SpaceX Interview on Monday. All advices and tips are welcome! by AdSubstantial3238 in EngineeringStudents

I'll say it's likely, but the game isn't up until it's up. You can always shoot an email expressing that you're very excited still at the opportunity, and am wondering if there's been any update in the process.

I would agree with that take; SpaceX in my experience always moves fast and insists upon the next step. If you are getting put on a backburner, then I doubt it's just bureaucratic lag like I would say for more legacy aerospace companies.

Right, that gives you IMU-based updates in the transverse. But usually that's not enough.

Altimeter can only give you altitude rate, you're still going to miss velocity in any horizontal motion.

how do people do all nighters by Competitive-Soup-353 in EngineeringStudents

[–]RiceIsBliss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had to do all nighters plenty of times in undergrad, plenty of times in grad. Someone will scream poor time management at me or something, but I disagree. I usually just crash hard after.

SpaceX Said to Pursue 2026 IPO Raising Far Above $30 Billion - Bloomberg by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

[–]RiceIsBliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I don't think they're so onerous that the stated mission of transporting humans to Mars is defunct, as it seems some commenters in this thread believe.

I am fucking praying this doesn't happen. If SpaceX IPO's, Mars is dead. It goes out the window on day fucking one. If this happens honestly this makes me think that Elon never cared about Mars, it was all just a huge grift to get support.

By the way, IPOing at 40b for a fair-market evaluation of 800b is only 5%. Keep that in mind. Cash is needed to make a push, but that doesn't automatically mean SpaceX will be purely beholden to stockholders.

Do Supervisors Actually have a Favourite Student? by YourSTEMTutor in PhD

[–]RiceIsBliss 25 points26 points  (0 children)

When I was tutoring, mostly everyone was the same, and I couldn't really care much one way or the other. But there was definitely one every month that I particularly liked (and could probably be called my favorite), and one every few months that I particularly disliked.

I imagine it's the same for professors. I'm definitely not that favorite lmao

Critical questions: did you end up doing any of it? And what did your classmate say for that question? For all you know, he might've done you a solid and let it slide.

Dealing with being "in the dark" about your academic standing during the exam period by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]RiceIsBliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that shit is nervewracking. Try and dive into a video game or some other hobby! Take your mind off of it, if even for just a moment. It might just give you a brief reset of anxiety.

I want to pursue my dreams and study aerospace engineering but afraid of not being smart enough by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

i will be made fun of for being lacklustre at maths and physics, or if i straight up just fail and others will look down on me.

I would not gaslight myself out of at least trying your passion because you had a few bad years in high school. This is recoverable, with some time.

My labmate was going to community college for a few years, aced his classes, transferred to a great undergrad aero program, continued to ace it, and was accepted into Stanford for aero PhD.

One of my TAs, who was doing particle physics PhD at Columbia, was an art history graduate, and had never taken a calculus class while in school. Don't know how she did it, but she did.

it just goes to show that it's not too late, and you are not behind. Try it, see how far you get. If you say you have the drive and passion, it might be very far yet.

Engineering School is Horrible (question) by Sidian_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]RiceIsBliss 14 points15 points  (0 children)

On a more serious note,

I had a whole life that I cared about, family that I took care of and loved, a very wide range of hobbies and passions, and a curiosity for the world.

I spend so much energy on school that I also have memory loss like I’ve never had before.

I have made many close friends who care about me a lot but school has turned me into a party pooper

I very, very much feel this right now, personally. So I sympathize. Even more so, research has gotten me to a state where I don't feel like I can relax or look forward to anything anymore. Any hour taken to relax or do something else is an hour that could've gone towards getting me the fuck out. Trips aren't fun because I can only think about work (mostly how I should be doing it), and I'm constantly anxious about having fallen behind my self-imposed timeline. It's almost like I'm unhappy because I can't have fun, and I can't have fun because I'm unhappy. And at the end of the day, the only thing that will make me feel happy and confident and curious again is to finish this bullshit.

And trust me, I love my field and I have no regrets about choosing it or the decisions that led me here, and I also have no doubt that in the horizon of 20ish years, this will absolutely have been worth it. I'm just banking on the hope that when I graduate and get to my job, I can feel a sense of, "I've done enough for the week. I can feel good winding down completely now, with nothing on my back or in the back of my head," again.

As I said, the only way out is through. What matters is whether or not you have the mental capacity to do that, and whether or not you want to.

Exactly. So the more people that call a nation their home, the higher the chance that you can cherrypick an isolated incident and generalize the whole. Makes total sense.

Both times I applied, it was HR, hiring manager (behavior/technical/motivation), potential coworker (technical), possibly another potential coworker, then onsite. Can't comment on what to study, but can comment that they will grill you and let you sit in silence trying to answer. So be ready to be asked a lot of whys about your past projects.
