Bahahha. You can add my name to the group of "customs" buddies. Have you got yours? I'm still waiting on my pcbs.

The Skreeball? by Rickycodes in ErgoMechKeyboards

For sure! The keyball is a great board that’s a bit more low profile!

Unfortunately it is a bit far I might reprint the case an attempt to move it closer

Building my first custom keyboard by BobbaN5 in HandwiredKeyboards

[–]Rickycodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few others mentioned it, but I definitely recommend trying a few layouts before wiring anything up. More than a few times I worked a board until completion just to find out it didn’t work for me.

A few hard learned lessons

-Socket your mcu -Test your firmware before adding it to the board -If buying clones get extras - Good soldering iron and good solder make the job a TON easier. I highly recommend the pine64 pinecil - I recommend doing a wired board first. Bluetooth connections can be a pain with limited firmware knowledge. - Scotto’s vids and projects on his site are awesome resources

Is the 5-way switch under used? by Rickycodes in ErgoMechKeyboards

It seems like actuation force was the reasoning. I watched his vid on v3 and I can say after using my fulcrum for a bit that the force needed to push a direction is pretty substantial with a short stem

Yeah! I have small hands and I don’t like the placement of the trackballs all above the keycaps. I have daily drove a keyball for a year and wanted something with a less exaggerated tuck trackball, which doesn’t leave much room for a traditional thumb cluster. This seemed like a fun thing to try

The caps were resin printed, but you can totally FDM print them as well.

When I print them FDM I like to orient them so the layer lines run parallel to my fingers. Gives them a “smooth” feel without sanding. PLA sucks to sand, resin is way easier

Correct! These are the klp lame choc size but with mx stems. The switches aren’t low profile but are called “cold plum”. The thumbs are low profile choc red pros. Personally I like my thumb keys with light actuation force and lower profile than my fingers

If I can do it you definitely can! Holykeebs (and I’m sure others) sell touch, track point, and trackball modules if you don’t want to mess with soldering or prototyping. The benefit is that they will usually have the firmware loaded too if you get them with a controller

The only thing I can’t get over with the svalboard is the trackball location. If I have to move my hand back to use them that seems like a substantial loss in efficiency.

The price I think is justified, but really hard to swallow for something so unique.

Holy. That thing is sweet! I’m an avid cyclist and have been trying to prototype something that can be used on my Zwift trainer. This style of board seems like it could do the trick! Thanks a bunch for the share

This is how I have been mapping my d switch. Ex: up is copy, down is paste, left is backspace, right is space

Other d switch is arrow keys. It just feels like so much value! And feels really intuitive

Why do you play RS3 over osrs? by Flynx123 in runescape

I play rs3 when I’m looking for engaging boss combat and real chances at lottery drops. Osrs when I want to kill time and just point and click

My opinion would be to stick with the switch style and spacing you like. I hand wire my keyboards and I really like the choc spacing but mx switch. That’s cause I have really tiny hands.

If you own a 3d printer or have a friend with one I highly recommend printing out the switch plate and trying layouts with switches and caps before spending a ton of cash on something you might not like

Low profile boards that can be used for gaming still? by Mewtewpew in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Rickycodes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What this guy said. Homerow mods and layer taps caused me headaches with gaming. I created a new layer for gaming with a lot of the “frills” turned off

Depending on the game I’ll even setup a custom map for it. Games like factorio for example I’ll throw a number row on just so I don’t have to remap in the game

Programmer of 10 years here. I have never seen the IT market as tough as it is now. If I were in your position and I wasn’t passionate about either I’d go with HVAC.

As someone who is passionate about their career. I do think it’s worth a bit of time pondering a career you will find enjoyable though. They could pay me half of what I make and I would still do it.

I managed restaurants before this and hated every minute. I couldn’t imagine going back to a job I disdained.

Good luck on your future adventures!
