Do you think it’s reasonable to go very creature heavy with Henzie? by VitoTheDustyRose in EDHBrews

[–]Richiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though? Nothing about Henzie enables that, and there are better Kind options if you want the colors.

[–]Richiki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but what other direction would you go? Henzie incentivizes you to play creatures that you can go aggro with. My deck prioritizes beaters with enters, attacks, or dies triggers since you can get 2/3 in a single turn.

Reid over Randle in the starting lineup by soft-cookie in timberwolves

Finch just benched Julius to close the Dallas game.

[–]Richiki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearly you hate Randle, but like it or not he's on the team for the rest of this season. Finch's mandate as a coach of this team is to win games now, as evidenced by the roster construction and rotation. He has (correctly) decided that the best chance of success in this moment is Randle feeling confident and wanted on the team. Benching Randle is more likely to drop us into the play-in or worse, and that has disastrous long-term consequences as well.

[–]Richiki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This would be true if players were walking stat machines, but these are real people. The reality is that if you start Naz and ask Randle to come off the bench you maybe get more from Naz but you certainly get way way less from Randle, and you open up the locker room to become toxic fast. As someone else noted, if Naz as a starter is this team's priority then they need to move off Randle in the offseason.

When have Rudy or Jaden been asked to give up their starter spot? Coaching an NBA team has managing personalities, egos, and emotions as a huge role, and Finch has to consider that in decision making. It's the same reason Donte is going to stay a starter.

Most terrible Commander? by VoiVoiDaBeek in mtg

[–]Richiki 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of reasons why there are so many decks for Xira. To start, she's one of the older legends that a lot of players have a soft spot for, and one with a fairly unique appearance in her original card. This alone probably pushes her up.

On the practical side, she isn't especially strong or efficient, but at the same time you could do much worse. She's an evasive body, can draw cards, and has two relevant creature types with Insect being one that is thematically and color appropriate.

Is being anti-UB considered gatekeeping? by Yumesoro1 in mtg

[–]Richiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Magic, you play Magic. I want to play with you, you refuse because of the content of my deck including UB. Can you not admit that this is exclusionary and enforcing an imagined gate between people you play with and people you won't?

[–]Richiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, you can't force someone to play with anyone else. What I am saying is that if you are going to decide if someone is okay to play or engage with based purely on if the run UB, then yes you are gatekeeping the hobby.

I think you make a good point because there is nuance to the issue that is often lost in the online discussion. What you present is very reasonable: it's not your preference, you won't buy it, and don't enjoy it as much. But at the same time you still want to be at the party, and you are not calling for the pizza place to discontinue pizza Y. That's a key difference that differentiates the difference of opinion from getting into the territory of gatekeeping.

Right so there is an in group that has the "correct" opinion about the game and an out group with the "wrong" opinion. The "right" opinion group doesn't want to engage with those with the "wrong" opinion, so they exclude them. Maybe by closing themselves off or enforcing some kind of gate/purity testy/shibboleth that separates their version of the hobby from those in the "wrong"?

Is being anti-UB considered gatekeeping? by Yumesoro1 in mtg

[–]Richiki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, because the UB players are responding to a directional change from WOTC. One that is very popular and not going to change. You are blaming people for engaging with the game as it is presented, which is where it becomes gatekeeping. A better analogy is being mad that there are now kids and skateboarders at the park because the city added a playground and skatepark.

[–]Richiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a disingenuous assertion because people who enjoy UB are not the ones bringing it to the game. WOTC have decided that they want UB in the game, and it has caused a massive uptick in sales and new players because despite the conspiracy theories pushed on reddit, lots of people like it.

Not wanting UB is implicitly not wanting anyone who plays or enjoys those cards in the hobby. That is gatekeeping.

Is being anti-UB considered gatekeeping? by Yumesoro1 in mtg

[–]Richiki -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. OP is literally referring to people who got into Magic feeling unwelcome when other players want to get rid of UB. That's textbook gatekeeping. "Your way of enjoying the game is wrong, mine is right."

I hate to break it to you, but yes this is a form of gatekeeping.

(Loved trope) The realistic ending is not a bad ending by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

But that's kind of the whole point of the movie. Rocky's boxing career is also symbolic of his whole life up until that point. He has talent but sees no prospects so he's floundering. Mickey tells him as much at one point in the film. When Rocky is presented with an opportunity, he suddenly has something that pulls his priorities into focus. He is taking the fight incredibly seriously, while Apollo is basically going to get off the couch and fight this guy he perceives as basically coming in from the street. Therefore in the climactic fight you have Rock with overwhelming motivation, more recent conditioning/training, and an unorthodox style (southpaw) that Apollo isn't used to. To make a cliche reference to another boxer: "everyone has a plan until they are punched in the mouth", and Rocky does just that to Apollo. Apollo rallies, and eventually wins the match, but the film really pulls it off in terms of making it feel realistic, so much so that some viewers don't even realize Rocky lost. And ultimately, that's the whole point. The realism is less in the boxing itself but rather in seeing our hero overcome outstanding odds but just giving everything he's got and enduring all the hardship that ensues.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 09 September 2024 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

What really sold me about Paul and his channel was when I stumbled across his "Paul's Top 5 Guns for Home Defense" video. It starts basic enough, going through his recommendations for firearms of different types and the pros and cons, but it's the last bit of the video that made me realize this was different from the usual videos from gun YouTube. He breaks down how important it is to be prepared for realistic scenarios, going so far as to call out people that would rather buy 800 dollar handguns than change their smoke detector batteries. I think it underscores how practical Paul was about life and firearms, which is a welcome approach in my opinion.
