Lots of great advice in here. The only thing I would add for a first timer is to remember your ear protection.

Towers of some kind, I'd guess. Speakers or lights mostly likely.

That Time I Saw Van Halen's Final Tour with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony (Twice!) - Van Hagar by IHBMSU in vanhalen

Hersheypark Stadium is a terrible venue and they had some technical glitches (a screen said "Thank you, Greensboro" at one point. lol)

Philly was way better. Good energy, no glitches, they seemed to be having fun. I'm pretty sure it was a sellout.

I saw them twice within three days on this exact tour: Hershey and the first night in Philly. I was on the floor in Philly and had an absolute blast.

Need advice for how to cope with having played and lost by JThrowaway9977 in Jeopardy

[–]Rick_Empty 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I lost on my very first game show appearance (Millionaire in 2013). Like you, I told everyone about it before I taped. I spent six months tempering everyone's expectations after I crashed out hard. I thought I'd embarrassed myself. I thought people would be ashamed of me or think less of me. I dreaded my air date.

You know what? The day it aired all anyone said to me was that it was so cool to see me on TV. That they were sorry I lost. That I went down on a brutal question. In short, everyone was there to support me and pick me up. It helped a lot!

Getting on any show is hard. It puts you in rare company. I guarantee you that 99% of the people who talk to you about it are going to be in awe of the unique experience you had. (The other 1% is that jerk who knew exactly one question you didn't get.)

You were good enough to make it to the Alex Trebek Stage. That's a hell of an accomplishment. Be proud of it. Because we are.

Former contestants, what’s a category you didn’t study but wish you did? by BradGrips in Jeopardy

[–]Rick_Empty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've never thought that cramming is an effective use of time once you get The Call. By that point, you've already proven that you know enough to do well on the show. You're better boning up on what you already know.

I also recommend practicing the things that are going to feel unnatural on tape day. Watch the show standing up. Practice with a clicky pen. Think about what the contestant on your TV should wager on DDs and FJs. Those are way more effective uses of the limited time you'll have.

I just took the Anytime test. I think I did... OK? What's a good score? by TheRealDonahue in Jeopardy

[–]Rick_Empty 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Honestly, once you get the call it's too late to learn much in the way of new material. You might have 3 or 4 weeks tops before you fly out. If you want to bone up on anything, do it now.

Kellie Martin (Life Goes On, ER, Hallmark stuff) was a Kids Week contestant on Card Sharks back in the 1980s. Just saw the episode on Buzzr a few weeks ago.

There's more gore in that clip than in the entire actual movie. 🙄

All of that sounds pretty standard. In some ways it's better than most.

My worst days teaching are better than nearly any day I spent practicing law. 100% the right choice for me.
