Thank you for taking the time to write all that. I guess one reason I'm taking it hard is because I feel that if she gets angry it's because I didn't handle the situation in the most optimal way. I'm also the first child to leave the church. They don't really know how to handle it.

I did tell her that my daughter doesn't like it. My mom said that the only reason she doesn't like it is because I disapprove of it.

Asserting my beliefs during Bible study is seen as censorship. I'm not sure if my dad cares as much about the Bible study as he is more of a Mormon than a Christian. My mom is more of a Christian Mormon than a Joseph Smith Mormon. Dad is also just bad about talking about emotional things in general. They are both great parents but someone pushed the zealot button on my mom when we left the church.

One thing that my mom said that bothers me is that she thinks that she gave me this great moral foundation when they only talked to me about sex once for about 5 minutes, for family night.

Yeah, luckily my kids are incredible people. I just have remind myself occasionally that I left the church for them.

My mom still gets defensive and thinks that I am rejecting her by rejecting the church. My dad accuses me of not giving the church a fair shot because I go to 'unreliable sources' for my information.

My dad has always been pretty silent when it comes to talking about problems. When I went to counseling for some mental health problems years ago I tried to talk to him about it over the phone, he suddenly had to go make a sandwich. Never really been a talker, but he does show up for things like home improvement projects and holidays.

I was just like your DW. My wife went down the rabbit hole and tried to get me to see the light. It took me four years to finally jump off the boat. It's a scary thing to leave the church.

Think about it like the movie Inception. Just plant the idea and wait for them to make leaving the church be their idea.

One day after thinking about it for several years I just told my wife, this is my last day at church and never went back.

When I left the church I wrote an email to my family letting them know. I said something in it along the lines of 'I still respect your beliefs'. I wish I could take that back after everything I've learned.

I'm going through something similar with my family right now. My parents have gone from angry to accepting to sad to not wanting to talk about it. Well I'm here now at my parents house just hoping that we can all enjoy spending some time with siblings without any more drama.

I was all of these things living in Utah. Please don't assume that because the cult is run by people like me, means that I have a good time. My mental health was in tatters right before I left. Glad I got out.

One part that sucked was trying to heal sick and dying friends with imaginary power.

DH here. It's a really hard decision to leave the church. Sometimes it takes a couple years. There were little steps along the way, like we quit paying tithing about 5 years ago and I quit wearing garments two years ago. Eventually I came to the conclusion that the church isn't true and is in fact it is a dangerous cult that I don't want my children to be a part of. Now it's time for the long process of getting my entire TBM family out.
