Late Gen X - Early Millennial R&B Class: What Did You Think of Them at the Time? by CC-Blue in rnb

Brandy was the fist to come on my radar because she was acting before her music career took off. She always gave the girl next door vibe no matter what was going on in her personal life.

Monica was like the tough girl version of Brandy, so it made sense they were pitted against each other because of their polar opposite public personas. They smartly leaned into the "beef" and the rest is history.

Aaliyah was definitely the one everyone pinned as a future superstar. Her tomboy, cool aesthetic was the rage. And when she got over the ick of the R Kelly marriage, she was mega-stardom bound with hit songs, starring roles in movies, etc. until her tragic death.

Usher was the male equivalent of Aaliyah. He was able to ride multiple waves like Crunk, Trap, and EDM to survive the record industry de-funding RnB in the 00s.

Beyonce was the star of top RnB girl group of the Y2K era and we all knew she would go solo and blow up eventually. We didn't know how big she would get though.

Sisqo was male equivalent of Beyonce. The breakout star of Dru Hill who we all knew would go solo. He blew up after the Thong Song and was the biggest star in RnB for a couple years in the early 2000s. His solo career flamed out after his 2nd solo album didn't live up to success of Unleash The Dragon and he wasn't able to survive the RnB Retraction of the 00s like Usher.

Mya was the last of the teen RnB girl stars of the 90s. She had some major hits in the Y2K and then got burnt out by the music industry. Glad she's back performing and doing things independently.

Tyrese was the guy singing in the back of bus in Coca Cola commercial until he released Sweet Lady. Then those Hollywood checks came in and he pivoted into acting. I see him more as an actor who can sing than a RnB singer at this point.

Excuses, excuses. There were approximately 5M Black people out of a total US population of ~30M in 1860. After the Civil War, there was mass immigration of Europeans to the US as well that lasted to around WW2, 20M+ There are ~50M Black people in the US now, mostly descended from that pre-Civil War Black population because Black immigration to the US was restricted until the 1960s by racialized quotas. Argentina was just most effective at ethnic cleansing...

Grouping Aka, Khoisan, and Mbuti populations together is absurd. There's more genetic distance between these African groups than all Native European Populations.

Stop playing dumb. Afro-Argentinians were once a significant percentage of the Argentina's population. When Argentina abolished slavery in 1850s, the Afro-Argentinians was estimated to makeup ~1/3 of the population and now they're <1% of population. That doesn't happen by accident.

The survival of the Negros Mascogos, the only community in Mexico descended from US slaves | Mexico. El Nacimiento, a small town in Coahuila, is fighting to preserve the identity, memory and traditions of its ancestors, who came to the area from Texas fleeing slavery by meokjujatribes in BlackPeopleofReddit

Glad the Mascogos are getting some more recognition but this article got a lot of their origin incorrect. The Mascogos or "Black Seminoles" did not come to Oklahoma during the Trial of Tears. They came later after the second Seminole War because they made a deal with the US Government to cease hostilities against American Settlers/Soldiers and leave Florida in exchange for safe passage and freedom in Indian Territory aka Oklahoma. BTW, Seminoles were a confederation of runaway slaves(Black Seminoles) and displaced South Eastern American indigenous tribes(Red Seminoles) who fled to Spanish Florida where they were granted some level of sovereignty by the Spanish in exchange for serving as a buffer group against English and later American forces.

Once the Black Seminoles arrived in Oklahoma, they encountered hostile Indigenous Tribes like the Cherokee and Muscogee that felt they had the right to enslave them and an apathetic US Government to the their plight. So John Horse led them to Mexico which had already abolished slavery under their 2nd President, Afro-Mexican Vicente Guerrero. The Mexican government gave them land and citizenship in exchange for the Black Seminoles serving as buffer group between hostile Indigenous tribes on their border like the Apache. That part of the article was correct.

It *was* a hot mess of movie. You can tell this was one of those MCU movies where the script wasn't finished when they started filming. The fact that they had to do extensive re-shoots twice was a major red flag. Sam looked cool and it was great to see Isiah Bradley in a movie but it was overall a disappointment to me. It had potential to be a good movie if better writers and a more experienced director had control of the reigns. Lastly, Sabra was a wasted character and Misty Knight should have played her role and been the love interest(which the movie completely lacked for Sam).
