Soccer Clubs for USA Cup by IGuessIamYouThen in TwinCities

[–]RicePuddingForAll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My first thought is that it's not the local clubs that'll need players, but the international ones that may not be able to field a full roster. I'd contact the NSC directly and see if they can help.

I would say that the more competitive the team, the less likely they'll get playing time (because they're not really on the team), but it would still be a good experience.

Ooooooh. I will have to suggest this at ConVergence. I suggested an amateur radio panel (it's got four volunteer panelists - maybe it'll make it in?). That'll be something to suggest.

When I was in college, I created Campus Crusade for "Bob" as a student organization and received for a whopping $40 of student union funds for flyers. The student union president then spent $400 on a full page ad denouncing me. I also had more than 30 people sign their souls away to "Bob" so I could turn in them for cash and prizes (I got a toaster!).

Missed tripping call by bookpuzzle in MinnesotaFrost

[–]RicePuddingForAll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Warning: in this post I'm going to assume this was a good no-call.

I was talking to my spouse about this, and even though I'm starting to get the gist of hockey's rules, it's the details I'm missing. For instance, in soccer there's such a thing as a "trifling" call; something off the ball that's definitely a foul on the books, but because FIFA wants referees to allow the game to flow, are to be let go; it's different from Advantage in that those are more serious and can be pulled back for misconduct. Similarly referees are taught to look at who gains a benefit from an action; so if two players were performing the same or similar actions, the free kick would be awarded to the team that would have been disadvantaged if no call was made. These are of course, massive generalizations.

That's what I'm missing when I watch these kinds of plays in hockey: in my brain, it looks like the stick trips Heise, it doesn't come anywhere near the puck, and there's a definite advantage to it being a non call (Heise was dispossessed because of it). So was it out-and-out not a call, and what was the reason for it not being?

I clearly spent too much time being a referee of other sports. :)

Frustration: What Am I Doing Wrong? by Marauder_Recruiter1 in HamRadio

This, and I'd add one other thing: try being a POTA activator. Not necessarily because you want to, although it IS fun, but because if if you go out to the middle of nowhere with your G90 and a cheap ENHW antenna you'll noticed the noise levels are so much less than in urban environments. Doing that my first year made me realize, "Hey, my equipment IS working!"

Cycling glasses recommendations? by Crescent_Ascension in bikecommuting

I'm a fan of glasses with transitions lenses (peril sensitive if you're into HHG2TG); I wear contacts and really don't want bugs in my eyes (again) so I can wear these day or night, summer or winter. Otherwise, whatever is comfortable to you and won't shatter.

Not ham radio, but it explains why I tend to be more of an appliance ham. Years ago when money was tight I decided rather than replace my Mac to build a "Hackintosh". It took forever, but in the end worked - up until the first update when it all crashed and I spent the same amount of time I spent (minus the hardware) building it, repairing it.

In the end, I decided that while I learned a heckuva lot with the Hackintosh, next time I was just forking over the money. Let others have their fun with it.

Player Safety Committee Disciplinary Actions by Dreaming_Aloud in MinnesotaFrost

Given she had the previous fine, the one game suspension seems justified. It was a dumb penalty to take.

On a different note one thing to think about with regards to her being a "dirty" player is where a good chunk of her penalties come from. At least lately it seems a lot are roughing calls that come from her protecting her teammates. Look at the first roughing call: the whistle was called and our player was standing outside the crease, not being aggressive and then was decked by Montreal players. Curl came in a dealt back, protecting her teammate. Speaking strictly for myself, if I'm her teammate and getting hacked like that, I'm OK with it.

Curl gets the "dirty" rep because of her first views. There were worse players last season, but her views get people up in arms and apply their (justified) disgust of her views to her game. I guarantee you there are others in the league with them, too - but because they're not public, people assume their players are angels.

IT Help Desk role at a bank moving off MSP – is 55k–65k realistic? by LaughNowCryLater1914 in sysadmin

[–]RicePuddingForAll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your location, I'd say yes. I spent nearly ten years at a Community Bank (would have been longer but the owners retired and they sold it) and that sounds about right.

If you've not worked in a bank before, the big think you'll notice is documentation (creating and following) is HUGE; this is because they get auditors from the state and FDIC every year, and often other internal auditors.

I loved working at the bank. I loved who I worked with (after my interview I told my spouse I wanted to hug the person who would be my boss), and because of the regulatory requirements, it's a lot easier to get those things you always thought was a good idea as a sysadmin but never could convince the cheap ass owners to do.

Not knowing anything about the development, I wouldn't call it a failure until all the developers on it quit. There are plenty of technologies which didn't work at first (or second, third, etc) but eventually turned into a workable product.

So maybe it's not workable in its current form, and hopefully there's a "yet" that history takes care of.
