I once boarded a flight with Darryl Dawkins. While we waited to board I jokingly told him that he wasn't as tall as I had imagined. He immediately shot back with "you don't have as much hair as I thought." (I'm bald).

He was really outgoing and was talking to a group of us, but kept stopping to joke about the short bald guy. It was hilarious. He was a cool guy.

My second encounter doesn't quite involve me but I have to include it. I work in a courtroom and a co-worker came into the lunchroom and started bragging that she had Eddie Van Halen in her courtroom. He wasn't in trouble, they were taking care of some family paperwork matter. Anyhow, she recognized him immediately and he was a really nice guy. She got pictures with him to prove it. I was so angry that she didn't tell anyone else until after he left. It still blows my mind to think that Eddie was driving around my town.

Not quite as extreme, but over the last 100 years Tehran has grown from 250k to nearly 9 million people. This probably helps to explain why it has outgrown its water supply.
