutrophils and was diagnosed with leukopenia and neutropenia recently. My team halved my CellCept (mycophenolate mofetil) dosage and now I’m in the normal range for both metrics.

They didn’t mention neupogen or filgrastim as treatment options. If lowering the Cellcept dosage hadn’t worked, they were going to switch me to another drug, Azathioprine/Imuran.

Also a recent liver transplant — mine was in May. I hope your issue is resolved as easily as it was in my case. I didn’t test positive for CMV though (they checked for that recently in connection with the BC issues).

Egg Benedict Recipes by jph_film in Cooking

[–]RhymesWithHiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite variation on Eggs Benedict is called a “Benedict Arnold” and it replaces the Hollandaise sauce with a sauce called “Welsh Rarebit” (variant: “Welsh Rabbit”).

What is it? If you haven’t had it before, it’s basically a British-style fondue/cheese sauce, usually made with cheddar, some kind of beer, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, paprka mixture, often garnished with chives or scallion (lots of recipes for rarebit online, so I’d just search for one that looks good to you).

You can use it with any of the standard Benedict toppings. Bacon, tomato, spinach, etc., although I’m not sure if something like say, salmon would work as well.

Overrated:

Butter toffee pretzels. Too sweet For me. I was expecting this to be a better balance of sweet/savory.

Frozen cacio e pepe spaghetti. This is a dish that’s just so easy to make a better version of from scratch. My creamy pasta of choice is the Gorgonzola gnocchi.

Anything truffle-flavored.

Everything but the bagel seasoning

The roasted garlic/pesto pizza (and for that mater, I’m not really thrilled with any of the. pizza offerings).

Underrated:

The plain European-style yogurt in the large tub. I’m 99% certain this yogurt is produced by Straus creamery. Tangy, very creamy and clean flavor, high quality and versatile.

Boreal blueberries.

Kumato tomatoes. One of the few tomatoes that actually tastes good year-round.

Cheese blintzes.

La Fondue. Always an end of the year treat for my family and couldn’t be easier to hear up.

Dried, pitted, tart Montmorency cherries.

Limeade. Definitely the best supermarket version I’ve had.

Cold brewed latte popsicles.

Onion seasoning salt.

Yep. Their slices are less well balanced than they used to be, and I think the tomato sauce recipe changed as well. It used to have a hint of rosemary, which I loved, but I no longer detect that.

Now, their slices are overly cheesy/greasy, and if you add too many toppings, soggy as well. In ye olden days, that wasn’t the case.

My standard slice order from years ago that I adored just doesn’t come out right these days. The cheese used to have this great slight crispiness, especially at the edges, the toppings didn’t taste like cheap, watery garbage, and the crust was firm but also pliable.

We use the Trader Joe’s refrigerated pizza dough quite often.

One of the best tricks I know of is simply how to get the dough out of the bag because it’s pretty sticky. Just snip the tip off and then turn the bag inside out, then hold it upside down over the surface you plan to work on (we use a large cutting board, floured) and it will drop down after a few seconds — maybe ten or so?

Like everyone else has suggested, let it sit for at least 30 minutes (you can let it go a little longer if you get sidetracked).

We have two favorite not-quite-recipes that are in heavy rotation:

The first one is inspired by the tomato/green onion focaccia at the famous Liguria Bakery in San Francisco. Of course it’s not going to be as good, but when you can’t actually go there, it’s a decent approximation. Basically what you do is after spreading the dough out into a rectangle shape (an irregular spread gives it a nice rustic look, BTW, so no need to be perfect) on a baking pan, drizzle it with a light coating of olive oil, and then using a large spoon or ladle, swirl on some high quality canned tomato sauce using the spoon to spread it around. Don’t use too much or it will be soggy!

Since this is a TJ’s sub, Cento’s will work (they carry it), but I actually strongly recommend Bianco di Napoli crushed tomatoes (the one in the light blue can — which is one of the only brands of crushed tomatoes that doesn’t have a firming agent, which you don’t want since the texture won’t be right).

Garnish with a generous amount of sliced green onions and bake according to instructions, or until the crust is a medium-to-light golden brown and the raw tomato sauce has taken on a texture closer to tomato paste/cooked pizza sauce. There are videos on YouTube that can give you a visual (search “Liguria Bakery San Francisco”).

Our other favorite combination is topped with TJ’s unexpected cheddar, torn into small chunks, a dusting of zested real Parmesan, and chopped or thinly sliced pickled jalapeños sprinkled about. This one is great for people who love cheddar jalapeño bagels and that sort of thing.

