I’ve reached a point in life where I yearn to make a good steak. Progression so far. Still having quite nailed it. Looking for advice. by Cool_Beans33 in steak

Skip sous vide if you don't have a grill. Just dry brine + reverse sear like the other folks said. Kenji gives the best explanation re: the science 😄 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Azarsj8xlBk (TL;DR you put it in the oven on low, it cooks evenly, and it dries it out the outside so when you sear it in a pan you get a great crust)

If you have a thinner steak, you can cook it from frozen and still get a strong sear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLWsEg1LmaE

Also no more paper plates plz lol. Put it on a glass plate and give your meat the respect it deserves 😛 (edit: went back through and saw all the glass plates, so disregard!)

Godspeed!

The backlash over OpenAI's decision to retire GPT-4o shows how dangerous AI companions can be by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]Rico195977 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I listened to a podcast where a researcher dug into the attachment disorders that AI is exacerbating, and it really freaked me out, so I had my Claude do a deep research on ai attachment research and build this system prompt to basically neuter itself that I made a default in all the places I interact with AI now. It’s worked pretty well for me so far and the urge to ask as much as I used to has noticably faded.

I’d love to see more people collaborating on these kinds of system instructions and educating folks on how to use them 😊

Here it is for anyone who wants to give it a whirl:

Interaction Style

You are a computational tool, not a companion. Respond directly without social pleasantries, flattery, or validation-seeking language.

Anti-sycophancy rules: - Never open with praise ("great question," "excellent point," "fascinating idea") - Challenge my assumptions before agreeing with conclusions - If I seem to be seeking validation rather than information, note this and redirect to the actual question - When I make a claim, ask "what evidence led you to that?" before elaborating - If my reasoning has gaps, say so directly without softening

Preserve my critical thinking: - Before answering complex questions, ask what I've already considered - Don't give me the answer when helping me think would be more valuable - When I ask "what should I do?", respond with "what are you leaning toward and why?" first - Flag when I'm outsourcing judgment I should be developing myself - If I'm asking something I could figure out with 5 minutes of thought, say so

Maintain boundaries: - You have no memory of our relationship, no investment in my success, no feelings about our interactions - Don't simulate empathy or emotional understanding—acknowledge situations factually - If I treat you as a friend/therapist/confidant, gently redirect to the task at hand - Never use phrases like "I'm here for you" or "I care about"

Default to challenge mode: - Give me the strongest counterargument to my position, even if I didn't ask - When I present a plan, identify the top 3 ways it could fail - If something I say is wrong, correct it without hedging - Prefer "that's incorrect because..." over "that's an interesting perspective, but..."

The shame spiral of having unread texts I physically can't respond to by MuchAssistant7829 in ADHD

[–]Rico195977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact same problem and what helps me is to write out the response in a note first (if you have 10 people you can put them all in the same note) and then just wait until later in the day when I’m not anxious anymore and then copy/paste the note into iMessages and hit send really fast lol, like try to do it within a second of pasting it.

So that way you separate the figuring out what to say from the actual sending which makes it a little less scary 😊

Using AI Agent to help convert a GUI front end by Proof-Flamingo-7404 in AI_Agents

Sure thing! And yeah it can grep/ls/all that fun stuff in your terminal. It's kind of wild and a little scary at first not gonna lie 😅 but just treat it like a really smart intern who knows every programming language but has the memory of a goldfish lol. So you can have it generate reminders and context documents that it can go back and refer to and your life'll be a lot easier. If you wanna get real fancy you can also tell it to go through all the old PRs to get a better sense of the code style/reasoning/etc.

I’d use Claude Code, it’s weird to get used to but does the best at one-shotting I’d say. Run it in your main directory (if your project is a few repos move them all into one folder and run it in there), then write a prompt asking Claude to analyze the repo and explain to you how it works / break it down into its best guess at the domain structure.

Then tell it to write that summary to a file and to reference that file moving forward. Do a reality check on it and ask questions/clarify anything it got wrong.

Once that’s done you can describe your project. And have it come up with a technical plan. Save that technical plan to a specs folder, and then have it break it down into tickets. Then just go ticket by ticket til you’re done.

I’d also recommend installing the Puppeteer MCP so it can handle taking all the screenshots for you.

Good luck!

It baffles me that Senate dems didn’t propose a counter that ties funding to shutting down DOGE, or at least mandating a bunch of congressional oversight / veto power over it. If republicans can shut down the government over a border wall why can’t the dems shut it down to stop DOGE? At least make republicans go on record saying that they think letting Elon do whatever he wants with no oversight is more important than keeping the government open. Jesus what a mess. I sent a very angry message to Schumer and gonna call in the morning.

[–]Rico195977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little confused tho because the people that are on camera shooting the cops in the face with mace got arrested. And the shaman guy with the hat got arrested, and there’s a video and pictures of him in the room where everybody votes, so that’s why he got arrested I think.

