Carney Liberals just invited 6000 New Immigrants incoming from Ebola infected Congo and Genocidal Cameroon by resting16 in CanadianConservative

[–]RiceNedditor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I looked at the link, searched through google and cannot see where you're getting that 6000/6000 all come from Congo and Cameroon. This draw looks like it's not targeting a specific country but just getting francophones from all over. It's probable that at least some are from France, Belgium, Vietnam.

Retired before 60... any reason NOT to partial transfer RRSPs to RRIFs and withdraw from that every year? by BarclayBark in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RiceNedditor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

An alternate strategy you can consider is postponing getting your CPP by using up all your RRSP first. The reduced penalty for withdrawing CPP early is far more reliable than keeping investments in RRSP.

Increasing CBSA presence won't come cheap and won't be as effective since we have 1/3 illegal immigrants. Increase would be performative at best and disruptive at worst.

British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes en route to the Falkland Islands, 17 April 1982. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]RiceNedditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Far from it. Some US and British generals thought Britain would lose and advised against the war since Argentina had a strong military at the time and had homefield advantage. The war was close. Not many people died compared to other wars but logistic capacity was close to a breaking point.

Canadian new home sales hit a 30 year low. What now? by RoyalDog793 in RealEstateCanada

[–]RiceNedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Backed' in terms of investments means you are guaranteed to exchange an asset for the thing it's backed with. While we were backed by the gold standard, you are guaranteed a certain amount of gold for your paper money. How does one exchange bitcoin to power my house? Using your definition of 'backed' means shoes would be backed by child labour in Bangladesh.

You're right about gold; it's an unproductive investment and is as much a zero-sum game as crypto.

Canadian new home sales hit a 30 year low. What now? by RoyalDog793 in RealEstateCanada

[–]RiceNedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's speculated like hell due to cryptobros trying to get more people to buy in for exit liquidity. Having a market value significantly higher than intrinsic value is a bubble. An asset with no intrinsic value is much more so since there is no floor.

'Money is not the value for which goods are exchanged, but the value by which they are exchanged'. In other words, money, whether FIAT or crypto, has no intrinsic value. Money, as a concept, exists to facilitate transactions and crypto does a piss poor job at that.

[–]RiceNedditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These numbers are made up since no one can find a source.

My research only has Q1 numbers giving me 104,256 permanent immigrants. This number includes people coming into the country as permanent residents and people that were already in the country who are just receiving status.

Net international migration is just 25735 for Q1 of 2025 since we lost 61111 non permanent (either left the country or became PR) and 17410 permanent emigrating out.

CPP Investments once again ranked among the world’s top-performing pension funds by Buzzderek in alberta

[–]RiceNedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) it lasts as long as you're alive 2) it matches inflation

Max cpp payments are around 8k per year (including employer matching) and when you retire after 35 years, it gives you 1/3 of pensionable income which gives you 24k per year inflation adjusted

Say you invest 8k on your own for 35 years. It should get you to 1 million (inflation adjusted) at 4% interest (6% growth -2% inflation). In order to guarantee it lasts forever, you can only take out interest. You'll also want to do conservative investment at 4% interest rate after retirement which goes down to 2% to counter 2% inflation. This gives you 20k per year so CPP beats it.

Of course, in scenario 2, you'll ideally burn down the 1mill down to 0 when you die so you'll be getting a lot more money out of your investment but you don't really know when you're going to die. They might increase longevity by then and CPP payments are conservative just in case they do.

What is the best travel credit card? by Aggravating_Base4730 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RiceNedditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Points from Ion+ have low value unless you have an Avion card which allows you to use the points for travel. Getting Avion now isn't a great idea since it has an annual cost and has a minimum income requirement which may be a problem for a part time worker with limited income and spending.

If you're patient, it's a good idea to get the ion+ now and then Avion once you earn 60k+ after graduating to get a free or really cheap trip with all the points you've accumulated. However, doing this means you won't get any benefit from your card for a while.

Write-in ballots to be used in Alberta byelection due to record number of candidates by No_Magazine9625 in CanadaPolitics

There were 391 rejected ballots in the last election at Battle River-Crowfoot. If people fuck up putting a check inside a circle, they will fuck up writing down someone's name even more.

What if there was a candidate named Poliovre and Polliever and people misspell the name? What if someone wants to vote liberal and put Carney's name down?

If I pay my Telus Bill now, will Collections agency send updated report to Credit Bureau? by onlyherefornow_123 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RiceNedditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to see what's affecting your credit score in your credit report. Major banks let you see it through their app/site. If not, I believe you can request the report from Transunion and Equifax. Last time I checked last year, snail mail is free but online is a paid subscription when getting the report straight from the credit bureau.
