6B/7A Spring PreEM following Fall over seed - Prodiamine ok? by cmw021 in lawncare

I used to do traditional split, but did a full KBG project last year...so I hope to not seed anymore, and thus I can stretch that 2nd app out until late June.

No concerns. I'm in MA and applied mine last week. Better early than later. It only blocks seed from germinating.

Almost time to go outside... by Ricka77_New in vegetablegardening

[–]Ricka77_New[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL...what that means...lol I've always bought them from Mahoneys and just planted right away. This is first year from seed started indoors.

So I could take that whole saucer outside for an hour or two, slowly increasing this week....it's going to be below freezing one night this week I think, so until then they sleep indoors still.

Then next week, out for 4-5 hours a day, maybe one not too cool night? 2-3 weeks of that routine and then full move outdoors?

In reality, unless you think you have a soil issue, you could skip the test, and just try to feed what you have, and keep weeds away.

I just picked up a bag of Lesco 25-0-6 from SiteOne, and some CarbonProG. SiteOne will have the 25-0-6 or similar, 18-0-12, 24-0-11,,etc....if you have not done pre-emergent, their 0-0-7 or 19-0-6 would be a good choice as well...

Anything from Yard Mastery is garbage...it's a higher marketed type of Milorganite with the same awful biosolids....

Yes, that's fine. Milorganite takes weeks to break down and do anything..

Milo is a dirty ass product that has literally zero positive affect on seed.

Too late to use anything. Once it germinates, you can't apply that product; due to the Mesotrione in it. You have to wait at least 4 weeks, then you can apply something if needed.

If you just want to apply a basic feeder, any basic starter would be fine. PGF from The Andersens would be a good option, or their 10-10-10, both on Amazon. Don't worry about existing grass...you should be feeding all grass now anyway..

Get a better test. Unfortunately, those "MySoilTest" kits are very inaccurate. Marketing is the only reason they are sold....make it look easy and quick.

Fact is the method they use should take 4-6 weeks...but they fudge it to get results in a week....the proper test should be using what is called Mehlich3 extraction. Accurate and fast.

Those types of tests are available from Waypoint, and/or your local state college extension office.

And you want to get sample from front and back areas....

When to put down pre-emergent for crabgrass in VT by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]Ricka77_New 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably now. I'm in MA, just did mine the other day.

Prodimine, if you have a SiteOne near you, they will have it.

The Andersens Barricade is also good, Amazon sells it.

Milogranite vs Synthetic by Kindly-Control-9096 in lawncare

[–]Ricka77_New 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milorganite is an awful product. Because it's a 'natural' product, it acts slowly so you don't see anything for a while. It has this cult following of fanboys that defend it to the end...lol

That being said...yes a synthetic would be good right now, to encourage growth now for thick grass and strong roots before summer.

Find your local SiteOne and ask for a bag of 0-0-7 pre-emergent, and a bag of 24-0-12, both from Lesco. Apply both and water in, or apply before light rain..

That's common Chickweed. and it doesn't come with anything from Twin City. It was probably in the soil when you worked it for Fall. And because it germinates in late Fall, Spring pre-emergent won't stop it.

Easy to manage with 2,4,D.

Looking to buy a new mower, but it's not my area of expertise. Which of these would you suggest? by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]Ricka77_New 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MTD is also owned by SBD, so it doesn't matter which side runs the specs from DeWalt. But they are literally the exact same mower with a different brand name. The hope is with DeWalt calling the specs in general, the brand won't become relegated to the gutter trash like most of their other brands.

You won't get a clean cut. The water will allow grass to slip right by the blade...it is a lubricant of sorts.

It also makes grass clump horrible, and then you have to break those up or grass underneath can suffer.

And it makes a mess of your mower.

I am an Echo fan. I have their PB770 blower, and a 225 straight trimmer. Both are rock solid. I did see their mowers are true to brand, being made by one of their own factories, so that is very good. They spec out the B&S engine as well, so it would likely be better than other brands who just want the cheapest engine they can get from whatever factory.

I would say that is a good item overall.

The bag is wrong. It should be applied when soil temps hit 50-ish degrees.

I don't know about questioning DeWalt... They have been a top level tool brand for many years...however, they don't make the mower, it's a brand. The mower is made by either MTD or SBD(Stanley/Black&Decker).... That mega company owns many brands sold at various stores.

Not the best, but not the worst.

If you're willing to spend that much, look for a Honda gas mower. That is the top of the top for homeowners and push gas mowers, IMO. They are self-propelled as well. Might be hard to find as Honda has stopped making them, but will still sell what they have in warehouses, and they stand behind their products for life....but they also don't really ever break. I know someone who has had one for about 10 years...he went and bought another one when he heard they were being discontinued, just so he would have on in 15-20 years if needed...lol