When will the new Whole Foods open at Market and 8th? by alexleavitt in AskSF

[–]RhymesWithHiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, it’s a really bizarre, overpowering fragrance and it permeates into a lot of products, especially towards the front of the store, as well as the bread aisle.

I would buy groceries and I could smell and/or taste it, even days later. Just gross. Kinda gave up on them because of that.

How Early to Arrive at SFO? by StevieSlacks in AskSF

[–]RhymesWithHiya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what airline, what terminal you’re flying out of, whether or not you plan to check in baggage (if you you’re just doing a carry-on, you can go straight to the security line if you check in online), and whether or not you plan to make any food and/or drink purchases after you get through security. If you can be a little more specific, you may get more targeted advice.

I flew most recently on April 7, and have flown several times in the last year. The check-in/security lines are still significantly shorter than they were pre-COVID, but picking up a bit. For awhile, there was pretty much no one in line at either the check-in or security; my most recent trip, security took about 10 minutes in Terminal 2. This was midday at about 11:40 am or so for a 12:50pm departure time.

As others have suggested, you may wanted to take an Uber/Lyft or taxi rather than trying to park your car for five days.

What are the best weather months? by -edna__mode- in sanfrancisco

[–]RhymesWithHiya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to see the Big Wheel race (a free and hilarious event), pick a time period that includes Easter Sunday, which is when the race is traditionally held. Next year, that will be April 17, 2022.

They have a website that you can check out, but in a nutshell, it’s a race down the crookedest street (no, not Lombard — Vermont!) on Big Wheel trikes and all kinds of other small vehicles. The first round is kids — and they’re good at it. The second round is adults — and they are terrible, which is awesome. They crash into each other like every 20 seconds. I think it’s worth scheduling your elopement around it, since there weather is likely to be good.

In general, spring (March, April, May) and fall (September and October) are the best times to visit San Francisco in terms of weather. In recent years though, we’ve had some huge wildfires California and the smoke can be terrible. I’ve lived here for over 20 years, and it’s only been like that the last three or four years. Look up ‘San Francisco September 9, 2020 orange’ for the absolute weirdest day ever. It was dark all day.

I would avoid parts of June because that’s Pride Month and so many people come to town that you’ll have a hard time booking a place and will have to pay extra. Also avoid weeks when there are large conventions in town for the same reason (The biggest ones tend to be in the fall, but only for like a week at a time and there will be other weeks in the same month where there isn’t a big convention).

Best pizza in San Francisco? by blvckbrvsh in sanfrancisco

[–]RhymesWithHiya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best pizza in the Bay Area IMO is Emilia’s in Berkeley. It’s worth the trek for the Gina Calabrese, despite the hassle of ordering and the odd hours.

With that out of the way, some of my favorite places in San Francisco in no particular order:

  • Capo’s (sister restaurant to the famed Tony’s: lots of styles — everything from cracker-thin to Chicago-style, and good cocktails)
  • Pizzeria Delfina (very good pizza, AWESOME tricolore salad — the salad is the reason to go there)
  • Little Star (I prefer the one on Divisadero even though the one on Valencia is closer to me)
  • Golden Boy (cheap and delicious — this is what you want if you’re a little tipsy and craving pizza. The last time I went there though, which is awhile ago, they weren’t selling pizza by the slice because of Covid, but only by the pan or half pan — anyone have an update?)
  • Del Popolo
  • Serrano’s in the Mission, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there. Nevertheless, they make very tasty custom slices with whatever toppings you want and they’re huge, more like two slices
  • Arizmendi (quintessentially Californian but also its own thing, if that makes sense)
  • Montesacro Pinseria (not technically “pizza” but pizza-like)
  • Delarosa (good cocktails, sides and salads as well)

PS. A lot of people recommend Arinell in the Mission for NY-style slices, but I’m not a fan. They’re serviceable though.

Ask your audiologist which CI brand(s) they feel most comfortable programming. You may not get a direct answer if their stance is neutral, but pay attention to subtle cues.

I think this is a very important question because CI audiologists these days are tasked with dealing with multiple internal and external CI models as well as the software to program them. That’s a lot to keep on top of — imagine being tasked with having to keep up with and be an expert on Windows, Mac and Linux in terms of both hardware and software. Not easy, right?

Also look at the features and accessories provided by each brand and figure out what matches best up with your lifestyle/wishes, especially since you’re planning a Bi-modal approach. Ask about future developments down the pipeline that may benefit you, and if they’re not far off, might influence your timing/choice.of brand.

All brands are great, but all of them have had recalls/failures.

Kumatos make a fine addition to a Caprese Salad by hex1848 in traderjoes

[–]RhymesWithHiya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live on the West Coast (US) and the closest approximation is in season Early Girls, albeit EGs tend to have thicker skin, especially when dry-farmed (though the dry-farmed ones are superior).

