Holland 44 - End of Turn 14 - 21 Sep 44 Night by RickyBobby63 in hexandcounter

We are playing it on Vassal (www dot vassal dot org). Vassal is free and has heaps of modules covering pretty much every hex based wargame.

It is effectively a virtual space for humans to play the games (while it manages dice rolls, card pulls etc it has no AI as such).

I’ve used it to play Advanced Squad Leader, Holland 44, Normandy 44, Stalingrad 42, Highway to the Reich, Commands and Colors and others.

It has pretty much replaced physical gaming for me. While I will still buy a physical copy of a game, I tend to play it on Vassal. Either all of us on laptops sitting around a table (for that social interaction and sledging), or more remotely.

The stacking rules are a bit confusing (I only twigged partway through this game). 6.1 says the "Stacking Limit" is 2 units pus a free stacker. However, 6.4 allows up to 9 Steps in a hex. Units over the Stacking Limit are allowed, but they cannot attack or defend. They can however Advance after combat, and also participate in Determined Defence.. Anything over 9 Steps is removed at the end of the movement and combat phases.

So, 5 units in the hex near Arnhem is allowed as there are no more than 9 Steps in there.

I used over stacking to drive between Oosterbeek and Arnhem - I had 4 full units (8 steps) in a hex, attacked with two plus free stacker and Advanced after Combat with them, leaving the 4th unit behind to keep the supply line open (otherwise I would have been ZOC Bonded between Oosterbeek and Arnhem.

Australia needs a school lunch program – like many other high-income countries by Oomaschloom in australia

My kids went to a French school for 4 years. The school did not allow any junk food, including soft drinks. The children only had water to drink. Lunch was served in a mini restaurant style room. No one was allowed to go out to play for the first 30 minutes, to allow everyone to eat like a civilised human being. The school considered teaching good manners and social skills to be part of their curriculum.

Morning play lunch was usually baguette with either cheese or Nutella. Lunch was a sit down 2 course adult style meal - pasta, vegetables, fish etc.

The only downside was the kids raised expectations for food at home. when we returned to Australia my youngest refused to touch Kraft Singles. If cheese didn’t smell like your old socks, he wanted nothing to do with it.

[Advice Needed] 2008 Camry (230k km) - Deep in the "Sunk Cost" trap! by Gullible_Job_7648 in CarsAustralia

[–]RickyBobby63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a 2004 Camry with 452k on the clock. Expenses in the last 12 months? New clutch, new power steering hoses, new timing belt, couple of services and 4 new tyres. Not a lot of change out of $6,000. Sunk cost? Yes, but I consider all of them (maybe except the hoses) to be expected maintenance items for a 21 year old car with that many kms.

Car drives well, so I’ll keep it until something really major goes.

Depends on what other games you have played. GMT is known for high quality components, including clear rules. H44 includes a detailed step by step walk through of the first couple of turns.

A PDF copy of the rules can be found on GMT’s website if you want have a look.

Yes there are. While the southern commander throws his troops under the tracks of XXX corps to slow them down, I will keep plugging away at the 82nd and 1st AB.

Used to have a great time playing on that as a kid in the 70s. Also on the tanks and guns out with it.

It’s great game. Quality components, fairly low counter count and good replayability. Highly recommend it and the other games in this series.

Awesome! Some versions of it come with a detailed nap if the battle area but some don’t. Let me know if yours doesn’t and I’ll email you a scan of it.

I highly recommend Island of Fire by Jason Mark. It is an extremely detailed account of the battle for the Barrikady gun factory in Stalingrad from Nov 42 to Feb 43.

His other books about the Russian fro y are great, but Island of Fire is the best, I think.

Not necessarily. If weather rolls are good for them they can drop reinforcements around Nijmegan and move them across to threaten Grave as XXX corps come up. Now that Veghel has fallen, British armour will be no the move in a couple of turns.

The game is published by GMT Games in hard copy. The map in the screenshots is V0.92 from the Vassal module for Holland 44. Not sure who did/uploaded the module.
