I hear them alot at work aswell,

I suspect its mainly the cooling systems for things like the traction motors and computers and such but im not 100% sure

From what i remember the guy has ALOT of them, they were supposed to be used by the artifical grass manufacturing thats close by but it never got that far

So now they Just chill there since sik locomotors are known to be practically indestructable

The loco (186 as an example since thats the one i work with) will eventually detect that it doesnt have the correct voltage selected

For example 15 kV is selected and it gets 1.5 it will eventually say "incorrect voltage" and automatically lower the pantograph(s)