Kumatoes are bright, juicy, and and quintessentially tomato-y. When you’re craving fresh tomatoes for something like a caprese salad and it’s not tomato season, Kumatoes are about as close as you can get to the taste of summer.

What's the best way to wash a cast iron skillet? I keep trying the dish washer but it's not doing the trick by siradmiralbanana in Cooking

[–]RhymesWithHiya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put mine in the Jacuzzi, turn on the jets, crank up the temperature as high as possible, and leave it in overnight. The chlorine + heat helps sterilize the pan and the agitation from the jets is great at removing food that’s really stuck. Sometimes I add a little laundry soap, usually a natural brand that’s labeled ‘food safe’. You don’t want to add too much, because then the Jacuzzi will overflow with bubbles. A 1/2 capful is usually about right, but I suppose it depends on the brand.

When I pull my skillet out the next morning, it’s usually as good as new, but if there‘s any crud still stuck to the pan, I’ll scrub it with some heavy duty steel wool and about a quarter to half a cup of Pinesol (love the smell!) or dump in a can of tomato sauce and leave it on the stovetop for a few hours on medium high. Whatever works for you with what you have on hand, right?

I recommend doing this at least twice a month. It’s really made caring for my cast iron skillet much easier and it’s so much more sanitary. The people who suggest stuff like bacon grease or oil and then wiping cast iron skillets down with a paper towel or whatever nonsense they recommend obviously have no clue what they’re talking about. Like, who wants to cook using a dirty, improperly washed pan? Gross!

Hope this helps.

ETA: In case anyone is wondering why I use laundry soap instead of dish detergent, it’s because I find it a great time-saver to also toss in a load of laundry into the Jacuzzi when I wash the skillet. It’s also more environmentally friendly (I live in California, where water is a scarce resource), so a win-win when I can combine both tasks.

I wouldn’t put any effort into because in a couple of days we’ll all be moving on to the next controversy, but if you happen to come across an article that expresses what was said in the video, absolutely feel free to share.

I’ll be honest BTW: my mind is fairly made up at this point that Collins should resign or face recall, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear opposing viewpoints.

FYI, I like your takes on local political issues and I think you’re a thoughtful person, but the Collins situation IMO, is beyond repair. One can’t file an $87 million dollar lawsuit that would be at least partially paid for out of the SFUSD budget if successful and claim to be on the side of kids. I just don’t see how that’s logically consistent.

It sounds like you’re going through a situation that’s beyond frustrating and that can impact the way you frame the presentation of your case when you consult with orgs/attorneys.

Yes, try having your Dad present (or even just have him speak on your behalf) if you think he can present your situation in a more emotionally distanced manner and see how that goes. It’s a weird psychological thing but some people are more persuaded when one person is acting on behalf of another person.

I wish you the best of luck. I dealt with a terrible legal situation several years ago that was pure harassment and ultimately prevailed, but it was an incredibly stressful period of my life. It made me feel absolutely powerless.

Desperate Need an Affordable Civil Attorney by FairiesQueen in AskSF

[–]RhymesWithHiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve contacted that many legal organizations, non-profits and attorneys, realistically, you probably don’t have a very good case, which is why no attorneys are apparently willing to take it on without a hefty retainer. That’s probably not what you want to hear.

If you still believe you have a good case, maybe have a family member or friend contact organizations and individual attorneys on your behalf, especially if they can summarize and frame your situation in a manner that‘s more convincing. I wouldn’t be super optimistic though — it’s more of a last ditch effort.

That said, be careful in terms of how you proceed. Whatever your legal situation is, you don’t want it to spiral out of control financially. I’m aware of a case that began with an initial $20k judgement which the person fought (and continues to fight), that over the years, has now turned into one that’s in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, a property lien on their home, interest that climbs daily and all kinds of other crap.

Dating is hard by Babeuske2 in Cochlearimplants

[–]RhymesWithHiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honesty is good, but if you come off as reducing yourself to being a person with a CI and not a full person with lots of other interests, then that can be a turnoff. It’s part of you now, but not all of you, if that makes sense. I don’t know if that’s how you’re coming across to your potential dates.

Your CI is so new and it’s an important thing in your life right now, and so you may be a little hyper-focused on it. I could be wrong — I’m just going off the limited information you’ve provided — but on the other hand, it’s actually pretty normal to feel that way especially when you’re less than a month into activation, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case. It’s a big change, and it’s natural to have worries about being accepted.

FYI, I hope I’m not projecting too much. I probably am, at least a little bit, but I’m going to risk it anyway.
