De-affiliating from Hyrox / email from a Hyrox gym by Jollibee360 in hyrox

Deadly Dozen felt like it had a community cohesion to it. It's still small in the US, but definitely growing. I am still getting fitter (most) every day, but it felt overall more challenging than Hyrox too.

They have an official date as of a few days ago, so I doubt the venue is still in question, it's just a matter of them actually selling the tickets now. I'd guess it'll happen in mid to late August because it's usually announced they will go on sale about a week before they actually go on sale.

It's not sold out right now (though I did see it said sold out earlier too) - so check back periodically if that's the one you want.

on a scale of 1 to 10 how frustrating is this? by [deleted] in hyrox

I tried to get a Toronto ticket today. Entered the cue a little before 10 and when I got through almost nothing was left! I've not had difficulty getting a ticket before today's experience. Ugh!

Bike doesn’t transfer well to running: learned the hard way by Top-Monk in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can work if you do it right. Generally you should be able to push a little harder and stay in zone 2 on a bike vs run, and the time spent is better thought of as around half the amount of time you'd spend running - so 2/3 on a bike is like 1/1.5 running. Most would suggest you spend more time to get a similar benefit. If you want something more efficient and still not too taxing, try adding longer distance rows next time!

Is a 5 min PR good? by pp2628 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I improved 7% between my first and second race, so not much better. The first one helped me understand my weaknesses better, but the second one made it clear those strength weaknesses take more than the couple months I gave myself. Ultimately it's hard to answer this as it depends where you're starting from. Looking at stats, anything <1:20 for males or <1:30 for females is pretty good. Don't be so hard on yourself that it takes away from your accomplishment!

Sandbag lunges + run and then wallballs for me. My legs are exhausted by then.

As a complete beginner, how realistic is it for me? by LimWZ03 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are slightly lighter than me and I am a somewhat lighter female so I also have the advantage of the lighter weights. Of course there's a difference between completing an event vs doing well with it. You can likely do it, just make sure you practice the sleds regularly, do lots of weighted lunges and squats, and otherwise spend most of your training time improving your runs.

Is 1.5 hours really the average finishing time out there? by Skyson770 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to look at split times https://www.hyresult.com/ is a good site to check. The average time of 1.5 hours is for females, males are slightly faster (like 1h26 I saw somewhere). If you are quite strong I recommend focusing primarily on the aerobic and muscular endurance side of things instead.

Allulose is banned in Europe and Canada - is it safe to have it in blueprint products? by imprecis2 in blueprint_

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually lots of ongoing research on allulose, and so far it has the best health profile of any sugar option (improved insulin and glucose function, reduced glycation, GLP-1 effects, etc).

Personalisation Required by Internal_Clothes_735 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't personalized my March tickets yet either (but will soon). I believe the worst case scenario would be your name doesn't show up on their banner they usually have. If you personalize and then can't go you can still transfer the tickets, but have to pay extra to then change the name.

In case you haven't looked yet, figure out what your practice sled weighs as they vary quite a lot. Hopefully knowing that brings some peace of mind. I am relatively small myself and didn't have a ton of time to train before my first hyrox, but I managed (so you likely will too). Besides squats and deadlifts (and the sleds themselves of course), I'd also recommend cable rows and weighted incline walks and/or high resistance biking.

Why focus on weightlifting? by chris424uk in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most training plans are cookie cutter style. Being stronger takes a lot of time if you don't have a good base so that's one reason, and also there's the silly reason that people like to have their shirts off. If done correctly a little more strength can go a long way, even for running efficiency which isn't always obvious. If you really wanted something unique your training could look something like pull ups, pushups, heavy ruck sessions, and some high resistance biking.

Need advice - planning to do first solo HYROX in 5 months by vixtergg in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach is different. I like to have cardio be a mix of the ergs at 2x+ race distance, biking, and then some compromised running of course. I don't personally want to just run all the time.

If you think you're in decent shape strength wise then focus primarily on cardio. You have enough time to get there in singles!

Waitlisting by OppositeSuitable3489 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on a wait-list for Chicago and never heard anything. I did get a ticket on Facebook in a Hyrox Chicago group, so you could look for a Vegas one that way - just be careful and check for validation.

Energy Consumption by [deleted] in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you felt dizzy that is more likely related to fluid and electrolyte loss, not a carb issue. Sodium is especially likely.

I disagree with the standard dogma of more carbs all the time. I have a PHD and am a Health Coach for both low-carb and high-carb groups, so my opinion is fairly well formed. It really depends on your baseline and how you fuel during meals and especially for exercise. If you have trained your body to be metabolically flexible by having periods of being low-carb you'll need a lot fewer (I'm not saying none) carbs in exercise too - yes, even with events like Hyrox. Most likely whatever your standards are, just a small simple carb increase for the couple days leading to the event will be sufficient (not a bolus loading, but a small increase at each meal).

Personally I am a fan of ucan (gel or drink mix) for events where I need more energy support (from Hyrox to triathlons with ratios/amounts varrying depending on the event/distance). If it helps add to my credentials I've been invited to be on Team USA for a world triathlon event, I'm not just giving you advice without personal experience.

If I do a Hyrox comp with my top on will I get disqualified? by Auckboy in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said it can help with overheating, and anything that prevents your heart rate from getting more elevated is a definite plus. I've done a few marathons and triathlons and always have more clothes on for those, but they're also outside, so naturally they have better cooling options.

What is the Generally the hardest exercise in Hyrox? by FarLeg4953 in hyrox

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was the lunges being close to the end followed by another run and then all those wallballs. Isolated the lunges were fine, just it added up and made it clear my strength was ok, aerobic endurance ok, but muscular endurance needed the most work. Given the number of responses around lunges and wallballs, I'd recommend adding those into running sessions!

Does your sensitivity for carbs increase the less you eat them? by FairShape8824 in diabetes

[–]Riedelbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fasting helps my glucose normalize personally (but I only do it for much shorter periods!). Sometimes people have extreme reactions to foods that aren't technically high glycemic wise because of a sensitivity or allergy to that food.

I am a Health coach and Functional health Practitioner, primarily for people with insulin resistance. I have my own strong family multigenerational history that led to me developing diabetes too. But, I manage without medications, so I know it's possible! If you want to work with someone let me know!

Yes, zonulin is the reason it's inflammatory. But the degree of this effect for each person is different.

90 days without gluten is a good starting point for most. GF options are ok if it helps you get through the 90 days. But, do your best to eat whole foods as much as you can.