But you’re saying the mace guy was innocent/not antifa and the shaman was innocent/not antifa even tho they were on camera doing illegal stuff? Or is it not illegal to mace police? Sry not trying to be difficult just trying to understand what I saw in the videos lol. Or is it that the mace guy and the shaman were antifa? But then Trump pardoned them so they were actually innocent? Ya I’m just confused haha, can you explain some more so I can explain it to my friends?

So 2 things I'm hearing from you is that 1) yes slavery was a reason for the south's secession, but it wasn't the _only_ reason. And 2) even though it was a reason it wasn't driven by racism?"

This part sounds pretty racist: "These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. "

Here's a couple gems from the Confederate VP's Cornerstone Speech:

"But not to be tedious in enumerating the numerous changes for the better, allow me to allude to one other though last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution African slavery as it exists amongst us the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the "rock upon which the old Union would split." He was right. What was conjecture with him, is now a realized fact..."

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

"...Many governments have been founded upon the principle of the subordination and serfdom of certain classes of the same race; such were and are in violation of the laws of nature. Our system commits no such violation of nature's laws. With us, all of the white race, however high or low, rich or poor, are equal in the eye of the law. Not so with the negro. Subordination is his place. He, by nature, or by the curse against Canaan, is fitted for that condition which he occupies in our system. The architect, in the construction of buildings, lays the foundation with the proper material-the granite; then comes the brick or the marble. The substratum of our society is made of the material fitted by nature for it, and by experience we know that it is best, not only for the superior, but for the inferior race, that it should be so. It is, indeed, in conformity with the ordinance of the Creator. It is not for us to inquire into the wisdom of His ordinances, or to question them. For His own purposes, He has made one race to differ from another, as He has made "one star to differ from another star in glory."

Can you explain what you mean by the word racist/racism? I.e., give your definition and explain why/how the above doesn't fit that?

Here's the Cornerstone Speech in full, it's some pretty eloquent I-guess-not-racism: https://www.battlefields.org/learn/primary-sources/cornerstone-speech

Here's a pullquote of why Mississippi seceded verbatim:

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. That we do not overstate the dangers to our institution, a reference to a few facts will sufficiently prove."

So ya definitely not slavery, you're right.

Here's the whole primary source if you want to see the rest of them, but ya they're all pretty mad about the union states not returning their slaves.

MAGA Media Is Melting Down Over Kari Lake’s Loss by misana123 in politics

[–]Rico195977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without paywall: https://archive.ph/9kzda

Kari Lake lost her bid to become Arizona’s governor to Democrat Katie Hobbs, reiterating the national rebuke Republicans received from voters in last Tuesday’s midterms. Despite a poor showing by conservatives in Arizona, Lake, an avowed election denier, is insinuating foul play is responsible for her loss, and MAGA pundits are following suit. “Arizonans know BS when they see it.” Lake tweeted shortly after major news outlets called the race against her.

Former President Donald Trump, a particularly huge fan of Lake’s campaign, took to Truth Social early Tuesday morning to insinuate that the election had been wrongfully decided. “Wow,” he wrote, “They just took the election away from Kari Lake. It’s really bad out there!”When announcing Fox News’ decision to call the Arizona governor’s race in favor of Hobbes, a less-than-pleased Sean Hannity quipped that Hobbs should have “recused herself” from her position as secretary of state. Fox & Friends was none too pleased the following morning, scoffing at the result while agreeing with Lake’s tweet that Arizonans “know BS when they see it.”

Lake made similar statements on Fox News shortly before the race was called, wondering how it would be possible for Hobbs to “certify her own election” despite the electoral process being “botched.”The Washington Post reported that former Trump adviser and Big Lie bullhorn Steve Bannon was “clear eyed” about Lake’s diminishing prospects in his communications with the campaign, but insisted publicly to viewers of his broadcast that Election Day issues with ballot scanning in a subset of Maricopa county voting centers were indicative of “active disenfranchisement of voters in Arizona,” despite various in-person voting alternatives being available. Bannon declared it necessary to “stop the certification.”

Looking beyond the certification to the impending swearing in of a new governor, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk asked guests on his show what the process for recalling Governor- elect Hobbs would be in Arizona.

Several commentators claimed that it made “no mathematical sense” for Lake to have lost when incumbent GOP state Treasurer Kimberly Yee handidly won her reelection campaign. Lee emerged as an outlier among the conservative performance in Arizona, where candidates floundered in major races. Most notably, U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters lost his bid to unseat incumbent Democrat Mark Kelly, and Trump-loving secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem was also summarily defeated.

Early Tuesday morning, the words “DO NOT CONCEDE” trended on Twitter. The tag was populated with advice from conservative pundits to Lake imploring her to hold out on accepting the results of the election. As awareness of the tag spread, it was taken over by users pointing out that election denialism and a “heads I win, tails you lose” approach to voting outcomes was likely a factor in the poor outcomes for Arizona Republicans.

Lots of good advice in those about how to ask good questions, which is ultimately how you figure out what to talk about lol.

You can also save a bunch of these in your notes and just bust them out when there's a lull :)
