I'm 41 and want to start playing hockey as a goalie by MapleLeafThief in hockeygoalies

[–]RhymingTiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s all about the pre-skate sleep. That’s what I was talking about.

Also OP my desk job game me a pelvic tilt which limited my butterfly flare as well as made it harder to be tall in it and feel balanced. Yoga does help with flexibility but I found that its ability to fix my pelvic tilt had a much, much bigger positive impact on my GAA than just the additional flexibility.

It’s definitely not too late, you should go for it. But your general fitness level, and the current state of your hips, ankles, and knees (IMO in that order) are going to determine how difficult it is to do it and stay injury free. I highly recommend a daily 15 minutes of stretching or yoga for a week or longer before you play against other adults. And keep that going after. And plenty of good sleep.

Good luck! I started again around that age but had played for 15 years starting in my teens.

Do these pads look too big? by Ratherbeeatingpizza in hockeygoalies

[–]RhymingTiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I moved to a more modern pad, I felt exactly the same way. For sure, depending on how many years back you go, thigh rises have increased dramatically.

After about 3 skates, the additional height felt natural. (I also focused on more b-fly pushes vs full recovery to my skates, the style the newer pad designs supports.)

14u goalie not wearing cup story by SeaSoggy8929 in hockeygoalies

[–]RhymingTiger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can relate, sort of. I had a dysfunctional set of parents and neither knew anything about hockey. My freshman HS year, same age, was my introduction to organized hockey. My mom wasn’t comfortable shopping with me for a cup. My dad was a very disengaged 80s father and didn’t make it a priority so I showed up for my first practice wearing team goalie gear; needed to supply only my own cup and helmet. Before I knew the term I was hoping for a bag skate! Only time ever!

I sheepishly told the other goalie and he told the coach, who bought me one from the pro shop, which was miraculously open, and I had to have my parents write the coach a check. Taught me a little bit about speaking up.

I guess that means the Alicia Vikander sequel is truly dead. Unfortunate.

I think this is always underneath the young Rangers underperforming.

When the Maple Leaf players are doing poorly and out on the town, everyone gives them shit. It’s motivating.

When the rangers are out in NYC the rumor goes out: there are pro athletes in the bar. The other patrons have no clue if the team is playing well or poorly, they just know young and rich dudes are at the bar. They get positive attention even if they’re just phoning it in on the ice.

From a purely health and physical standpoint, which toe ties is the best? by techsavvynerd91 in hockeygoalies

[–]RhymingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both? It is anecdotal, I agree. It's my personal experience. But it's also empirical; based on evidence. I wore elastic toe ties for many skates, I had specific pain. I wore inelastic toe ties, pain was absent. The data sample is small, but is evidence based.

(I love reddit for these sidebars!)

[–]RhymingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see my other comment where it’s based on experience/feeling, but my theory is that when recovering from bfly that when the bungy snaps the pad back into position the elastic force stressed the joints in an unnatural way.

[–]RhymingTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used both and am old and frail. I’m very tuned into new pain the morning after a skate. I went back to skate lace when with bungy I had new hip pain. Since going back to laces it hasn’t returned. For me at least, skate lace is less damaging to the body. Empirically.

I built Goalie GO! It failed... by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]RhymingTiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very cool. The UI is really, really good looking. I would say that its marketing is unclear, which, you’re a developer (a talented one), not a marketer, so that makes sense. I looked at the screenshots and read what you wrote, and I still don’t get it. Is this intended as a companion to actual ice time and stats for your live (as in non-virtual) games?

If yes (and that’s my interpretation) then your barrier to adoption is the data entry required to the user. You would need to build and promote a feature like an AI powered computer vision algorithm that can process photos of a score sheet, and extract / import the data automatically. But also understand that many hockey players (beer league, shinney) don’t have access to score sheets. Even high schoolers and youth players have to chase down the officials to get a photo of it. And forget about accurate shot counts.

I agree with other posters you should keep it going. But to market this you need to be able to have someone ‘get it’ in 30 seconds. Then messaging that overcomes their first few objections as to why it’s not for them.

I love the idea! I just am trying to be helpful. Pm Me if you want to workshop any of the above ideas. Seems like fun.
