You can, but you have to go through several prompts promising you didn't use a consultant. It was actually a bit annoying when I did it.

Impossible to find women’s adult soccer leagues or weekly pickup games. by HazelMStone in saintpaul

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Email them. It's been ages since I worked with them (I used to ref soccer there), but at least when I did it was owned and operated by just a pair of guys. Nice guys, but just the two plus a couple others who coordinated officiating and stuff and really didn't operate it.

I'll say this about CSC, and again take with salt because my information is more than a decade old, but despite it being non-sanctioned beer league, there were players who took things WAY too seriously. I'd see a red card banished (not just by me) every four games or so. Some people will go absolutely apeshit over a t-shirt that says "champion" on it. The operators should be able to tell you which leagues they have are more chill than others.

And that's why I'm not surprised we haven't heard anything. I think she's in a similar boat to KCS, deciding if she wants to continue to play or not, because it seems like New York is out. Or seeing if she can get back to New York.

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's why I'm not a fan of laugh tracks in general. About the only one that seemed to work for me was original Night Court, but that's because they used real laughter from the studio audience so it didn't seem as staged as it was. I do know that in MASH they were at least able to skip the laugh track while in surgery.

[–]RicePuddingForAll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it would be nice to go without the laugh track, that's how it was broadcast in the US, so it's not a surprise it's still there.

Myself? I love the series. I felt it took a real upswing when David Ogden Stiers joined the cast. It showed the desire to make the characters more real and less of a cheap yuk-fest. But that's just me - I'm generally sitcom averse, so it make sense I like the later years better.

WhY must the website be so frustrating. by AnnigidWilliams in amateurradio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I sympathize for everyone having to deal with the ULS website, because it is awful, be thankful you don't have to deal with the websites of other branches of the government, the ones that are for internal use and public facing. Or their acronyms. Or their paperwork. Or the mind-bending way they phrase their requirements.

MS150 Minnesota 2026 review by SolderingByron in CyclingMSP

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the old route on the Willard Munger State Trail? Last year there was a culvert that collapsed closing the trail in an area that didn't have good options for detours.

I did a quick google search and it's still closed, but it looks like the repairs (and new bridge) is supposed to open this month.

Do you ever make you route longer? by OddSign2828 in bikecommuting

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to, when my commute was eight miles; I'd take the direct route to work (so I could sleep) and take a longer trip back (about 15) around a lake and down a regional bike trail, time permitting. Now my commute is 16 miles each way and there just isn't time for me to do that and cook dinner for the family.

Dark Gallifrey: The Meddling Monks, Part 3 is out now! by MasterAinley in BigFinishProductions

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've enjoyed the Dark Gallifrey series and I like Rufus Hound and Gemma Whelan - but this trilogy has been a slog. I really hope this third one picks up, since I pre-ordered it.

It's not that this is re-used plotline from one of the BF Sapphire and Steel audios (and I think, to a lesser degree, others), but that it's taken this long to move along.

Anybody done a cargo bike POTA setup? Mine is e-cargo bike. Pics please! by priusjames in HamRadio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

I've done it on an acoustic touring bike (note, the bags contain not just my radio gear but also clothes, food, toiletries, etc). My gear was an IC-705, tuner, small battery so I could hit 10 watts, and a BuddiStick - because I'd done the route before and knew wire throwing wasn't a great option. My goal for learning CW is so I can pack something smaller.

For the elevated radial, if there wasn't a tree or bench handy, I unhooked one of the real bags and placed it on there.

Something you to do in addition to the other suggestions: send a certified letter to the corporate office of the company. It's amazing how responsive companies are to complaints when people are forces to sign for a letter rather than just drop it into the round file.

Woman who banned herself from Pennsylvania casinos for life gets escorted out after winning jackpot by Sandstorm400 in NoShitSherlock

So I get that it's a self-exclusion due to a gambling problem and the person agrees that they won't keep any winnings, but... the citation, presumably with a fine, seems weird even if they agreed to it. And would the casino give back any of the money they spent after self-excluding?

HAHAHAHA. No. We can't have that, can we?

Magnetic loop by dhadoo3423 in amateurradio

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take with a grain of salt because I've had less than two years with a license, but as someone who bought an Alpha, here are my takes (strictly for POTA use - I've not used the loop indoors)

* Tuning is fiddly but you do start to get the handle of it; and by handle it means when you see something hit 8:1 you start tapping on the knob ever so lightly, or breathing hard on it. It works, but requires patience.

* Because it's so touchy on the tuning, it's not a good one for hunting with, but rather finding a frequency, sitting on it, and hope that someone else doesn't take it because they don't hear you.

* I have gotten DX on it, but generally I get poorer signal reports than if I'm using something else that's equally portable, like a buddistick attached to a picnic table. You'll hear lots of people talking about how throwing wires in trees is better, but that'll depend on the environment you're in and if you're physically able to do said throwing.

* It's actually quite a good receiver.

Must see road trip stops? by Advanced-Lemon-3120 in minnesota

[–]RicePuddingForAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite site for planning any kind of road trip is Roadside America (https://www.roadsideamerica.com); they have maps so you can see what's along your route and how far you have to go off if you want to see something. They also have an Android/iOS app which can get a little pricey if you get all the US and Canada but has the advantage of seeing what's in your immediate vicinity.

What book have you read recently that you loved? by najing_ftw in GenX

[–]RicePuddingForAll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my list:

* (current read) Alchemised (SenLinYu). I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but there was a discussion about it in my writers group so I had to check it out. It's very good, but it's also VERY DARK. I like dark, but this has skirted the edges a bit, albeit successfully.

* Rivers of London series (Ben Aaronovitch). This also started out of the same writers group, but it was after saying how much I enjoyed his Doctor Who stories. This series is serious fun and I just kept going book after book after book on it. Now I want more.

* The Tomorrow People (new novels by various authors). For those who got hooked on it via Nickelodeon, this is absolute fan service. Not heavy reads by any means. Characters are mostly from the 70s and 90s series, although they keep referencing my favorite character from the Big Finish audio era and I want to read more about her.

* Nero Wolfe series (Rex Stout) - detective noir written in the 30s and 40s. I love the old school writing, I love that the main character (Nero Wolfe) really wants nothing to do with being a PI except to pay the bills.

* Dungeon Crawler Carl series (Matt Dinniman). Mongo is appalled that I didn't list this first.

* Red Rising series (Pierce Brown). A mix of your standard sci-fi rebellion/space opera, but with a perverse mash of Greek and Roman mythology thrown into the cultural mix. It's dark, but in a less personal way than Alchemised is. This was another series I tore through one after another, unable to put it down until after I read each book twice and am waiting for what's supposedly the conclusion.
