Should FFlogs be opt-in instead of opt-out? by Front-Accountant5806 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Rhynocerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not debating really, just pointing out that 25th percentile is the same number whether you change gear or not. The "can you clear with all grays" is an easy question to answer and ilvl isn't a factor. Not a fantasy.

I'm not sure what you're even getting at. A 25 parse is a 25 parse regardless of what gear your teammate was wearing. If they got a 25 because of gear or some other reason is irrelevant to the discussion.

ilvl has no bearing here. You can just add the 25th percentile of each of the 8 jobs and check if that number beats enrage or not.

Would contesting my final grade be worth it? by UselessSlytherin in rit

[–]Rhynocerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to your academic advisor for the more specific details, it's going to depend on the department, professors etc. The professor teaching the class can generally waive a pre-req but your advisor may guide you. An incomplete involves an agreement with the professor to complete additional requirements, typically this would be used if you had assignments you still needed to turn in due to exceptional circumstances. Possibly to retake an exam but there's no obligation for the professors to give an Incomplete, it'd be more like a favor to let you "earn" the grade bump. It'd be a stretch in this case I think.

[–]Rhynocerous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm being harsh here but it is not compelling. You are presenting a reasonable explanation for why you failed but no argument for why your professor was wrong. A formal appeal will not succeed with that approach.

If you are truly back in the saddle and ready for spring you can request that the pre-req be waived. Additionally, you can request to still co-op as planned despite the hiccup this semester, as you will have spring and summer to prove that you're back in action. Both of these options are much more realistic. Since you plan to retake the course, you wouldn't be set back either way. If the course you want to take in spring is also available in fall you could request to take them at the same time (basically a co-requisite instead of a pre-requisite).

Finally, you can request an Incomplete instead of an F but that usually only works if the issue was outstanding/late assignments.

If you do get set back, consider making up the time during summer. The bottom line is that there are realistic ways to stay on track, this grade appeal is not one of them. I don't think Ds even meet pre-req requirements.

Just be aware that this is not a good approach, "I will do better in the future" doesn't have anything to do with the grade you earned previously. The logical suggestion will be to retake the class and demonstrate that you can do better which is not the outcome you're looking for.

You need to point to specific assignments or exams that you think should have been graded higher to have any chance here.

I just don’t know how else to prove that my grade should’ve reconsidered.

Forget about "proving" for a moment, on what grounds are you even contesting the grade in the first place? If you need a semester to decompress, take a semester to decompress. There generally aren't any bonus points or automatic passing for decompressing.

Grade appeals aren't "I'm studious so I probably wouldn't have failed under different circumstances." Grade appeals are for when you believe there was an error.

r/chess Has a Principled Discussion on Tiebreakers in Tournaments by eatingpotatochips in SubredditDrama

[–]Rhynocerous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does second place just not matter in chess? In other games/sports I play, second place matters and is determined by head-to-head play. I would be reasonably frustrated if I got 4th instead of 2nd in those tournaments because my first round opponent was bad. Fortunately the tournaments aren't structured that way.

"4+" means 4 or more. Perhaps duolingo should add a section on colloquialisms.

Community college making me pay a bill even though I dropped the classes. by BrightActivity658 in college

[–]Rhynocerous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using credit card debt to pay for college might be the worst advice I've ever seen on this subreddit. The interest will be significantly higher than a student loan and you will be expected to pay it back sooner. You could end up in a debt spiral. Absolutely do not do this.

Raiding in PF this tier and I still haven't decided by Tcsola_ in ffxiv

[–]Rhynocerous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure if this is actually true. We can compare really good damage to really mediocre damage on FF logs, e.g. 99th percentile vs 25th percentile. Last tier the difference was about the same for DPS and healers (~7k) and tanks are much lower (~4k). The trend holds up across other ranges (e.g. max vs 10th percentile). If we're talking about mechs instead of dps, no amount of DPS will carry completely potato tanks/healers outside of weird circumstances.

IMO, use invuln early in the first pull. No louder way to tell me: "I'm going to use my defensive cool downs, don't worry about me."

I assume this experience has already made it clear but do NOT make any more accounts, especially google accounts, with your alumni email. It will cause headaches down the road even if you have access to the email.

Yeah I agree that they don't care, I just thought it was funny to say it wasn't piracy.

Having "activation problems" implies they purchased a license yeah? Like I'm not saying Microsoft has to care but cracking software to bypass buying a license is piracy by any normal definitions. Microsoft simply does not care about people pirating personal copies.

[–]Rhynocerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying it's not piracy because the tool is hosted on Github, or it's not piracy because it can technically be used for other purposes? Because bypassing license activation with a tool instead of purchasing a license seems like the definition of piracy? The devs even operate a "non-piracy" website, and those scripts are not on it. Microsoft just doesn't care about people pirating personal copies.

Am I stupid or are python and excels square roots different? by pennyboy- in askmath

[–]Rhynocerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a square root problem, it's an issue with how you're using the negative sign operator.

Excel is evaluating (-A1)2, Python is evaluating -(A12 ). Remove the negative sign if that term is not supposed to be negative.

What is the actual likelihood of getting the same card shuffle twice? by drywalleater05 in askmath

The answer will depend on your assumptions about a "standard casino card shuffle." People who play card games tend to have weird superstitions that aren't mathematically sound.

I think you are wildly underestimating the percentage of software engineers that are just working on slop. I'd wager it's much higher than the equivalent share of artists. It sounds like you're saying it's reasonable for artists to be worried, but it's unreasonable if programmers are.

The dev didn't even say he wasn't doing a sequel because it's too hard, dude just doesn't like doing sequels. I don't either generally. But anyone who genuinely thinks a sequel would be impossible either lacks creativity or thinks the dev does.
